The House of Tides Or, Why Knowing What You Write Matters

I preface this post with the disclaimer that I’ve broken my personal rules to write it. It’s that important - I had already talked at length about racism, sexism, queerantagonism, and other nastier fandom elements prior to my hiatus. I had resolved to not write extensive posts or engage fandom on those topics as a self-imposed condition of my return.

Kink was not on that moratorium. The messages I’ve received to date make me glad that it was not. This post is as much fueled by them as it is by my own severe discomposure.

There are currently two lenses through which a painfully high number of BDSM fics are written in the Dragon Age fandom: through Solas as an unassuming, lithe Daddy Dom, or through the lens which regards the Iron Bull as a brutish, savage Dominant. Both of these affect the image of BDSM and its practitioners, as well as adversely influence those curious about kink, and so I shall address both.

But really, we need to have a talk about Solas.

okay one of the things I desperately needed in Inquisition that WE DID NOT GET AT ALL was an assassination attempt

like damn one wasn’t just needed IT WAS A LOGICAL STEP. not even leliana could’ve stopped and all assassin attempts and the inquisitor is a Big Target

honestly if I was a writer on the dragon age team, it’s something I would’ve insisted on writing. 

after one of the missions (either Into the Abyss or Wicked Hearts and Wicked Eyes, depending on which you did first), josephine greets you at the gate and tells you to go to your room (you can’t do anything else until you go there) to get some paperwork done and you get a scene of the inquisitor writing and then going to bed. slight time skip to the middle of the night and an assassin sneaks up into your room up the balcony or disguised as a guard through the main entrance. either through accidentally making a noise or a guard sounding an alarm having noticed the assassin, the inquisitor wakes up, small tussle, then the assassin skips out and Skyhold is put on lockdown.

you have to go through Skyhold, find clues, and then find the assassin with maybe a companion or two. everyone is in pajamas. everyone is complaining about being woken up in the middle of the night. if you decide to grab iron bull from his room (you have to go to their room to wake them up), he’s naked (like in that romance scene) and he spends the rest of the time running around in a towel. only sera and cole are actually in their clothes because cole doesn’t need to sleep and sera just doesn’t give a fuck and usually falls asleep in her clothes

Okay so I LOVE this idea, but I have a problem with Bull’s characterization in this. Absolutely no problem with Bull sleeping naked, but those big circus pants he has probably only take a few seconds to pull on. He personally wouldn't care and if the threat of the assassin was close enough, he'd probably skip the pants. He wouldn’t care about the towel, it would probably be foisted on him by someone else. His focus is the Inquisitor, possibly his Kadan.

He’d probably get around to offering a quickie, but no way it would be serious. Woken up by his Kadan and them explaining what almost just happened, his first overt response wouldn’t be concern since they’re either not injured or not injured more than they would get out on their excursions, it would be anger. He would be so beyond angry because it hides fear. If an assassin could not only get past Skyhold's defenses and guards, but Leliana's, Varric's and what's left of his own sources, they have to be very good. So something extremely fortunate happened for the Inquisitor to wake up before their throat was slit in their sleep. As the Inquisitor tells him what happened, whatever sleepiness he has burns away as a hard look forms in his eye. He'd offer the quickie when they finished explaining everything but he and the Inquisitor both know it's for levity and not close to a genuine offer at the moment.

So, yes, great idea, and I don't blame OP at all for what they wrote for Bull considering how overly Bioware sexualizes Bull (I've gone into this before and won't do it again. Basically, yes he's sexual, but Bioware turned him into a joke.) but it's not quite in character for me. Otherwise, this is fantastic and I definitely wish it was an option to play!
