i really dislike people who try to force others to be positive about something they don’t like, especially when that thing is being criticized for its racism, sexism, homophobia etc. it’s just another way to silence minorities when they speak out against the negative way in which they are represented (and bad representation IS harmful to minorities irl).
every time poc criticize racism in a popular movie/tv show/novel, a swarm of white people are always like “Just enjoy the damn thing! Stop being so negative, you’re ruining the experience for everyone and you’re the reason why the fandom is so divided”. and it’s such a freaking evil thing to say. they have the privilege of being able to ignore racism whenever they want to, and expect us to do the same. they’re in their perfect little bubble, and how dare we make them uncomfortable by reminding them that their fave movie/tv show is treating its characters and actors of color like shit? instead of realizing that the fandom is “divided” because some fans are racist pieces of shit, they blame it on people denouncing racism and defending themselves. we should just not say anything when people are disrespecting us and treating us like shit, right?
us poc are expected to keep quiet about racism in media and fandom spaces just because white fans don’t like to be uncomfortable. well guess what? we are uncomfortable because on top of enduring racism irl, we also have to face it online and in the fictional world of movies/tv shows. so yeah, i have to complain about and criticize racist directors/productions companies/writers until they get the freaking memo and stop producing racist content. THEN i’ll be able to enjoy my fave movie franchise as uncritically as you do, Becky.
