Club 5 is not your momma’s loyalty club: our pin gets you into underground parties, gets you free booze, and yes—cannabis, thanks to our partnership with Organic Kind, NELA’s best organic weed delivery biz.

Not only do Club 5 members get a free gram when they order from Organic Kind, but in the month of December, all those who become new Club 5 members will be entered into a drawing to win a free 1/4 of one of Organic Kind’s premium strains when they mention Club 5. That’s a $100 value, and the winner gets delivery free of charge at their convenience.

As you know, 5 Every Day is free. We give you five interesting things to do every day in Los Angeles, for love of this amazing city. But we do need to keep the lights on, and that's where Club 5 comes in. Club 5 is our loyalty club: every year we issue a pin, and when you wear it, you unlock discounts all over town. For the 2016 edition, we've added tons of new businesses, so on top of places like MOCA, The Cinefamily, The Hammer Museum, the Ace Hotel, and Otherwild, 2016 Club 5 members get perks at Dune, the Natural History Museum, the La Brea Tar Pits, Vidiots, Burgerlords, and more. Purchase your 2016 membership now for only $15! If you buy more than one, they're just ten dollars each through December 31st. They make pretty killer stocking stuffers. Just saying.

Los Angeles

40 years ago this month, about a mile Northeast of our home in DTLA, the mayor of Los Angeles unveiled a six story, 60-ton piece of public art that would grow into a PR nightmare. It’s been known by a number of derisive nicknames over the years: “The Psychedelic Nickelodeon,” the “Kitsch-22 of Kinetic Sculpture,” “Three Wishbones in Search of a Turkey,” and on and on.

A million dollar civic disaster, the Triforium was artist Joseph Young’s weird, wonderful masterpiece — a “polyphonoptic" sculpture that was supposed to use motion sensors and a massive vintage computer system to translate the movements of passersby into psychedelic patterns of light, sound, and music. Way ahead of its time, the poor thing basically broke the day they flipped the switch — sitting pathetically for four decades in various states of disrepair.

Some of our friends (including Tom Explores Los Angeles host Tom Carroll, plus the peeps behind 5 Every Day, the stellar events app started by the band YACHT) have just kicked off an initiative to restore the old warhorse to better-than-new condition, in hopes to honor the vision of its undersung creator, while re-enlivening an under used corner of Downtown. The Triforium Project kicks off this past Friday with a party under the great behemoth.

We talked to Tom to find out what they’re up to.

Tomorrow, on December 11th, a piece of public art downtown called The Triforium is turning 40 years old. You've probably seen the Triforium before: at six stories tall and sixty tons, standing at the corner of Temple and Main, it's hard to miss.

What you might not know is that the Triforium is a “polyphonoptic” sculpture; when it was built in 1975, its 1,500 multicolored glass cubes lit up in synchrony to music from a 79-note glass bell carillon. Trouble is the computer that controlled the system never quite worked, and the Triforium—decades ahead of its time—has fallen into disrepair.

To kick things off, we're throwing the Triforium a 40th birthday party tomorrow. Come join us from 4-9 to wish the Triforium a happy birthday! Speakers will include the daughters of Triforium artist Joseph Young and architectural historian Daniel Paul. Our friend Tom Carroll of Tom Explores Los Angeles will give free tours of the vintage (and usually off-limits) computer control room, and dublab will DJ Triforium-inspired musical atmospheres all evening. We've got rainbow GIF photo booths thanks to PHHHOTO, and food trucks Seoul Sausage Company and Pattywagon Burgers will be parked on Main. And, because it's a birthday party, we've got FREE CAKE from Charm City Cakes West!

Joseph Young's Triforium is celebrating its 40th anniversary—and you're invited.

We will have speakers, roving history tours, dublab dj's and since it's a birthday, they will be cake as well. The birthday will kick off a fund-raising campaign to raise money to not only restore the Triforium to its former glory but install much needed updates.

Tell your friends—it's going to be a party!

Link: 5 Every Week, Gary Indiana

Gary, Indiana is a place. And a song n’ dance number in The Music Man.  It—or rather he—is also an artist, and just about one of the most interesting people to mix it up in the 20th century.

- Zac Pennington and Claire Evans for KPCC’s Take Two
