my fave greek history story to tell is that of agnodice. like she noticed that women were dying a lot during childbirth so she went to egypt to study medicine in alexandria and was really fucking good but b/c it was illegal for women to be doctors in athens she had to pretend to be a man. and then the other doctors noticed that she was 10x better than them and accused her of seducing and sleeping with the women patients. like they brought her to court for this. and she just looked at them and these charges and stripped in front of everyone like “yeah. im not fucking your wives” and then they got so mad that a woman was better at their jobs then them that they tried to execute her but all her patients came to court and were like “are you fucking serious? she is the reason you have living children and a wife.” so they were shamed into changing the law and that is how women were given the right to practice medicine in athens

Yeah, this isn’t some Greek myth story about a hero or demigod or something, Agnodice was a real person who actually did this.

Headcanon: Professor McGonagall has a muggle wife she never mentions to the students, because they never ask.

Four years after Harry’s left Hogwarts he visits McGonagall’s home to talk her out of retirement, and the door is opened by a woman he doesn’t recognise. Confused, he introduces himself and asks to see McGonagall. The woman recognises the name and invites him in, saying Minerva will be home soon. She then talks a mile a minute, but not about the war - about the stories she’s heard about the golden trio from their head of house. About how Harry stood up to Umbridge, and how clever Hermione was, and how Ron had been able to beat her chess game, and how PROUD Minerva was of them all.

By the time McGonagall does arrive, Harry and her wife are chatting like old friends. Minvera’s wife calls her things like “Darling” and “Pumpkin.” Harry cannot believe his ears.

Harry is invited to tea every Wednesday from then on. He always looks forward to it.

but lets be real here, even with the “darling”s and “pumpkin”s Harry still wouldn’t catch on and he’d go home and tell Ginny all about McGonagall’s lovely gal-pal and Ginny would have to be like “babe…that was her wife”

ok ok listen i know a lot of people have been bringing up the fact that they dont like brooklyn nine nine because they feel like it’s a “pro-cop show” and it’s “idolizing a gross system” but like?? please try to understand that that is not the point of this show at all?? they have explicitly stated the problem with the police system in one of the episodes, where amy lists real concerns and holt puts up a poster that says “tell us how we can be better.” this is one of the very few shows who i see actually addressing real problems like gun control issues, homophobia, racism, and transphobia (it was just a mention, but still way more than any other show), while still being lighthearted and hilarious. just because this show is set in a cop setting does not mean they are praising anything?? please don’t diss an genuinely funny, good show so quickly because of that. it’s not perfect but it’s trying so much more than anything else on tv right now.

It should also be noted that outside of the squad itself, there are many, many policy officers that are depicted as corrupt, racist, and otherwise not at all praised or glorified. Both narratively and explicitly through character dialogue, the world of the police force that the characters exist in is criticized and challenged – not romanticized. And the point of the show, at the end of the day, is not the great acts of heroism these cops do. It’s about the deeper bonds between the characters and their completely zany quirks; cop stuff is just like, On The Side. So idk just … i completely understand aversion to any cop rhetoric in media that isn’t obviously negative, but maybe before you write off b99 as inherently disgusting or condescend any of its viewers who dare to praise it, maybe actually become familiar with the show itself?

this is important and also just to add on, this is one very small squad (one captain, one sergeant, and like 6 detectives) in one precinct, in one city in the us. it’s known by the characters that, by and large, cops are not like them, and they kind of acknowledge that while they can’t change that, they can themselves be “good cops”. notice how they hate the vulture and wuntch who are portrayed as bad people but also seen as being the kind of cops/captains that the 99 squad wants nothing to do with. notice how in coral palms the cop they run into is all the negative stereotypes of a cop and it truly bothers jake and holt. they know they are not the standard and the show, i think, makes that very clear.

1) Black Americans created jazz. 2) Jewish Americans created comic books. 3) These things are said to be the only original American art forms.

This should be mentioned every time someone talks about how black people’s culture is “inferior” or how America is a “Christian nation”, because there is no original American art that is white and Christian in origin.

All this is true.  Though I’d add one.  Another Black artistic/cultural development that I do think is truly American is Rock-n-roll.

Musical theater is also an original American art form, and also created by Jews.
