the most disorienting thing thats ever happened to me was when a linguistics major stopped in the middle of our conversation, looked me in the eye, and said, "you have a very interesting vernacular. were you on tumblr in 2014?" and i had to just stand there and process that one for a good ten seconds

I use Tumblr slang in the work chat to see if I can get anyone to out themselves as trash besides me obviously.

what were you doing at the devil's circle karen?!

Sir - have you any opinions on the current Berne Convention copyright length?

Avatar

It’s too long. 70 years after death feels wrong. I’m good with 50 years, though.

Avatar

It should be zero. What good is extended copyright after death of the creator in the 21st century? The right to be asserted as the creator of a work should be separated from the economical value from that point. All it’s doing now is filling the pockets of greedy companies.

And it’s also feeding loved ones and children after the death of the person who made the art has died.

Here’s a blog I wrote long ago about creators having wills. And a sample will. http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2006/10/important-and-pass-it-on.html?m=1

I like the idea of feeding Ash (he’s four and not yet able to work) with my stories after I’m dead. I’m not good with feeding my great grandchildren.

As an author, I don’t agree with this argument at all. Why should your past works support your family anymore than anyone else’s?

A man who works his body day in and day out and pays his taxes every year to support his family gets nothing when he dies. Most he gets is an insurance plan out of pocket.

Why should I get that sort of luxury? How am I better than the working man? How am I better than someone who worked dozens of times harder than me?

Even then, how are you sure the money is actually going to your estate? How would you make sure your family continues your legacy through hardwork, and not through old money?

It’s something I don’t exactly agree with. I think there are more ways to support your family after you’re gone, and I don’t know if extension of copyright is it.

So you’re arguing for a world in which no property of any kind, physical or intellectual lasts longer than the death of the person who bought it or made it? In which houses, stocks, comic book collections, all become part of the commonweal? Because right now, you can leave your property to your children or your loved ones. Touchable property and intellectual property. You can leave them money, too.

Anthony Burgess (who wrote, among other things, A Clockwork Orange) was told (wrongly) he had months to live. He wanted to support his family after he was gone, so he wrote books, fast and well.

He was lucky. It was a misdiagnosis and he didn’t die.

But I’m on the side of Anthony Burgess in this. I’m glad that Douglas Adams’ books took care of his daughter Polly when she was a small child whose father had just died, and more so when, a decade later, her mother died as well.

I’m a writer. What I do is write. I have adult children who are taking care of themselves, and a four year old who can’t. I’m in a couple of Covid risk groups, and could in theory be dead in a couple of weeks. (I hope I’m not.) PWhile there are “more ways to support your family after you’ve gone” that aren’t based around things I’ve made up and written down, I didn’t actually want to stop writing and making things up in order to do them.

I think the current copyright laws (death plus 70 for individuals, 90 years after creation for corporate things) are too long. But I don’t think you should lose your property, physical or intellectual, when you die.

I agree that copyright should last somewhat beyond the author’s death. Otherwise it sucks that money that would have been paid for this work is no longer being paid just because you’ve died. I think even 50 years is too long though. 25 years is plenty of time for dependents to find another source of income. Even infant children will be fully grown after that point.

I’d also be happier with copyright that counted from the creation of the work, rather than from the death of the creator. 50 or 70 years after the creation of the work will still do all that, avoid the sudden cut-off at death, and release creations into the public domain in a reasonable timescale.

Mm. I’m on the advisory committee of the Authors League Fund. We give money to authors in dire need. A lot of the authors who get the money are old. Some of them you’ve heard of.

I like the idea that when I’m in my seventies the work I did in my twenties will still be in copyright, and will still feed me and my family.

I don’t like the idea of creators in their seventies, eighties and nineties (or older) suddenly seeing their work put in the public domain and out there making money for other people, while they (possibly quite literally) starve. It seems both shortsighted and honestly a little entitled.

I feel like a lot of people imagine copyright running out as the work being put up in an archive where everyone can read it for free. And yes, works might end up on project gutenberg or something, but the reality is that they’ll also continue making publishers money. There’ll be fancy new hardcover editions, there’ll be audio books, there’ll be movies. All of this you’d still have to pay for after the copyright ran out, because you’re not paying for the story itself, you’re paying for the packaging or an interpretation of the story.

And all of that will be making companies money. So who would you rather want to make money from an author’s work? Some companies or the author’s children?

If you get rid of copyright after an author’s death, it’ll be the companies. And they’ll absolutely butcher the author’s work for profit, because that’s what big media companies do.

So if you want to enjoy people’s work for free, your problem isn’t with copyright, your problem is with capitalism

People literally make profit by making shoddy cover art for public domain works and putting them up for sale on Amazon. It’s why you’ll see these sorts of covers on literary classics that make you say “what the fuck” out loud:

(source) On the other side, you have companies like Disney just straight up stealing authors’ work (the whole Star Wars legacy debacle with Alan Dean Foster) and leaving them high and dry with little to no income from works that are still in print and still raking in profit.

