Welwitschia mirabilis in flower. These plants are among Earth’s longest lived organisms, and they only produce 2 leaves their entire lives! Until recently, it was thought that Welwitschia spent its entire life as a cotyledon-producing, over grown seedling. And if that wasn’t strange enough, this Namibian-desert native produces cones for reproduction—a true “living fossil” among plants!
