I hate tumblr’s idea of ‘problematic’ characters so much.

An example of a problematic character would be a stock character of a marginalized group that’s reduced to a conglomeration of stereotypes that have a harmful effect on people from that group in the real world.

A problematic character is not a developed character with developed flaws and belief systems that people irl happen to be at odds with. It is not a character that interacts with other characters in ways that hurt them within the narrative. That’s what a story is. That’s what creating characters means. Developing a fleshed-out fictional person to serve a function within one’s narrative.

And characters that are solely mouthpieces for the creator’s own moral views and belief systems, regardless of what those views are, are bad characters, and make bad stories.

First of all, using a slur to respond to people objecting to this indeed very racist image is really disgusting of you and I suggest that you take a moment to consider never, ever using that word again. And second, yes it very much IS racist. I’m an American Indian. I am telling you so. And I am about to tell you why. It’s a completely inaccurate caricature of American Indian regalia, used to misappropriate us as a culture and a race. Not to mention the very image is that of a white man collecting a bunch of “indians” for a reward, which white men did to my people, putting our rewards for “red skins”. This is a very painful history for us, one which is rudely being used as a joke. It’s not unlike dressing up like a holocaust victim - another thing I would be very offended by personally. The use of regalia in “sexy costumes” - and in a very ugly and inaccurate way, ie. looking like the ugliest handbags in Walmart - is in itself racist because it is taking history and culture that is sacred to us and degrading it. It’s the same offence if one takes a warbonnet and wears it without having earned it. It’s our medal of honour. You do not do that. You do not use fake regalia as a way of dishonouring - and it always is a dishonour to use reglaia as a costume - my people for your holiday parties. WE ARE NOT A COSTUME.

To simply define racism for you - it is any act that cold be considered poor treatment or violence toward a race.

To simply define misappropriation for you - it is taking something and using it for your own purposes in the wrong manner.
