Once Upon A Time finds its King Arthur

Once Upon a Time is filling out the Round Table.

British actor Liam Garrigan will portray King Arthur, EW has learned exclusively. Garrigan, whose credits include 24: Live Another Day, Strike Back and the Starz miniseries The Pillars of the Earth, will first appear in the season premiere and will recur.

Though King Arthur has yet to be mentioned on the series, viewers know that Lancelot (Sinqua Walls, who will return in season 5) was disgraced from the Round Table over a woman—ahem, likely the not-yet-cast Guinevere, whom Arthur is said to harbor eternal love for.

“As we do on Once Upon a Time, we’re doing our own twist on Camelot, on Arthur’s background and on his relationships with Merlin, Guinevere and Lancelot,” executive producer Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis say.

Camelot is slated to play a big role in the fifth season after the Apprentice revealed in the finale that the mysterious Sorcerer – who may be able to save Emma (Jennifer Morrison) after being consumed by the Dark One – is actually Merlin.

Jennifer Morrison Is Reading Old Fairy Tales to Play 'Dark Emma' on Once Upon a Time

Emma Swan’s gone evil. The May finale of Once Upon a Time saw Storybrooke’s heroine sacrifice herself to the darkness. So what does season 5 hold for the bounty hunter/princess by birth? Star Jennifer Morrison says she and showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are “creating a villain that has never existed” – with a little help from fairy tales of yore. Morrison, 36, visited the New York Public Library for inspiration on Emma’s wicked transformation. “In order to build Dark Emma, I’ve been doing a bunch of research there with some of their mythology books and old fairy tale books and just looking back through the history of swans and the etymology of ‘Swan,’ ” she tells PEOPLE.

“I was given the opportunity to go to the rare books department, and they showed me some of the most incredible first editions of old fairy tale compilations that were just stunning,” she says. “There were some stories in there that I’d never heard of, so I have yet to read them. I have a list of them that I’m working my way through now!"

The actress – who was in Washington, D.C., Tuesday to speak to young women at the ANNpower Vital Voices Leadership Forum – says she’s "eternally grateful” to the library’s curators. She’s also thankful to work on a series with such rich opportunities for growth.   “Villains are fun to play as an actor, but no matter what, it’s also just fun to have something new,” she explains. “It’s so rare to go into season 5 of a show and feel like a character is evolving and changing at such a drastic pace that I really get stretched and challenged on a daily basis."

TVLine has reported that ABC is trying to cast Merlin, King Arthur and Guinevere. So … are the characters headed to Camelot? ”We’re going to be going into another land, as we usually do,“ Morrison teases. "Emma is going to be in a place in her life that she has never been. "She spent her whole life working so hard to overcome the hardships that she endured and to try to be the best version of herself and try to be strong and, ultimately, in the last few years, to try to be the savior that she is supposed to be stated to be,” she adds. “And now she’s in a position where she is free of all of that and is facing all of the potential darkness that she has tried to avoid. So we will see what that means for her, and we’ll see how she grows and changes because of that,” she says. “We’re also going to see everyone in her life fighting to try to get her out of that place and help her overcome it.” [x]

Once Upon a Time Season 5: Get Details on Merlin and Other New Roles

As revealed in Once Upon a Time‘s Season 4 finale, the only person who can rid the realms of the Darkness once and for all, and thus save newly christened Dark One Emma, is Merlin. But in finding the elusive Sorcerer, viewers will meetsome other familiar faces from Camelot lore.

TVLine has learned exclusively that in addition to casting Merlin for Season 5, the ABC series will also introduce King Arthur and Guinevere, all in heavily recurring roles. Here now, the provocative details:

For MERLIN, Once is seeking an African American in his early 30s to early 40s and boasting a natural British accent to play “a man with great wisdom and intelligence beyond his years,” someone who has always put duty in front of his own desires, even at great personal cost.

ARTHUR is described as someone who came from low birth and now is king, a “good and just ruler” who, beneath the surface, “is a master manipulator who can carry a grudge to the grave, and maybe beyond.” He harbors an “eternal burning love” for Guinevere that can lean toward being a bit… controlling. For this role, Onceaims to cast a gent in his mid-30s to early 40s, and again a British accent is mandatory.

The casting call for GUINEVERE, meanwhile, seeks a Latina in her mid-20s to mid-30s to play a “headstrong queen” who fell in love with the dashing Lancelot — previously played on Once by Teen Wolf‘s Sinqua Walls, at right, but dead in the current timeline — her husband’s most trusted knight. She now must balance her own happiness with the well-being of Camelot.
