According to production designer Robin Standefer, what makes this home so endearing and intriguing to viewers is that the home is meant to be a place of refuge: “There is a whole world in this house and garden…These women are outcasts and this place is their sanctuary.”

Truly a world within itself, the Owens house is meant to withstand time and passing fads. We find ourselves drawn to this small world because it’s nothing like we see today– not in 1998, and surely not 20 years later, let alone in the real world. For being only a set on a film, the unattainability of the Practical Magic world is what makes us come back each Halloween to watch it, to keep us dreaming, to keep inspiring us to create our own magic, even if just within our homes. — “Fit For a Few Witches: The Practical Magic Victorian House

The fact is that every gaslighter ever says "you're misremembering things" or "you remember things that never happened" or "you remember things wrong." Now that we saw the ATW short film and know that, yes, the J/T relationship involves a lot of gaslighting, the phrase "I remember it all too well" hits SUPER hard in a place that I didn't even know I could be sucker-punched. I'm in awe. Mad respect for you Taylor. Thanks for showing us what the song was really about 10 years later.

EXCUSE ME!?

What just happened!?

IATSE and their new contracts happened, and this is a VERY GOOD THING. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has, under threat of an industry-wide strike by film and TV crew supported by the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild, and the Screen Writers Guild, finally agreed to negotiate better working conditions, longer turn around times to allow crew to rest between shifts, and better pay for material being put on streaming services.

What this tells us is that Marvel was using backbreaking conditions to get their shit made, and these delays are because they've been forced to actually ensure safe and fair working conditions and adequate compensation for the people working on their projects.

IATSE members have not voted to approve this new contract, so this actually isn’t 100% true. Many members are vocally upset about the new contract because it does not offer enough turn around time (new contract says 10 hours, when we were asking for 12), residual pension, health benefits, and rest + meal breaks.

And I Do have to break it to you that it’s not only marvel/Disney that treats crew like this….it’s everyone :(

I can tell you right now that the new contract is SHIT.

We asked for 10 hour days with 12s a couple times a week if needed. We asked for pay to keep up with inflation which meant 5.4% raises. We asked for guaranteed meal times because productions realized that it was cheaper to pay the penalty than it was to feed and stop production for lunch. We asked for 54 hour weekends. We asked that the “new media” contract that says streaming platforms can pay us less be taken down. We were geared up for strike! We could have had better conditions! And you know what happened? Our leaders folded. They FOLDED. They called this a victory! All they gave us was 10 hours between shifts which means we can still work 14-16 and no one is stopping them!  They gave us a 3% raise over the next year! They only SLIGHTLY raised the penalty for not giving workers breaks. They didn’t take down the new media contract.  We had them on the edge and for some reason our leaders folded. I hope this contract gets voted down. I hope that they have to return to the table with their tail between their legs and actually get us a contract that won’t kill people.

not only do i support lil nas x appropriating characters and symbols from christianity to make horny, campy gay hip-hop videos, i think this sets the bar for lgbt media in the future. fuck that "were just like you!" respectability shit. i need all gay artists to make their work exactly as hostile and disrespectful to the christian right as the christian right has been to gay people for all of its history.

Anonymous asked:

what's so great about the mummy 1999?

are you ready for this?

it is the most wonderfully made, historically inaccurate, giddily fun, perfectly paced, goofy horror movie romance novel bullshit bonanza that has ever blessed the silver screen.

i mean it is just so beautifully full of every genre without being overwhelming.we’ve got: comedy, action, suspense, horror, romance, adventure, ancient aesthetics, and it’s a period piece. all perfectly balanced and blended into one movie.

and the characters are so LIT

we got our main babe, evelyn motherfucking” carnahan, a super-klutz librarian, total history nerd, and certified badass/damsel in distress. she raises the dead on accident, because she cannot resist books, and has the guts to put that motherfucker back where he came from and literally saves the world.evie’s greatest hits:

  • “what is a place like me, doing in a girl like this?!”
  • *after totally destroying the library* “i’ve just made a bit of a mess in the library.”
  • “no harm ever came from reading a book.”
  • evelyn: *upon opening the tomb* “i’ve dreamt about this since i was a little girl.”rick: “you dream about dead guys?”
  • “oops.”

then we’ve got rick “brendan fraser” o’connell, your not-so-typical battle hardened gun slinger with a heart of gold. he seems filthy, rude, and a complete scoundrel at first, but then he turns into a literal puppy, with massive heart eyes, that worships the ground evie walks on.rick’s greatest hits:

  • *screams at mummy*
  • *screams at sand*
  • *screams at things that are illogical to scream at*
  • *screams*

next is our Comedic Relief Character™, jonathan carnahan, who also rises above his trope. he’s there for the laugh sure, but is never useless. he actively helps to move the plot along and isn’t just there. he also is the farthest thing from brainless and annoying.jonathan’s greatest hits:

  • evelyn: “have you no respect for the dead?”jonathan: of course i do, but sometimes i’d rather like to join them.” same.
  • oh and that time he was like “IMHOTEP” and saved his own ass like that was so smooth, y’all know what i’m talking about right??

then there is ardeth BAE. he is the audience rolling his eyes because *sighs* white people. he’s tired of these motherfucking mummies in this motherfucking desert. literally prettier than everyone.(he has a much bigger role in the mummy returns, but is still so fab here)

and of course THE MUMMY. imhotep. actual emo. literally carved some poetry into the back of his sarcophagus when he was buried alive with flesh eating bugs, because he is that Extra™. just wants to bring his girlfriend back to life so he can make out with her without it being treason.

and all the side characters are also gr8.

now i wanna take a moment to talk about the romance. because it is so BEAUTIFUL. like usually in action movies it’s macho man undermines girl and they bone. not here. no time for that shit.

rick and evie have such a great relationship based on mutual respect and affection. they both cater to each other’s strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses. they are the literally definition of: “those two. in a fight, they’re lethal. around each other, they melt”

what else, i could literally talk about this movie all day.

the special effects have held up pretty well.the music score is GORGEOUS.the costumes are amazing.the makeup, especially for anck su namun, OH WOW.the george of the jungle era brendan fraser sign me the fuck up.rachel weisz.

so many good things.

it’s just great.

#i secretly rate every action movie from 0 to the mummy

it’s a beautiful mess of a movie that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and transcends time and posterity as the alpha mummy movie, and to those who disagree i beseech you:

A most accurate assessment. All hail 1999′s The Mummy.

I approve this post

“…There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased..“ - Roger Ebert

All the above pretty much sums it up. :)

This movie is great but that story Arnold Vosloo once told about how Brendan Frasier pranked the entire crew when they were shooting Anck-Su-Namun’s rather memorable entrance where she’s wearing body paint and not much else except the first time they rolled camera BRENDAN came swaggering out in the body paint… that story just lives rent free in my head now.

the news is bad sometimes

Okay but what’s the phone

thats what cain used to kill abel

Okay but for real think of the possibilities.

  • People in remote areas (both recreationally and living) - hiking or dangerous areas if they’re lost, hurt, or scouting ahead
  • Homeless people
  • Disabled people (to alert for help or contact vital services
  • Areas of extreme poverty (see all above)
  • Lost people (either urban or rural) able to call for help
  • Somebody close to death able to record all final thoughts (either injured, terminal, trapped, or unable to have constant medical care)
  • Children always able to call for help
  • Abused people - hiding a phone without worrying about it needing to be recharged

it isn’t bad at all, we’re just so used to phone companies trying to make paper thin phones with no battery life cause it’s good for business
