Mother of Cosplay

It's fun to cosplay. It's more fun to raise a cosplayer.

I'm working on a series of classis movie monster pin up girls, and thought I'd share the process in case it contains any helpful tips for you guys! And the fist order of business is SHOES! I found all four of these pairs at Goodwill, along with a thousand other pairs of pumps to choose from. Why shoud good cosplay be expensive? The top row of images is for our Mummy. I bought those horrible blue suede pumps (image one), dyed them with Tandy Leather Factory's Eco-Flow coal black dye, which didn't take well since they were already dyed and all, but darkened them significantly (image two), and then covered them in gold leaf Rub'n'Buff. (image three) All that's left is to attach straps to criss cross up the legs. Not sure if I'll just use gold ribbon, or if I'll get suede straps to Rub'n'Buff to match... The second row of images is for the Creature from the Black Lagoon. I found these brown shoes (image one), and noticed that they were leather with a diamond pattern cut into them, exposing the suede between the diamonds. So if I dyed them with leather dye, they would keep that pattern... A scaley pattern. :D I used the same Tandy leather dye, but in Forest Green. I initially meant to dye them a consistent green all over, but got too much dye on one spot without wiping the excess off.... So I went with a wavy pattern! There is always room to fix your mistakes in original work! I had worried about how to color the heels, but it turned out that the leather dye stained them perfectly well! (image two) The third row is for our Vampire. The shoes have a pvc outer, so dying was out of the question! I ended up painting them with red and black Painters paint markers from Elmer's, and then covering them in a million coats of a generic acrylic clear coat to make them shine. In fact, I need to make them even shinier. The last pair we're leaving as is for Frankenstein. I think they are so beautifully ugly! We have a wolf-girl too, but she is making her own furry boots from heel less pumps.

I don't think this is how you handle pirates.....

Xander has what is basically a Captain Hook cosplay kit. It includes a sword, spy glass, map, and of course a hook, complete with plastic sleeve ruffles and jacket cuff attached. Xan: I'm Jake, and you're Captain Hook. *hands me hook* Me: Okay, Arrrrgh! Xan: Don't take my stuff, Captain Hook! Me: But that's what I do! I'm a pirate! Xan: Oh, okay. Here have my treasure. He proceeded to empty both of his treasure chests for me. He put every piece of jewelry on me and piled all of his coins and jewels into the ruffles on the hook.

Xander's gift to his Daddy on Valentine's Day.

I know it's not cosplay, but it involves sewing and a cute kid. <3

I cut out the pieces and used a leather hole punch to punch holes around all the edges, then fray checked the edges and holes. Xan stitched it together with a yarn needle and black yarn. The result was an awesome project that Xan could be very proud of!

This Batman now lives on our comic book shelf. :)

Ever have trouble finding boots in the right color? Tried spray-painting them and ended up with a dry, cracked mess? A fantastic friend recently advised me to paint leather boots (and any other leather goods) with floral paint. This is a spray paint that is light and flexible enough to use on live flowers. Above are the Poison Ivy boots I painted for a friend, which turned out fantastic.

One thing though: Wear them while you paint them, and maybe stretch your foot around in between coats. I didn't think of this, and while the paint did not crack at all, it started to split where the boots were stretched from walking. Next time I paint some boots, I'll let you know if I was able to fix this problem.

The paint I used is called Design Master, and you can find it at Michael's or Joann Fabrics. In the stores near me, Michael's had a better selection of colors and a slightly better price, but that may not be true everywhere. This color is "Holiday Green."
