Filming for the next season of Project Runwaybegins next week, Zac Posen reminded us at his Resort appointment today, right after he pointed out his new optical range. The designer has been keeping busy growing the reach of his brand on television and in stores. We know we'll be tuning in if and when he gets a TV project about #CookingWithZac off the ground. But expansion is just one aspect of the current Zac Posen story. When it comes to the clothes themselves, he's dialing down and further refining the message of his Fall show. Here, too, he was eager to emphasize his serious dressmaking chops; frivolities and excesses have been pushed to the side. "Clean and streamlined" were the words he used, and they were apt descriptors of a cocktail number and evening dress made from neoprene and cotton ottoman, both in subtle neutrals. The cotton ottoman looked especially fresh; it'd be just the thing for an invitation that calls for daytime black tie. On the more effusive side there was a draped cape-back column gown in a striking coral red and an hourglass, off-the-shoulder sheath in navy and black jacquard. A green-and-red brocade jacquard looked stiff and stuffy by comparison, but Posen was thinking along more modern lines when it came to his finale. A paper taffeta skirt gave his grandest ball gown an effortless swish.

No one would accuse Zac Posen of being a minimalist, yet he incorporated some of the principals of the spare school of design into hisresort collection, working in neutrals such as ivory, beige and navy on silhouettes cut with a relative cleanness. As Posen said, “As the clothing gets cleaner, the lines can get more architectural.” That approach brought a modern, sporty spirit to the lineup, even in the grandest looks. A classically feminine fit-and-flare dress done in nude Neoprene had a light, purist quality. Posen let the silhouette and sculpted seamwork make the impact on an exaggerated ballgown done in deep navy. Daywear, too, benefited from a subdued elegance, such as the caped blouse and cropped trousers modeled after Posen’s signature suits.

When you hear "Zac Posen," you immediately think of gowns -- large, sweeping confections that are favored by Met Ball goers, and can't always fit down a runway.

The stars of Posen's resort 2015 collection were still the gowns, in rich solid hues and a floral brocade, but there were also a few standout ready-to-wear pieces: namely, some very luxurious-looking separates in shiny peach neoprene, including a single-button trench, as well as a pair of slim, cropped and flared silk trousers modeled after those Posen himself likes to wear. His studio assistants kept asking him to make a pair, he said, and it's easy to see why.
