I am slowly losing my mind over the shift towards video as the default media format.

I do not find this to be an efficient way to absorb information. I am bored and distracted by the time the largely unnecessary introduction is over. I can't use ctrl+f to find the specific information I'm looking for. If there are instructions to follow, I don't want to have to constantly pause and back up to the part I need.

At least give me a fucking transcript.

I can read faster than you can talk and these videos are wasting my time.

You mentioned you like Stephen Fry! Be wary, he is a Yid and he is only friends with you to extract wealth, which is the primary objective of a Jew. He may seem nice to you but in reality all he wants is more sympathisers and your money. You can't trust a Jew as far as you throw it. No need to thank me, education on them should be mandatory not volentery. Dirty, evil creatures. Keep up the good work with the books.

Look, this is a bit embarrassing, but I’m afraid that I’m a fully-paid-up honest-to-goodness barmitzvahed-and-circumcised Jew myself. And while I would, of course, like sympathisers and money, I most certainly do not want yours.

Also, it’s spelled ‘voluntary’.

…after the horrendous abuse I took this weekend for just being who I am, seeing someone that I admire stand up to similar in the way I always strive to, in spite of my anguish, is a comfort. I don’t know what it’s been about anti-Semitism these past few days, but I’m feeling so physically unwell with what I’ve faced that I can’t express what it’s like emotionally.

I’ll post this because the original 2012 answer from me has vanished in the last year. I don’t know why (at a guess, because someone tagged it as offensive). I answered this creepy ask originally because I wanted people to get some kind of an idea of the kind of antisemitic sludge I get on my asks, and this one was easier than most, because it wasn’t aimed at me, and I kept it up because of the number of people in the notes who went “Whoa, that’s actually a thing, huh?” and the people who felt safer that I wasn’t letting it go.

It’s about standing up to this nonsense.

 恭喜发财 everyone.

This one is just for Tumblr. You can tell because I am in my pyjamas. (I just had to teach my computer the spelling Pyjamas, after it corrected it to pajamas)

Dear Neil. Sometimes I think about the strength you must have to answer the fans' questions, I know that a lot has to do with marketing, but it must be tedious, and it must demotivate you a little from your work. Not only you but also the actors. Thanks for the patience.

Avatar

It's really not about marketing. That's why I like Tumblr, I think. It's too small for marketing. It only works if it's for fun.

I will be the last one here when they finally turn off the lights, because Tumblr is *only* fun for me, in no small part because the Industry Machine hasn't polluted Tumblr the way it has all the other social networks.

I think that's because the Venn Diagram of Weird Tumblr and Not Weird Tumblr is a perfect circle we call a hellsite, and the marketing dweebs are so confounded by what we do here, they focus on other, more predictable, social networks.

I've read about the demise of Weird Twitter around 2016 (gasp), how once Twitter stopped being a safe place to be weird, it rapidly became what it is, now. Interesting people tend to be weird. Creative people tend to be weird. We who love those people tend to be weird, and we like to be around people who reflect our vibe back to us. Why would any of us stick around in a Nazi club full of Incels when we can hang out here and remember the first time we saw Goncharov, or how the Feast of Neil Gaiman is celebrated in our homes.

Oh, and fuckin' WONDER WOMAN brings her loving, supportive, I am your mom and I love you unconditionally energy to every single post. She's the only Tumblr I follow with alerts turned on, because I always feel uplifted after I read something from her.

And Tumblr is maybe the only place on the entire Internet where I can be the best Becky I can be.

That doesn't even touch on all the art and fanfic and vintage photos and the endless stream of Debbie Harry that comes across my dash.

If you're part of the reason I am here, part of the reason Tumblr is special, thank you.

Hi Mr. Wheaton. We met briefly at Ad Astra some years ago, and I told you that I really appreciated your columns in Dungeon Magazine. Looking back at them now, I have to say that I've only gained further appreciation - it's really meaningful to see someone talking about their experiences sharing the things they love with the people that they love. At the time, you seemed a little sad when I mentioned them, so I hope this is a net positive, but I wanted to tell you that I appreciate them all.

Avatar

Oh thank you. I had fun writing them, but the subscribers HATED my columns, and were not shy about extending that loud and vicious hate to me. And nobody at the magazine pushed back or spoke up for me.

I mean, I was hired to write about gaming, to write columns about playing other games and living life against the backdrop and through the lens of D&D ... and when I did that, the readers were furious that a single page at the end of the magazine wasn't another page of monster stats.

And the editor who hired me, with that understanding, did not support me in public or even in private. I felt betrayed, left exposed and unprotected. I don't recall anyone, certainly not that editor, speaking up and telling these angry people that I was writing what he'd hired me to write, that he'd told me how much he loved every column I turned in, or giving me any support or defense.

That hurt me. I was still kind of a baby writer then, and being thrown to the wolves like that shook my confidence and made me question why I was hired in the first place. I concluded that it was a stunt to get attention, to draw on what was, at the time, my wildly popular blog, and to extract whatever they could extract from me.

In other words, it was shitty business being shitty business, but it was presented to me as something else.

I've never forgotten how bad I felt through all of that, how much it hurt and how betrayed I felt.

Oh, did I mention I got $50 per column? I did it all for about half a cent a word, not for the money but because I wanted to write and I loved (and love) RPGs.

