In case you’re not aware, Tumblr has recently announced that on the seventeenth of December they’ll start purging all porn and porn-adjacent content on Tumblr.  Why does that matter to LWU, you ask?  Well, they’re using their bots to identify it, and we’ve all seen how well THAT works.  One of my Wander posts even got flagged as sensitive for no apparent reason.  What I want to do is reassure you all that I’ve taken steps to back up all of the content on LWU to my hard drive using a tool I was recommended a couple weeks ago.  I’m going to continue to do so on a regular basis just in case, so there’s very little chance that my stuff will be lost.

I’m using this one!  It condensed my entire blog as of November 20th into one 4.36 gigabyte folder.

Any notes on how to use it? I can’t figure it out.

Okay, so here’s how to do this.

First off, go here and make sure you have Python installed.  For Windows it should be the very bottom link, the x86 MSI Installer.  You don’t have to do anything but install it.

Second, go here, and click “Clone or Download” (the green button on the right).  Select “Download ZIP”.

Make sure you have WinRAR or 7zip or something installed that lets you extract zip files.

Next, make a folder on your desktop.  I named mine “Tumblr Backup”, and in the following instructions I’m going to assume that’s what you’ve named yours as well; replace “Tumblr Backup” with whatever you name yours if it isn’t.

Drop the zip file you downloaded into Tumblr Backup.  Go in and extract it; this should create a folder called “tumblr-utils-master“.

Open your Command Prompt.  If you don’t know how to find that, click your start menu button and type “CMD”, which should give you this:

That should open this:

That frog over there is blotting out my profile name on my computer.  Whatever your profile name is when you sign in (e.g. “Max” or “Snugglebuns” or “froglord69”) is going to be in that spot on the address path.  If it instead says something about Windows and System 32, that’s okay, what I’m gonna tell you to do will go to the right place either way.

Next, input this command–keeping in mind that the parts in bold should be changed based on your profile name and what you named the folder on your desktop:

CD C:\Users\froglord69\Desktop\Tumblr Backup\tumblr-utils-master

There!  Now you’re in the right folder!  Next, enter this command, replacing the bolded bit with your own blog name:

tumblr_backup.py yourblogname

You should see this:

Then just…let it run!  It took less than five minutes for my computer, though it will vary by processor and connection.  Once it’s done, you’ll have something like this:

That “index” opens in an internet browser.  It’s basically a webpage stored directly on your computer.  Some pics of mine:

So…not pretty, but it’ll save the content of your posts.  Hope this helps!

From someone who’s survived MySpace, livejournal, deviantart, and fanfiction.nets’ content purges and bad policy updates, here’s some advice on how to get through tumblr’s recent bullshit:

- don’t knee jerk delete. I know it’s tempting to peace out immediately but hang on and do the other steps first. Out right ghosting and erasing everything is how fandoms die.

- archive everything on your blog you want to keep

- tell your followers how they can archive and keep your work too. A lot of fic and art were only saved from ff.net and lj because other people saved it first. If you’re cool with other people saving your work for them to personally keep, let them know this. You can absolutely discourage reposting but I really do highly recommend you allow people to personally save fic and art they like and are worried will disappear forever. Digital Dark Ages are a real thing.

- tell people where you’re jumping ship to. Give links. Keep that info up, even if you’ve left the site.

- go through who you follow and find out where else you can follow them. Save their work if they’ll allow it. It’s tedious as hell but if you want to keep up with people on here clicking on their page to check in is the best way to do it.

- support places like ao3. This is exactly why ao3 asks for donations a few times a year. They are a 100% anti-purging, judgement free, ad free non profit run by an elected board and protected by lawyers. Places like ao3 literally save fandom so please continue to support them and other similar archives. This is exactly why ao3 is so important.

Also, go read the source policies and official Tumblr statements in addition to user analyses and reactions. It’s important to keep abreast of developments over time; staying informed is your power in this situation. Memes and reaction posts are funny and are a useful way to vent / provide commentary, but some of them create an inaccurate picture of what’s happening and should not be taken as evidence on their own of what developments have happened.

The average rating for Peter Capaldi’s last season was 5.8 million viewers. No episode that season rated above 6.68 million - and that rating was for the season premiere. That season featured the only two episodes to rate below 5 million viewers EVER since Doctor Who was revived in 2005.

The season before that the average rating was 6.20 million. That was the first season since 2005 not to have a single episode rate over 7 million viewers. Every season before that had an average rating in the 7 millions, except for season 4 in 2008 which averaged 8.42 million. Incidentally, that was David Tennant’s last full season, and the final full season before the Moffatt years.

Whilst the ratings have only been announced for 4 episodes so far, not a single episode of Jodie Whittaker’s first sesason has fallen below 8 million viewers. The average rating so far has been 9.15 million. Its true that it is unlikely the average will stay that high - ratings have technically been dropping week by week. Exactly as happened every season in the past - it is perfectly normal for ratings to fall towards the middle of a season, and rise again for the finale.

A lot of the media will just do anything to discredit this season because they can’t handle the fact the Doctor is female now.

Some quick life updates. First of all, I graduated college! In the fall I’m headed off to a PhD program in English, and I’m so excited!! I started this blog when I was in high school, and I never IMAGINED I’d end up where I am, with a college senior thesis and all.

As for this blog: It is obviously on permanent hiatus, but I’m leaving it up for you lovely people, and also, because I’m so proud of the work I’ve done, and so grateful for the lovely people I’ve met here. I’ve been so busy IRL that I haven’t been able to talk to a lot of you in a long time, but you all mean a lot to me. 💖

My handle is @ starsinherwake (space due to Tumblr tagging 😂), and I’m mainly blogging about anime and games, and resharing art.
