A brief moment of rationality from the bird place.
this headline is so fucking horrible why is it whenever indigenous people are murdered everyone avoids saying they were murdered
it’s so important to show solidarity with indigenous people right now and remember that this was a hate crime. rising hearts is an indigenous run organization and they’re asking everyone who can to braid their hair on monday regardless of if you’re native american or not
He was reported missing and then found dead 4 days later in a forest. Which certainly sounds extremely suspicious. There was a domestic violence report where he was wanted as a suspect but it's not clear about the proof of that, lord knows the Kansas police probably aren't unbiased about indigenous people, or what it could have to do with his death. Very odd.
I will say newspapers generally avoid saying "murdered" just after someone dies until a clear case is made on whether it was murder. This is a standard precaution, which is why you'll see phrases like "found dead" "in suspected murder" or something. That first headline is very odd though, in how it makes it sound so banal, like he just passed away in his sleep, rather than being a perfectly health 27 yr old found dead in a forest.
i bet crossing spears with someone to block entry into a location feels so fucking good
not to sound old fashioned or whatever but getting rid of payphones is a mistake, and the only reason we should do it is if we're replacing them with free, public use phones. Having the ability to reach out to others in every place of public congress and transit is an important safety feature and the advent and adoption of smartphones does not negate their utility.
I know i've already lost this battle, so it's somewhat pointless to say, but smartphones die. chargers aren't always there. smartphones break. some people don't have them. Being able to call someone and ask for help, to get in touch with friends and family, without relying on something you yourself own, is a societal good.
Furthermore, expecting everybody to have a single piece of fragile technology on them at all times to the point that critical services are not available without them is truly mind-boggling to me. This goes for things like restaurant menus and transit maps as well. you should be able to navigate the world without a brick made by Apple or Samsung, and if you can't, then something is fundamentally broken. It's one thing for new technology to augment an existing real-world experience, it's another thing to usurp it entirely.
instead of continuously over-donating to ao3 when those running the site are racist zionist sympathisers who shut down support of palestine from its volunteers 1 / 2 (among myriad other issues that u should NOT be funding) please direct your attention to these incomplete fundraisers for people in gaza and various tangible operations doing work. this is a call that if u have donated even a cent to ao3 to a) match that in your donations to palestinians/causes and b) stop donating so uncritically and unconditionally to ao3, pressure them. id like to direct u to @end-otw-racism

For those who don't know, this piece is titled 'Unfinished Painting', by Keith Haring. He painted it about a year before his death of AIDs. I believe he actually finished other pieces between this one and his death. He left the majority of the canvas blank to represent his life and art career cut short due to HIV/AIDs. This was a deliberate choice and commentary about all that we lose (both personally and culturally) by ignoring the AIDs crisis at the time (1989). He was devastated he didn't have time to make more art. 'Finishing' Unfinished Painting is straight up spitting on Haring's grave and shows no understanding to the meaning behind the art. The AI interpretation doesn't even follow his extremely recognizable shape language and symbols. This is why people are angry about AI art. All commerce images and no meaning or humanity