Ultimately, it was a disappointing experience for me. I still think the stuff I wrote then was fine. It was the best I could do, it was what I was hired to do, and I wish I'd been more supported by the editors. I wish anyone at Dungeon had said a single kind thing to me when I quit the column, but I recall just feeling like the guy I'd been working with and writing for was just like, "oh thank god this is over now I can go back to be loved by gamers."

So, yeah, I was sad because the whole thing is sad and disappointing.

But, all these years later, it's really nice to hear from someone who enjoyed what they asked me to write for them.

May all your rolls be critical successes!

you know how all those applesauce packets were recalled for lead?

well. it turns out the cinnamon used in them may have been laced with lead on purpose.

fun times in the united states food industry right now am I right folks

In case you’re a buffoon (like me) and thought someone was out here meticulously hand-poisoning applesauce:

An FDA spokesperson said that one of the agency’s theories for the WanaBana cinnamon applesauce contamination was “economically motivated adulteration.” (…)
Economically motivated adulteration, or “food fraud,” can occur when a cheaper ingredient is added to a product to enhance it or bulk it up, but is not disclosed, according to the FDA. One example, the agency said, is when lead-based dyes are added to spices to give the product a certain color.

We love cutting corners to maximize profit at the expense of our consumers

hand-poisoning applesauce would be too tedious. these applesauces were poisoned in bulk for maximum efficiency

Turmeric is also frequently affected by this. A lead compound with a bright yellow color can be used.

I'm not gonna dox myself by saying precisely what I do for a living, but I am involved in public environmental health, and in the past have conducted home investigations in child lead poisoning cases. For years, foreign spices have been a problem, particularly for immigrant families who visit relatives overseas and bring spices back from south asia in particular.

During and immediately after covid, however, we started finding domestically sold spices coming back from lab testing with high lead results. Sam's club, wal-mart, etc. We used to tell families to buy domestically instead of bringing things back from India, Pakistan, etc, but even that isn't safe anymore.

You might - might - be safer with higher end organic products but I really just don't trust anything anymore. This isn't a new issue, but it's definitely becoming more widespread.

is there a reliable way to test spices for lead at home?

if the spice you're using is water-soluble, you can mix it with water and then use a water testing kit. they sell water-testing kits at the hardware store; ones that you send off to a lab are more reliable (but also more expensive).

you can also buy lead-testing swabs on the Internet. some of these are not reliable, so I'd recommend testing the lead-testing swabs. use a swab on something that you know is lead (a fishing sinker, a car battery, etc) and another swab on something that you know is lead-free (most things in your home, hopefully) and make sure you get the expected results.

note that lead-testing kits are not food-safe, so you should not just put pipettes / test swabs / etc into your spice jar. spoon out a small amount (onto a plate or whatever), test that small amount, and then throw that small amount away. (and then wash the plate.)

gonna add this consumer reports investigation from a couple of years back that made the rounds. they looked into a bunch of american spice brands and found that this is a huge problem across brands, regardless of whether or not it's organic (exact quote: "CR’s tests could not determine whether one brand was consistently better or worse than any other. And organic products did not have consistently lower levels than conventionally grown ones").

summary of the results, which tested for things like lead, arsenic, and cadmium beyond safe limits:

  • there was no safe oregano or thyme among their tests
  • for basil and ginger, only one brand was found to be safe in each
  • for paprika and cumin, half of the products were unsafe
  • a few of the spices they tested were considered "high concern" as in, their highest level of danger on this scale
  • consumer reports recommends growing your own herbs when possible because herbs and spices can be so dangerous to buy

fun!

“The brands are right. No one gives a f—k about X anymore, and no one will be outraged when you — yes, you, Elon Musk — have finally killed it. The days of serial tweeters like me lamenting the days of Twitter Classic are over. We’ve gone elsewhere and use X only sparingly, and only as a necessary evil. Without us, and without any advertising support, X will soon make no money of any sort, and you’ll be left only with the occasional $8 a month from @FreedomBob69. Oh wait, but here’s more reality for you, Elon! The Cybertruck is already not only a laughingstock, it’s also barely existent on the eve of its launch and, by your own admission, won’t turn a profit until a year and a half from now at the earliest. The Boring Company, established to make the Hyperloop a reality, has only built a glorified parking ramp in Vegas after burning through nearly $800 million in VC funding. Tesla’s revenues are sinking as the big automakers roll out their own EVs that are more appealing than your four-wheeled bachelor pads. Your company SpaceX will fail in its doomed mission to make humans a multiplanetary species, and its rockets won’t stop blowing up. And your biography sucked. So it’s over for you, Elon Musk. You are a public failure of a man. You’ll still be rich, but you no longer matter. That’s all you really wanted out of this, wasn’t it? You bought Twitter because you thought that owning it would make you the most special person in the whole wide world, only to reveal yourself as an unremarkable s—thead with no good ideas. You drove everyone away, including the companies that could have propped up your reputation for another five minutes. Whether you’ll ever understand this is of no concern to me, or to anyone else. You’ve shared your bucket, and it has nothing but holes in it. So, for Bob Iger, and for the rest of humanity, let me say: Go f—k yourself, Elon. Go. F—k. Yourself. Is that clear?”

Mr Gaiman,

What do you think about flawed people creating beautiful art? And especially when after you have enjoyed the art, if you later realised that people were hurt along the way…

thanks!

Avatar

I think every piece of beautiful art in history has been created by flawed people. I don't think there's any other kind of people.

If you enjoyed and appreciated a piece of art, if it helped and changed you, then you don't have to give that up because the people who made it were flawed.
