Your 20s are your hustle years. You're working your ass off to get ahead. You're getting a lot of responsibilities, but you still don't feel like a real adult yet. This podcast is about that in-between feeling and those in-between years.

Dr. Who and the Daleks Livestream Update!

This Friday, Oct. 23rd, we’ll be going on a road-trip with @typesetjez and @truestoriesaboutme. That evening we’re gonna watch the 1965 Peter Cushing film Dr. Who and the Daleks and you’re all invited!

We’re going to do a livestream for anyone who wants to watch along with us. There will be a drinking game. After the movie, we will record a drunken podcast about the film hopefully with a handful of special guests.

The livestream of the viewing of the film will be available to everyone! The livestream of the podcast recording will only be available to our Patreon patrons. But you can donate at any level to get access! We hope to see you for one or both of the livestreams!

We’ll probably have a more definite time for when all of this will be starting by Wednesday, but I imagine it will start somewhere between 7pm-9pm Central/8-10 Eastern.

And lastly, here’s the drinking game rules (subject to change):

-Take a sip when someone says “Doctor.” Two sips for “Doctor Who.” -Take a sip when someone says “Dalek!” -Take a shot when a Dalek says “Exterminate!” “Stay where you are!” or mentions “The drug(s).” -Take a shot when Ian suffers a slapstick pratfall. -Take 2 shots if Ian declares something alive or dead. -Take a shot when the Doctor says “It’s a trap!” -Take a shot whenever Barbara screams. -Take a shot when the Romans appear. - Whenever the TARDIS materializes/dematerializes, chug during the transition between there and gone. -Whenever a companion, or anyone else, hides behind something that should offer no cover but it works, give one drink to the person to your left and say “Found you. Drink up”. -Take a shot every time you hear a sliding door slam open or shut in the Dalek city.

We’re all going to die and you get to watch.

If you would like to see the faces behind That Adult Feel, now is your chance! Better, yet, you get to see three of my previous guests get really drunk and watch me silently judge them (and the movie, probably).

Everyone who has sent me submissions for the special podcast episode included their bloopers.

This is what trust feels like.

Very, very misplaced trust.

Episode 17: The Time Meddler (Mad Props to Edith)

Joe and Toni are joined by Chris Cherry AKA @truestoriesaboutme to discuss the tricky way sounds work in the Classic Doctor Who serial The Time Meddler.

Be sure to check out Brains the web series Chris works on. He plays Billy Jack in episode 4! Also don’t miss episode 4 of @thatadultfeel which Chris guested on.

Also don’t forget on October 23rd, we’ll be doing a special livestream of the 1965 film Dr. Who and the Daleks for all of our Patreon patrons. Hope you’ll join us!

If you want to hear last week’s great guest Chris talk about more TV, he’s on this week’s episode of the Watch-a-thon of Rassilon! He tackles the biggest question in Doctor Who technology: “I understand why he doesn’t have an iPad...but why doesn’t he have an iPad?”

This week, I’ll be talking to Chris Cherry and Kristi McCurdy about how television gave us unrealistic expectations for adulthood. We’ll talk about shows like Friends, Boy Meets World, Glee, Happy Endings, Parks and Recreation, and more, and we’ll talk about whether or not it’s a writer’s responsibility to represent life realistically and diversely.

Find Chris on tumblr at @truestoriesaboutme and watch him act in a great new webseries about zombies called Brains! here. Find Kristi on tumblr at @kristilynn and read her blog on life as a waitress at @mydayinreview.

Want to be on the podcast? Answer these questions, send me the recording (about 2 minutes long), and I’ll include it in an upcoming episode! Submissions due Friday, Oct 16th.

Want to be on the Podcast?

I’m working on an episode titled “I Knew I Was an Adult When…” and will be breaking away from my usual format by editing together clips from lots of different people instead of interviewing specific people.

If you want to be included, record your answers to the questions below.

  • Who you are & how old you are
  • When did you first realize you were truly an adult? How old were you and what was the moment like?
  • Do you ever realize you're not actually as grown up as you thought?
  • When you were a kid, what did you think adulthood would be like? Were you right?
  • What's the best advice you've ever received?
  • What advice would you give to teens about becoming an adult (if different)?
  • And, of course, tell me (in short) your adulting win for the week

 Things to keep in mind:

  • Record in a quiet location. Avoid large, empty rooms, if possible.
  • Don't type or eat or otherwise make noise while recording.
  • Try to start your answer by repeating or rephrasing the question. "The best advice I ever received was..."
  • Send me the raw audio; don't worry about editing anything.

I may not include your answer for every question, but will use everyone at least once. Email your clip to htgtfu.responsibleone at gmail by Friday, October 16th. If I get too many submissions, I'll close it early.

Schedule Change

Just FYI, at the end of the last episode, I said the next one would be a discussion of the internet as it was, but that episode is going to need a lot of editing if it’s going to get to a workable state. So, instead, I’m going to switch up the schedule and next week I’ll release an episode about how TV gave us unrealistic expectations for adulthood (and life in general), featuring truestoriesaboutme and kristilynn.

It’s basically three nerds talking about TV shows for an hour or so. You’ll love it.

In honor of International #PodcastDay, how about some bookish fun?  Because we all need new suggestions for our To Read lists.

(and no, you can never have too many books on your To Read list…the library said so)

What kind of librarian podcast host would I be if I didn’t share these too?

Happy Podcast Day!

Today we celebrate podcasts, because they’re amazing, fun, and sometime even educational. Here are some that I love that you should try!

  • Jump Leads - Brand-new! British sci-fi audio adventure, sort of in the vein of Douglas Adams.
  • Librarians Assemble! - Reviews of comics and graphic novels, specifically for libraries, but a great listen for all comic readers
  • Nerdette - Not currently updating, but worth going through their archive. Nerd culture with a feminist twist that interviews lots of amazing women in STEM fields.
  • The Podcast Dude - Taught me almost everything I know about podcasts. I’m constantly learning from him.
  • Pop Culture Happy Hour - It’s NPR and it’s all about movies, music, TV, and books. What more could you want?
  • Reply All - Fascinating stories on the internet. I’ve reached the point where I reference an episode at least twice a week.
  • rassilonwatchathon - Joe & Toni watch every episode of classic Doctor Who and review them. Totally worth it for the adorable nerds hosting.

Another review is up! Thank you! If we get three more of these, iTunes will give the podcast an average rating (hopefully a good one). (Also, please ignore that I am 8 months late listening to that Invisibilia episode.)

So this is the nicest thing anyone has written about me (and it looks even better on my phone). Thanks!

If you want to help the podcast, why not write a review? I would really appreciate it!

I feel like I should mention that iTunes gets really picky about explicit languages and will reject reviews that use it. So if you wanted to mention the blog in your review, just call it HTGTFU instead.

You can now easily find ways to support the podcast by visiting the shiny new “support” page, where I will give shout-outs to people who have supported the podcast, a link to my PayPal donation page (for one-time donations), and a link to the podcast’s Patreon page. Speaking of Patreon, I just revamped the reward levels to give you more bang for your buck and to add a new reward for video recordings of the podcasts (after a particularly amazingly experience with eCamm).

So this is the nicest thing anyone has written about me (and it looks even better on my phone). Thanks!

Recording episode 5 this weekend and I’m interested in hearing opinions on this one: which TV shows (or movies?) gave you unrealistic expectations for adulthood or your 20s? How?
