eighteen year old, senior year in high school, tyler, has a girlfriend and they had a kid which was totally unplanned and his girlfriend leaves and dumps the kid on him right after she gets out of the hospital and tyler is still sleeping in the hospital room because his baby girl, who he can’t think of a name for yet, is still being looked after.
a week later and tyler finally takes his baby girl home and he names her ruby.
four months later and tyler is finally out of school and he’s finally takes ruby out in her carrier, because he’s not afraid of being judged as a typical teen dad, and goes to the local cafe to relax and have a tea.
a year later and tyler takes ruby to the park. he sees a boy who looks about his own age sitting against the tree he used to sit under with his ex girlfriend. he’s holding ruby and she’s giggling as he’s staring at this brown haired boy sitting with his head against the tree watching the clouds. after debating with himself he finally gains the courage to walk over to this mystery boy and shyly asks if he could sit down. when the boy looks up to say yes, tyler is in love. the boy’s soft eyes and pink lips are enticing to tyler. he slowly sits down and puts ruby in his lap. he whispers for this boy’s name and when he get’s a quiet, soft, voice saying joshua, he knows he’s absolutely in love. the boy tugs on his lip ring slightly having the sun make it shine a little. ruby perks up and laughs as she reaches her land out to touch joshua, only to have tyler stop her and tell her to ask first. he says yes and she pokes his cheek making him smile for the first time since tyler’s been there. after seeing his smile tyler is certain he’s in love. they talk until the sun goes down and ruby is asleep, asking questions about each other. it’s eleven at night and josh, as he asked tyler to call him, asks if tyler’s girlfriend, or wife, is waiting for him to come home. tyler’s face becomes flushed as he realizes he’s got to explain his story. he tells josh what happened, josh intently listening to every word and slightly nodding. after he finishes he falls into josh’s open arms, tears slipping from his eyes, ruby in his arms, and josh shushing him and rubbing his back.
half an hour later and tyler finally got himself together and apologizes time after time to josh. josh assures tyler everything is fine, that even though they just met he can talk to him whenever, tyler thanks him and falls into his arms once again.
five years later and ruby is sprinkling pastel yellow flowers down the aisle as josh and tyler walk to the front with their arms linked.
ten minutes later and they slip the rings on each others fingers.
thirty minutes later and they say their vows, they say those iconic words, and josh swoops tyler off his feet and into his arms, connecting their lips for what feels like eternity.
five minutes later and ruby makes grabby hands at josh and calls him dada. josh tears up a little bit and tyler is smiling ear to ear because ruby likes him and accepts him as her dad. josh picks ruby up and kisses her cheek and she kisses his. in a small voice, ruby whispers in his ear that she loves him. josh smiles and whispers back that he loves her too. tyler hears and is crying as he engulfs them both in a hug.
two minutes later and josh and tyler are walking back down the aisle with ruby in tyler’s arms as their family and closest friends are cheering and crying.
an hour later and they’re at the reception. ruby wants to make a speech so they hand her a microphone and she proclaims that she loves her daddies and she’s very happy that they love each other. tyler leans into josh and they smile, softly making their lips touch, smiling into the kiss. they pull back and, at the same time, start giggling and say the other one tastes like cake.
nine hours later and it’s their first night as a married couple. they lay in bed, wrapped up in each other’s arms, legs tangled with the other’s, whispering i love you’s to each other, as they think back to five years ago. five years ago under the oak tree at the park, leaning on each other, josh rubbing tyler’s back, as they drift off as the happily married couple that tyler is so grateful for, especially because it was the result of a heartbreak. tyler is half asleep when he rests his head on josh’s chest and murmurs that everything gets better.
