This angel is made of knives that were surrendered to police or were once kept as forensic evidence. Some are engraved with the victims’ names, and each blade was cleaned of ‘biological material’ and dulled by artist Alfie Radley, who created the piece for the British Ironwork Centre to help bring awareness to the knife violence issue in the UK. Leon Gast, director of the Oscar-winning documentary When We Were Kings (1996), said of his experience producing the film: “In my career, I spent five days with the Grateful Dead, I travelled with the Hells Angels, and I went to Folsom Prison [for Johnny Cash’s concerts in 1968]. But ‘The Rumble in the Jungle’ topped them all. I built a relationship and a rapport with Muhammad Ali and I could never top that experience.”
“I was only eighteen when my first daughter was born. Her name was Svetlana. She came down with an infection but there were no antibiotics in the hospital. I begged the doctors and nurses to tell me where to buy them. But none of them would tell me because they were afraid to go to jail. I finally found some American medicine on the black market. But weeks had already passed and it was too late. The antibiotics didn’t work and my daughter passed away. Up until that moment, I had considered becoming an artist or a dancer. But I decided then to become a doctor.” (Moscow, Russia)
