if you reblog something and add a ton of tags to boost it, that doesn't do anything. your heart is in the right place, but tags on a reblog are for organization or commentary. they don't bump it up in the tag feed or count towards "trending."

it doesn't harm anyone to do this! it's just not something you need to spend time on.

i know I've said this before, and i wanted to recycle my old post(s) about it but can't find it.

Putting trigger/content warnings in reblog tags IS STILL USEFUL to anyone blocking those tags. It's also a decent spot to leave a short note to prev/OP like the person in tags who reminded me of the former :)

This is a great tip for those new to tumblr! Adding tags to someone else's post doesn't do anything outside your blog - there is no algorithm, and the post will only show up under the original tags in the search.

What tags are great for is having an extended psychological breakdown while pretending everything's fine er searching for posts on your own blog.

The tags do not always work.as intended.

For example. It doesn't matter what I tag shit with

If I search my blog for the tag I get "huh there's nothing here"

Doesn't matter if I have one thing in said tag or a hundred

Bit of advice here, that is not the fault of the tagging system but of the search system (and it's sometimes worse on my phone). When I'm on desktop or mobile browser and I type "blogname.tumblr.com/tagged/poetry" I will always get every post to which I have added #poetry.

If your tags have more than one word, on desktop I can usually leave a blank space between them. Sometimes your browser may require you to add %20 instead:

The archive tag filter can also help, but only with featured tags of which you can have 24.

fun fact about me: When I was 6 years old I sent so much hate mail to the president (the second Bush) that the mail carrier had to tell my mom I needed to stop before we got FBI’d

I was COMPLETELY unaware of the US political scene or why the adults in my life hated Bush, but I knew I hated him because he let people shoot wolves from helicopters and that’s mean and shitty

I also had a poor grasp on how stamps worked, so given that I wasn’t allowed to continually throw money away by putting stamps on my presidential hate mail, a lot of the times I just drew squares with little pictures inside on the corner.

Love, love, love reading more proof that everyone should encourage the children in their lives to write to elected officials--it teaches them about citizenship and can also be very funny.

When I taught second grade, one of the options for students who had finished their work was to write a letter to the president. I would send all of the letters in a big envelope at the end of every month.

Watching my students get more and more frustrated with him (and concerned about his wellbeing) was not the result I'd hoped for when I came up with the idea, but it was kind of hilarious.

See, Obama had a standard packet with information and activities about his dog he'd send in response to letters from very young citizens...and of course his office sent one back to our class every single time we sent mail.

So eventually all of the letters looked something like this:

Dear President Obama, I am writing about the environment. I am sad that the Great Barrier Reef is hurt. Also the Amazon Rainforest. Can you help? PLEASE DON'T WRITE BACK TO TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DOG AGAIN. WE ALREADY KNOW ALL ABOUT BO. WE COMPLETED THE MAZE AND COLORED HIM IN. It is good that you love your pet a lot. But try to remember the environment. It is also important.

"Isn't it weird that [thing humans commonly eat] is poisonous to literally every domesticated animal" I mean, there's a pretty good chance that [thing humans commonly eat] is at least mildly poisonous to humans, too. One of our quirks as a species is that we think our food is bland if it doesn't have enough poison in it.

Humans have a really weird mix of mundane superpowers.

We're not fast and don't have a lot of natural weaponry but we're bizarrely tolerant to a broad range of toxins to the point that one toxin is considered a morning necessity for some to perform at work. Gotta love us.
