i saw a post on twitter by a european saying americans are fake for their random compliments to strangers and their general cheery demeanor and like no. no no no you don’t understand. if you get a random compliment from an american on the street about your outfit or whatever, that is 100% genuine. we mean it. we aren’t lying we are making a small but fleeting connection with you because our lives are shitty but the human condition is enduring. oh god i’m clutching my chest

I understand where OP is coming from, but I feel like we gotta remember how the demographic on TikTok skews younger and is fueled by an algorithm that keeps people fairly isolated in their own fandom circles. These are people who are new the fandom without the benefit of fandom elders telling them it’s okay to be weird and have fun. I think we all remember joining our first fandom and being concerned with ships being canon or not. Don’t erase the Zutara vs. Kataang wars from your minds. And let’s not even touch on all the drama in the H*rry P*tt*r fandom back in the day.

Furthermore, TikTok is an extremely different platform than Tumblr or even Twitter. The ever present eye of judgement is on you for being “cringe”. Being “wrong” about a fandom has a social punishment. There isn’t the space to anonymously indulge in whatever crack fantasy your heart desires. You can say “fuck it, embrace the cringe” all you want, but it’s easier on tumblr where nobody in your real life knows your user name while people see your face on TikTok.

Remember how we all promised we’d not be like older generations and shit in the younger? Well that means being patient with them through bad takes before they get some more experience.

I’m not saying you can’t vent, but I to encourage everyone to stay humble.

I’ve been here for fourteen years, do you think I remember? I don’t know who any of these people are anymore. I don’t know why they’re on my dash. I allow them to stay because they haven’t pissed me off enough to unfollow them yet. “Why did you follow this person?” I’m not sure I ever did. They’re just part of my ecosystem now.
