The episode of Spongebob Squarepants entitled SB-129, aired on New Years Eve, 1999. This is funny in its own right because of the new millennium and Y2K and all that. In the episode, Squidward gets trapped in the Krusty Krab freezer. Once frozen, the French Guy and title card say, “2000 years later”. Now, Spongebob is one of those shows that is very specific about their time lapses. If Squidward was frozen for roughly 2000 years, it would have said so. If it was 2573 years, it would say so. However, it specifically said 2000. After Spongetron melts Squidward from his icy prison, there’s a calendar in the background that says March 6, 4017. 2000 years before 4017 is 2017. Knowing the episode aired in 1999, that tells us that Spongebob takes place 18 years in the future. This tells us that it is currently 2032 in Bikini Bottom.
