One of tbe brilliant things about mlp:fim is that the main cast aren't wayward children or highschool students they're just a bunch of young adults. Like. Twilight is a postgrad forced by her supervisor to go find friends. Apple Jack has responsibility of gaurdianship of her little sister. They're all employed. They pay rent and taxes. Fluttershy has to deal with her deadbeat underachiever older brother who can't seem to move out by himself when she visits her parents. She also has anxiety she hasnt grown out of since high school. Rainbow Dash spends most days getting high and goofing off on her minimum wage job. Pinkie Pie has a culinary apprenticeship and lives with an older couple after she left her small mining town when nobody there was as into psychadelics as her. Rarity balances running her slowly growing etsy fashion bussiness with going on tinder dates with the worst men you've ever seen. They all vote. They have to pick up their own medical perscriptions. These are 26 year old girlies going through first quarter life crisises. So, yea, that fanart of Fluttershy smoking forever weed is highly accurate.

The funny thing about contemporary discourse regarding whether trying to adapt roguelike video games to the tabletop represents the videogamification of tabletop RPGs is that tabletop RPGs randomly generating encounters and dungeon layouts using stacks of big stupid lookup tables is actually older than Rogue (i.e., the game the roguelike genre is named after). Heck, depending on how you define your terms, the hex-crawl – a style of tabletop roleplaying revolving around the logistics of overland travel across a hex-gridded map where the contents of each hex are randomly generated – may well be the earliest form of tabletop RPG to fully distinguish itself from historical wargaming. Like, this style of play is not novel to the medium; it's the literal, historical foundation of the hobby.

Not that this stopped anyone from complaining on usenet that the big list of random lookup tables in the AD&D DMG made the game more like Rogue despite predating it by a few years

By that measure, complaining that people are turning tabletop games into video games is also foundational to the hobby.

You know, I knew that the videogamification discourse bullshit went back at least as far as the initial release of Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition in 2000 (which was widely dismissed by the grognards as "tabletop Diablo" upon its publication), but it's interesting to know that 1E was also catching the same flak back in the 80s. Now I'm wondering what popular video game 2E was unfavourably compared to!

finally got a chance to visit the geek cafe in Anaheim, which is having a Homestuck event right now. annoyed my former-Homestuck friend from the moment we walked in by pointing to every female troll standee and asking “is this Vriska? Is this one Vriska?”

my husband, tiredly following behind me: no that's not Vriska. Vriska is the one with the eyepatch, because her eye has eight pupils in it.

me: That's amazing! Please do not give me any followup information whatsoever, I want to revel in this!

I invoke my 5th amendment right to remain silent

It IS true that being on here gives you a tumblr accent. This morning my mother asked me something and i replied "i don't know i've never heard these words in that order" and she nearly choked laughing. It wasn't even that funny

at my old job i had a coworker who was tired and made a coffee with like 6 or 8 shots of espresso and i just casually went up to them like “are you trying to meet god?” and not only was this absolutely hilarious to them but they brought it up in future conversations they thought it was so funny but to me this was just as casual as saying “woah that’s a lot of coffee”

Being funny on Tumblr and then going to be funny in real life is like traveling to a foreign country and baby the currency exchange rate is biased in your favor
