Okay but on a serious note Con O'Neill ate in these first few episodes and left no fucking crumbs. Last season we ended on deranged Izzy; now we have an Izzy realizing how toxic things can really get and WISHING he could go back to the days when he was the only proper pirate among muppets. And he's TRYING so damn hard and it would be so easy to play that in a cheesy or insincere manner, but we have Con O'Neill swinging for the fences, crying, begging for death, disheveled, trying to undo everything he did to get us all in this mess and failing and looking both miserable and delighted in his misery because he's getting what he thinks he deserves.

And YET we also get the subtle tear in the eye when Stede finds out what they really did to Ed. Like. You can feel how utterly heartbroken the man is just from a glimmer in the corner of his eye.

Love Izzy, hate Izzy, it really doesn't matter, not when he's played so magnificently by Con, and I salute him for everything he's doing in this campy gay pirate show.

it is so important that Ed wanted to live before he heard Stede's voice. It is so, so, so important that Ed had to be pushed instead of jump, that Ed struggled with the ropes, that Ed found his own desire to live even before he heard Stede's voice, because Stede gave Ed the strength to make it back, but Ed wanted to live, and Ed saved himself, and valued himself.

You can't live solely for other people and it is so important that they made sure we know that it's not just that Stede wants Ed to live, it's that Ed wants Ed to live.

How do I tell you how much I love this?

Having watched this video a normal amount of times, I have made the following observations:

  • Aziraphale, in slow motion, clearly puts on his angelic demeanor on purpose. He constructs the smile, and assumes the pose, and folds his hands together, and becomes the proper, prim angel he's meant to be. It's learned.
  • When no one's watching and it's just him, his brow is knit and his eyes are sharp. Or he's enjoying himself enormously, enjoying the sensation of releasing his wings, or listening to music, or wearing a smug, bitchy smile after having just been wall-slammed by his hereditary enemy.
  • When he's facing Crowley, he's smiling like the sun, he's joyous, he's unapologetically silly.
  • Did I already mention he looks damn good in slo-mo?
