While I loved working on the official Queen’s Thief character lineup, I worked on it over a year and a half ago, so as Return of the Thief’s release drew closer, I knew I wanted to do a newer piece to celebrate. I wanted to include Pheris in this one, and explore a more dynamic composition, and saturate it with symbolism. So without further ado, here it is:
It’s the longest I’ve ever spent on a single piece— about eight weeks, altogether, and I’m really pleased with how everyone came out. I’m going to put all the symbolism below the cut, but here are closeups so you can play I Spy:
Anton Chekhov, from a diary entry featured in “The Notebook of Anton Chekhov,”
why are there so many posts about asexuals being immune to sirens. people. sirens don’t lure you in with sex (necessarily). they sing about whatever it is that you want most. they could sing about mothman or cinnamon toast crunch and guess what then your asexual pirate is fucking dead
this is the only kind of ace discourse i ever want to see on my dash. the only kind. ever again. good job
Do you think the sirens would be grateful that they finally get some variety?
“Oh my god we can finally just sing about pasta thank the fucking gods.”
I’m not asexual but I’m fairly certain sirens would do a far better job luring me into the depths with a song about pasta rather than sex…
I mean.
“WHAT THE FUCK STAY AWAY FROM THE ROCKS.”
“FUCKER THEY SAID THEY HAVE FETTUCCINE CARBONARA AND HOT GARLIC BREAD OVER THERE HANG ON BITCH.”
This is true; Odysseus heard them promising him knowledge of the future. So the next time you see artwork like this:
Remember those sultry naked chicks are saying “We’ll tell you the winning lotto numbers.”
Them: “We have unlimited wifi at incredible speeds~” Me: *diving headfirst into the water*
This post is a blessing

The thing that gets me about Gen? (I hear you: His snark! His cleverness! His adorable petulance!) His kindness. Gen is so kind. The thread running through this entire series is Gen being excessively kinder than he has to be, kinder than anyone ever expects him to be, kinder than they even want him to be. (I’d cite a bunch of examples but I know you know. And if you don’t, just consider this a prompt for pondering during your next reread.) Heck, Ambiades edges towards the fringe of being a decent human being and Gen is like “you know what, I almost like this guy.” Gen may smirk, snap, talk back, whine, boast, and verbally spar with anything and everyone, but he is a thief, and it’s all just sleight-of-hand, distracting you from the hidden strings he’s pulling in favor of as many people being as all right as he can possibly make them, oftentimes at great personal risk/cost. We joke about it, but Gen really is looking into the camera and mouthing, This is a love story.
I love Emily’s version of this scene, couldn’t help but draw it myself too :’)
one of the best scenes
