Tales of a Vet Tech

@prevethead

Here you'll find little snippets of my experiences as a vet technician, pre-veterinary student, and animal lover. (Warning: There are some graphic photos of animal injuries and surgeries posted here.)

My baby just tested FIP positive. I have no idea how she could've gotten it. My heart is breaking.

Three of my coworkers are pregnant. I'm going to start wearing a mask at work because clearly its contagious.

Mama and baby are doing well. Mama has lost all of her swelling around her belly and looks like a horse instead of a barrel on legs now. She's also much more comfortable with people visiting and touching her baby. Baby is learning how to run and kick when they get to go out in the pasture. It's rediculously cute.

363 days of waiting later and we have a baby quarter horse. She was born early on Tuesday morning. Her color came as a total shock since we were expecting (and hoping for) palomino or grey. I have no idea where this chocolate color came from. After spending 2 minutes with her I don't even care about her color anymore! Now we just have to figure out what to name her. I can't wait to get out of class to go see her again. Name suggestions are welcome!

The baby is born!

I repeat: the baby is born!

Baby Horse Update

     Looks like our mama horse is getting restless tonight! I'm afraid to get too excited because the last two times we thought she was going into labor turned out to be a few long nights sleeping on an air mattress in the barn. I have midterms tomorrow so I really need to stay in and study so my sister is going out to keep a watch tonight.

     Her rear end has been really squishy for the past week and her teats are starting to bag. These are both signs that labor is near. Tonight she's starting to pace in her stall and throw her head. Hopefully this means that a baby is on its way!

More crazy xrays! This cat was brought in for limping and upon xray we found not only a broken leg but a BB imbedded in the leg. We have no idea if these two events were related or not. I've actually come across BB's and pellets lodged in dogs and cats all the time during xrays that the owner knows nothing about. 99% of the time these are in animals that were previously strays. Is this something only common in my area or do people shoot strays with BB and pellet guns everywhere?? PS. Sorry for the poor quality image, this is a photo of a paper printout of the radiograph.

Sorry for the long absence folks!

I'm on foal watch tonight! My sister's horse is due this week and she showed some signs of labor last night so we slept in the barn just in case but no baby yet. Fortunately the barn has 24hr camera on the stall so we've been checking on her every hour for signs of labor. Maybe it'll be tonight! Photos to come soon!
