we probably all know a creature with “raven hair and ruby lips” and chances are, “she’s a restless spirit on an endless flight.“
Of Myth and Legend → Hecate
Hecate is the Greek goddess of the crossroads. She is most often depicted as having three heads; one of a dog, one of a snake and one of a horse. She is usually seen with two ghost hounds that were said to serve her. Hecate is most often mispercepted as the goddess of witchcraft or evil, but she did some very good things in her time. One such deed was when she rescued Persephone, (Demeter’s daughter, the queen of the Underworld and the maiden of spring), from the Underworld. Hecate is said to haunt a three-way crossroad, each of her heads facing in a certain direction. She is said to appear when the ebony moon shines. (x)
↳ Hypnos & Thanatos
Those two, always running around, looking for ghosts. I wonder if they’ll ever really find something. Maybe the ghosts are just in their heads.
Banshee//in Irish mythology a banshee is a faerie messenger of the underworld, who wails when someone is about to die//
“It is said that if a banshee becomes aware of a human’s presence watching her, she will disappear into a cloud of mist. When she does, it is accompanied by a fluttering sound like a bird flapping its wings. The Irish do not believe the banshee causes death, but merely warns of it. Although during the Middle Ages it was said that the banshee would also protect the souls of those of good heart and deed after they had passed on.”
Persephone// According to mythology, Persephone had an idyllic childhood. She was raised by her nurturing mother and played with her father’s other daughters, the Greek goddesses Athena and Aphrodite. She was always cheerful and compliant. As signs of womanly beauty began to shine along side her childlike innocence, the adolescent goddess Persephone unwittingly attracted the attention of the Greek god Hades, ruler of the Underworld. and The young goddess Persephone’s radiance would assuredly liven up a place for the sleeping and the dead. The god Hades, however, did not bother to charm young Persephone. He simply abducted her on a bright sunny day when she stopped to pick wildflowers in a field near her home. Hades reached up from the Underworld and snatched Persephone away, taking her to his Underworld kingdom and making her his queen. Although the young goddess Persephone grew to love Hades, she remained lonely for her mother and the life she’d known on earth.