Your standard not-Stephen-King authors really are not earning as much as you think they are. The Irish Times ran an article in 2018 highlighting that while news tabloids prefer to talk about big earners like JK R. and Stephen King, the reality of what most authors make is frankly bleak: “The survey of 5,500 professional writers shows that median earnings have plummeted by 42 percent since 2005 and are down 33 percent since the last survey in 2013. Based on a standard 35-hour week, the average full-time writer in the UK earns just €6.50 an hour – €3 less than the legal minimum wage.” (source)

And as Neil pointed out, many authors are left in poverty in their old age with little to no help. A notable Tumblr favorite is Peter Beagle, the author of The Last Unicorn, who lost his rights to his work to his manager and spent years struggling to pay his debts until he regained control of his work in late 2021-to early 2022. (Reddit link with the article because NYT paywalled it.) Peter was selling signed books, DVDs, and pretty much anything he could get his hands on to fund his legal fees. In the end, he was supported by fellow authors and his fans. Should he have been allowed to die in poverty because his book was no longer under his copyright control?

So no, authors’ work should not be taken from them while they are alive. Christ, some of us are barely earning enough to eat while we have the copyright. And yes, many of us have other jobs as well, but why should our work as authors be so severely undervalued that people will actively advocate for removing food from our table and that of the people we love?

Film Friends!
Just as a heads up: I read and give detailed professional feedback on screenplays significantly cheaper than you’ll find coverage on big pro reader sites.
While full coverage can run you $150+ easily for one script, I read scripts for just $15 a piece for features or TV pilots (webseries and short films are only $10). Included in your purchase are a numerical score 1-10, logline, synopsis, a list of strengths and weaknesses, and up to five pages of detailed feedback on your script overall!
As a little background on myself and my qualifications, I have been writing screenplays for five years, and I have two years of professionally reading them (first for a producer looking for scripts to produce, and now for the Atlanta Film Festival) and my feedback can get you a sneak peek at what a reader for a festival or competition might be thinking of your script in its present state. I make notes covering everything from pacing, to characters, to grammar and spelling, and everything in between.
So, if you have a submission coming up, or a final in a screenwriting class, or you just want to know how your script reads at present, message me here or at ashleighahaynesreader@gmail.com, and we can get started!

Hey everyone! Just as an update, I do have a website and business created for my script consultation work now! Covering everything from basic feedback to detailed script analysis to packages for indie producers, Fox & Crow is geared toward making quality coverage affordable and supporting emerging filmmakers. Come on over and take 30% off your first order of $20 or more using the code TUMBLR2k22. (Offer expires 5/31/2022)

The kids on TikTok think that just because he was a classic country singer, Johnny Cash was conservative??? My babies he covered a Nine Inch Nails song in his seventies.

Classic country singers (the majority of which came from poor roots) were always talking about how much The Man sucked because they were taking money from poor rural folk. You’re gonna tell me that’s conservative?? Get outta here.

And somehow on the opposite side of the scale with the same exact opinion the conservative kids say “I like the old country music, because there’s no politics to it” Woodie Guthrie’s got a “this machine kills fascists” sticker on his guitar? You think there’s no politics in 9 to 5 or Folsom Prison Blues?!

My sister and I are one step closer to becoming foster parents. Honestly, this is one of the best decisions of my life so far. I am ready to learn and be a great support person for some teens and kiddos.

Where we are on our journey:

we decided we want to focus on LGBTQ+ youth and pregnant teens/teen moms, as they are very often hard to place.

We have one more info meeting, and then we'll be deciding where to submit our application (to an agency or to DFCS).

We had one meeting with an agency where we heard the BIGGEST red flag EVER. They referred to foster kids as their "consumers." 🤢

We gotta get all 3 cats up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Doggos are all set, but I need to get them some checkups and vax records.

We're going to start with the bedroom soon. Ideas appreciated! What should we buy ahead of time, what should we wait on? We're anticipating being approved before March of next year (possibly as early as January or even December).

Any books or advice or other recommendations welcome!

We submitted our applicatioooooon!

We are in phase two of documentation (SO. MANY. FORMS. AND. BACKGROUND CHECKS.). We start IMPACT training in 2 weeks! We have to get our home ready in the meantime, get CPR certs. Agency says we may actually be done before December. We might have kids by Christmas. 😱 we do have an Amazon wishlist (https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3XWYFHMAUCEW?ref_=wl_share), a PayPal (paypal.me/HaynesFosterFamily), and CashApp ($HaynesFosterFamily), in case anyone would like to contribute to our building a wonderful, safe, and warm home for our future kiddos! As the process is moving so fast, we don't have a ton of time to save money and OOF it's a bit scary! We're so excited to make this a reality and help our our target groups (LGBTQ+ youth, pregnant teens, teen moms, and teen girls in general).

Dude if I could take a train 400 miles anywhere I would pay 14 dollars just for a seat, never mind all those amenities. Jeez.

