i love long distance / online friendship specifically. very much. like there are... patterns and ways that distance specifically creates bubbles of understanding and knowledge and intimacy... wanna be able to tell when you're on your way to work because you backread on your commute and i see you in my notifs. 2 of my friends put their feet in the opposite sides of the atlantic ocean on a phone call once. love getting people's flight numbers so i can see on the tracker that they're delayed on tarmac and text them to cheer em up. love a shared playlist love a spotify jam love streaming. getting a goodnight message while you're making lunch and knowing how time is passing for someone halfway around the world... love making dinner and getting ":V :V :V" reactions in the chat and having to figure out what dinner emoji to reply with. when you get to hear all the little things... you know? sometimes you are actually closer to someone when you are riding around in their pocket all day.

“But…” they trailed off, dumbfounded. “Why? You could be a CEO, a scientist, a law–”
“I don’t want to be a CEO,” she said. “I want to be a secretary.”

“I like organizing.”
“Be a second banana?”
An affirmative nod. “I’m skilled at helping.”
“I just don’t understand,” they said. “HOW could you be okay with all of this?!”
“I enjoy the work.”
“BUT YOU CAN BE WHATEVER YOU WANT TO BE!”
“I know.”
“Then WHY?!”
She shrugged.
“Because I want to be a secretary.”
Honestly though, this is very similar to my mom’s experience. She’s always been super bright, but has realized as she’s gotten older that intellectual pursuits just aren’t her jam. She dropped out of her PhD program to have kids, and although she has her master’s and was a pretty good school psychologist, she hated having to make huge decisions. She’s a church secretary now and loves it, and she’s GOOD at it; she’s letting her school psych certification permanently expire this year with zero regrets. If you can be anything you want, that includes the things we don’t tend to value as highly as a society. Not everybody is built for or wants the “respectable” careers.

My grandma did this to me, saying that i didn’t want to get stuck on the outside, making coffee and filing papers. The thing is, that’s exactly what I’ve always enjoyed the most, making and organizing things. That would be enough for me.

Nobody seems to realize that if you tell people they can be anything they want to be they will. And not everyone WANTS to be doctors or lawyers or CEOs or scientists. Sometimes, they just want to be a secretary.
it took me a LOT of therapy before i was able to shrug off the effects of the Gifted Child Upbringing enough to realize that what i really wanted to be was a house husband and Local Queerdad who writes novels sometimes. god, i’m so much happier now.
ain’t nothing wrong with an ordinary life. don’t let anybody tell you you have to be the top dog to be worth anything.

As a secretary for a therapy center—outside of like shitty people in and out of the office, the jobs lit af and you get to look as cute or as Un-cute as you want everyday and it’s totes fine ALSO FREE STATIONARY!!?!?!

I agree with all of this and I also feel like the extreme competition for most “respectable” jobs is manufactured by having such a two-tier economy that people are desperate for the financial freedom only a few jobs truly allow.
If someone actually enjoys retail (my mother) and you need retail people why does a retail worker have to be punished with starvation wages?
Also when a minimum wage job goes up to a living wage and someone I work with goes “haha that’s how much I make now I should go work for Dominos” I always just say if that’s what you want to do then you should! You must be so excited that you can! But they just shake their head or admit they’d hate that job. Because when they say that they don’t mean “I should work there and would if I could afford to!” They mean “that job and those people are below me and shouldn’t make my wage.”
In conclusion the entire idea of respectable jobs is bullshit. Do exactly what you want and fight to get what you deserve from it and don’t let anyone tell you you should do anything else.
Normalize doing common, necessary things well. Normalize respecting people who do good work. Appreciate indoor plumbing and functioning electricity and a really good pizza. Appreciate phlebotomists who are good at getting a good sample on the first try.

I'm still in awe that not even a decade ago (2014, a year before same-sex marriage was legalized in the US), queer representation in children's animation was at the point where The Legend of Korra ended with Korra and Asami holding hands in the very last seconds and the creator having to come onto tumblr to plead with us all to understand that these two characters are canonically queer, the crew just couldn't show anything more (and were heavily implied to face restrictions) and now, in April 2023, The Owl House ended with multiple episodes highlighting how the main character is openly bi, her love interest is a lesbian with whom multiple on-screen kisses were shared, her mother proudly wears a rainbow pin and has read multiple books on sexuality and gender, her mentor is openly bi, the mentor's love interest is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, the mentor's adopted son has a genderqueer 'dad', the mentor's sister is confirmed to be aro/ace, the main character's best friend has two dads who share an on-screen kiss, the main character's pseudo-sister blushes around a nonbinary teenager who also uses they/them pronouns, minor characters blush and react to others in ways that suggest that they are also queer, there are different flags everywhere, and the child-god of the cosmos who comes to visit them all from time to time uses he/they pronouns. That's on top of the Afro-Latina representation, the neurodivergence and disability representation, and so much more. Let's see how far we've come, indeed!

✧ A Mothers Revenge ✧
A kestrel seeks revenge on a European Starling after it kills and eats her chicks. In the U.S, European starlings have a devastating impact on our native ecosystems in the entire United States. This species is known for their aggression towards other cavity nesting birds, outcompeting native species for nesting spots and food sources. They’ve been known to kill many native species from bluebirds, to woodpeckers, to kestrels. They are violent towards competing species, destroying their nests, and pecking holes in eggs laid by other birds. Not to mention, they also destroy crops and devour multitudes of grain each year.

I wanted to portray something intense to kind of grab people’s attention to this problem. Most people don’t know how horribly invasive they are. While they’re pretty birds, they’re not meant to live in the United States. I wanted to use colors like red (to represent anger, sadness, revenge, betrayal) to portray what native species have to endure every year towards a bird that was never supposed to even come in contact with them. And colors like yellow (to represent wrongfully perceived innocence and guilt).
The spills of blood can be represented as the successful revenge the kestrel has, or, the multitudes of blood spilled from native species by European Starlings.

Did you know? All the European Starlings in North America descended from 100 birds set loose in New York’s Central Park in the early 1890s. The birds were intentionally released by a group who wanted America to have all the birds that Shakespeare ever mentioned. It took several tries, but eventually the population took off. Today, more than 200 million European Starlings range from Alaska to Mexico.
Excellent piece, and excellent point, just note that the last paragraph is untrue. This Shakespeare myth has been repeated over and over and over again. Starlings were introduced multiple times to the US, both intentionally and unintentionally, probably over a span of multiple years. One of these introduction efforts was by the American Acclimatization Society, which were introducing European birds to make colonists feel more at home, but the species they chose to introduce had nothing to do with whether or not they were mentioned in Shakespeare, and many birds in Shakespeare's plays were never brought to the US.
There are two recent articles debunking this myth. One is this well-researched blog post, which links to their sources as well as an excellent /r/AskHistorians thread.
The second is in the New York Times, though of course the site is paywalled. However, their research efforts and the article that resulted agree: starling introductions have no tie to Shakespeare whatsoever.

This is basically what my physical therapist had me do for my back problems last year and it helped with the pain so much! Also walk for at least thirty minutes a day, even if it's just in small chunks throughout the day.
Also a must if you bind!!!