Reasons I remind myself I don’t like my country number who knows what

While this is super cool in and of itself, I’d also like to remind people that modern high speed rail (most of which is in China these days) operates at around 200 miles/hour (China’s fastest train actually operates at 370+ mph but that’s an absolute state of the art maglev, the 200 mph number is average rail speed). If we actually invested in these train systems, you wouldn’t even need an overnight ticket to make a 400 mile trip. To put that in an American context, it would allow you to get from New York to Los Angeles (the famous Cannonball Run taken by car enthusiasts for decades) in about 15 hours, which is 10 hours better than the current Cannonball Run record. With that kind of speed, you could take an evening train halfway across the country (Boston to Chicago would be ~5 hours) for a weekend trip.

Trains are not just more convenient (no driving!), but technologically superior to cars.

It's been a ridiculously rough on an astronomical level the past few weeks, and I just feel hopeless. The world keeps knocking me down and I am just too damned tired to keep getting back up. I just feel like I might go soon. Might stop the pain and suffering. I don't see the future anymore. It feels like some dystopian book, where you only know you're going to die the moment you can't see a future. Everything but right now is just an empty space. And that's where I am right now. I'm just not sure how much longer I can keep trying to fill the empty space with an even emptier and more meaningless life. I don't know how to make it go away.

Anonymous asked:

what's so great about the mummy 1999?

are you ready for this?

it is the most wonderfully made, historically inaccurate, giddily fun, perfectly paced, goofy horror movie romance novel bullshit bonanza that has ever blessed the silver screen.

i mean it is just so beautifully full of every genre without being overwhelming.we’ve got: comedy, action, suspense, horror, romance, adventure, ancient aesthetics, and it’s a period piece. all perfectly balanced and blended into one movie.

and the characters are so LIT

we got our main babe, evelyn motherfucking” carnahan, a super-klutz librarian, total history nerd, and certified badass/damsel in distress. she raises the dead on accident, because she cannot resist books, and has the guts to put that motherfucker back where he came from and literally saves the world.evie’s greatest hits:

  • “what is a place like me, doing in a girl like this?!”
  • *after totally destroying the library* “i’ve just made a bit of a mess in the library.”
  • “no harm ever came from reading a book.”
  • evelyn: *upon opening the tomb* “i’ve dreamt about this since i was a little girl.”rick: “you dream about dead guys?”
  • “oops.”

then we’ve got rick “brendan fraser” o’connell, your not-so-typical battle hardened gun slinger with a heart of gold. he seems filthy, rude, and a complete scoundrel at first, but then he turns into a literal puppy, with massive heart eyes, that worships the ground evie walks on.rick’s greatest hits:

  • *screams at mummy*
  • *screams at sand*
  • *screams at things that are illogical to scream at*
  • *screams*

next is our Comedic Relief Character™, jonathan carnahan, who also rises above his trope. he’s there for the laugh sure, but is never useless. he actively helps to move the plot along and isn’t just there. he also is the farthest thing from brainless and annoying.jonathan’s greatest hits:

  • evelyn: “have you no respect for the dead?”jonathan: of course i do, but sometimes i’d rather like to join them.” same.
  • oh and that time he was like “IMHOTEP” and saved his own ass like that was so smooth, y’all know what i’m talking about right??

then there is ardeth BAE. he is the audience rolling his eyes because *sighs* white people. he’s tired of these motherfucking mummies in this motherfucking desert. literally prettier than everyone.(he has a much bigger role in the mummy returns, but is still so fab here)

and of course THE MUMMY. imhotep. actual emo. literally carved some poetry into the back of his sarcophagus when he was buried alive with flesh eating bugs, because he is that Extra™. just wants to bring his girlfriend back to life so he can make out with her without it being treason.

and all the side characters are also gr8.

now i wanna take a moment to talk about the romance. because it is so BEAUTIFUL. like usually in action movies it’s macho man undermines girl and they bone. not here. no time for that shit.

rick and evie have such a great relationship based on mutual respect and affection. they both cater to each other’s strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses. they are the literally definition of: “those two. in a fight, they’re lethal. around each other, they melt”

what else, i could literally talk about this movie all day.

the special effects have held up pretty well.the music score is GORGEOUS.the costumes are amazing.the makeup, especially for anck su namun, OH WOW.the george of the jungle era brendan fraser sign me the fuck up.rachel weisz.

so many good things.

it’s just great.

#i secretly rate every action movie from 0 to the mummy

it’s a beautiful mess of a movie that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and transcends time and posterity as the alpha mummy movie, and to those who disagree i beseech you:

A most accurate assessment. All hail 1999′s The Mummy.

I approve this post

“…There is hardly a thing I can say in its favor, except that I was cheered by nearly every minute of it. I cannot argue for the script, the direction, the acting or even the mummy, but I can say that I was not bored and sometimes I was unreasonably pleased..“ - Roger Ebert

It is a truly fantastic movie.

I’m not sure how many of my mutuals are familiar with the Bollywood classics of the seventies… but they too tended to blend action, romance, comedy (and a good deal of singing and dancing numbers) all into the same movie.

I say with high reverence that The Mummy is one of the most Bollywood of the big studio western movies in all the best ways.
