My favorite part of my dnd group right now is that their collective anxiety creates a better story than I do when planning the session.

Me, intending to have them either fight or befriend a pack of CR ½ wolves: As you’re setting up camp tonight, you hear howling in the distance.

My player, a ball of anxiety with legs: hey, uh, dm? What phase is the moon right now?

Me, reading their mind and quickly flipping pages to the CR 3 werewolf: Oh, you know. Full.

prompt maybe where kara senses that lena can’t sleep... because her heartbeat is going CRAZY next to her

It’s not like— it’s not like you mean to listen.

It’s not like you wake up in the morning and think, okay, which nearby human bodily processes would make the best soundtrack to breakfast today. It’s just that it’s very hard not to listen, what with the yellow sun powers and the superhearing and the way you can’t lead-line your ears like you have your eyes.

Earth is incessant. Dogs yapping and reality shows blaring and car engines whirring. Intercoms buzzing and incinerators burning and shoots pushing up through the soil.

And that’s without even touching on the humans themselves. Each one a symphony, a cacophony in their own right; cleared throats and wet swallows and varying levels of digestive turbulence that you’d really rather not be privy to.

And the heartbeats, Rao. The heartbeats. Arrival on this planet had been akin to arrival at a drum and bass gig only to find they’d locked the doors and forgotten the bass; just seven billion drummers playing their own individual tempos relentlessly in your ears for the rest of your life.

It’s a good thing you’d learned focus, concentration, compartmentalisation, as quickly as you had. Otherwise you might have had to spend the rest of your earthly existence with Jeremiah’s industrial spec noise-cancelling earmuffs clamped over your skull.

It’s still tiring. It’s irritating. It’s work, constantly, to not be driven mad by it all.

But every so often, your powers grant you enjoyment of a moment so beautiful, so incomparable, that all the other noise seems worth it. The way Alex’s heartrate trips the night she introduces you to her first girlfriend, the way Maggie presses a hand to her back and a kiss to her cheek and you get to hear your sister fall in love. The sound of that tiny heartbeat inside Lois’ belly, far earlier than an ultrasound could ever detect it; the gift of the knowledge that Kal is about to become a father, that you’re about to become an aunt.

And sometimes, rarer still, it’s not a moment but a person that makes it all worthwhile.

First it was Eliza and the way her steady pulse never faltered as she rocked you through panic attacks, through night terrors, through a culture shock so profound you sometimes wished Krypton’s combustion had detonated you as well.

Then it was Alex, and the home encased by rib and flesh that her heartbeat came to represent. The message encrypted in each contraction of cardiac muscle; a Morse code thudding out through the ether to remind you that no matter how bleak it gets, you are not alone.

And then, more intense, more unanticipated, and infinitely more devastating, it was Lena.

Do you ever think about why Catra wears that mask? I'm staring to wonder if its just practical to keep the hair out of her face.

anon oml.. do not get me started lkdfjd but ok since you ASKED-

at first you might think its just a nod to the original MOTU catra design but noelle stevenson 😤😤 they crafted an incredible metaphor from it where the mask represents the lies that catra learns to tell herself and everyone around her for the sake of her survival in the horde. she puts up emotional walls to avoid heartbreak and clings to the idea that power will ensure her safety. the anger and ambition and pushing everyone away is a “mask” she wears to protect herself.

whats interesting to think about are the times she’s shown not wearing her mask:

1) when she’s a child -- her walls haven’t been built yet

2) 4x03 when she has the nightmare about the portal -- for once her real feelings are breaking through her facade

3) 4x10 when she breaks down crying - major symbolic moment, the walls are crumbling to reveal her true desires and she realizes they aren’t protecting her like she thought they would

4.) Save the Cat and the rest of S5

the idea of horde prime taking her mask.. is just. completely horrific oh my god. whatever was left of her emotional armor from season 4 was ripped away, leaving her completely vulnerable while she faces the full devastating force of all her heartbreak, grief, and mistakes. yet it’s in doing so that she

[takes a break from writing this to go outside and scream]

yet it’s in doing so that she finally sees clearly through the fog of her childhood trauma. she sees that all she ever wanted was love and safety, and adora is there offering these things to her and all she has to do is reach out and accept them.

its a thoughtful and beautiful parallel--catra not wearing the mask as a little kid when she was relatively happy and felt loved bc of adora = not wearing her mask after 5x05 when she finally finds her way back to that place 😭💖

BUT DOES IT END THERE?? NO OF COURSE NOT THEY GO ONE STEP FURTHER AND MAKE THE MASK PART OF ADORA’S NEW SHE-RA FORM BECAUSE IT REPRESENTS ADORA LEARNING TO SHARE CATRA’S TRAUMA AND HELPING HER HEAL FROM IT. IN THE SAME EPISODE THAT CATRA LOSES HER MASK ADORA TAKES IT AND WEARS IT HERSELF, SO ITS LIKE SHE TOOK ON CATRA’S BURDEN, OK THANK YOU GOODNIGHT

No wait one more thing

the parallel trauma / coping mechanisms 😭😭

Honestly, pragmatic villains who are just too fucking sensible and practical to be bigoted is a fondness of mine. I mean, consider a straight-up ruthless, heinous villain whose minions, henchmen and assassins are 90% female, for no other reason than because all these other wannabe Overlords of the Universe were overlooking these perfectly good, competent professionals because of their sex, and they’re loyal as well because they know he’s the only employee who’ll actually treat them fair. What else are they gonna do, turn good?

The hero team has five dudes and one woman and for fuck’s sake she’s wearing heels.

Someone write the story where the the henchmen seduce the heroine to the bad side with statements like  “How many times last week have you wished you had another woman in the room to make eye contact with while some dude went on and on about his prowess?” “Ugh. I guess that’s one advantage of working on your team – you’ve always got someone around to sympathize.” “Yeah, no. That’s not my point. I have not wished that at any point in the past week, because our boss doesn’t do that.  Anyone who points out a way in which his prejudices are interfering with his effectiveness gets a gift card and an extra vacation day.” “… …. Are you hiring?”

“OK, like, yes that sounds appealing, but your boss is still trying to subjugate humanity! I can’t be party to that!” “You’re allowed to stab anyone who manspreads.” “Yeah, but –” “Free menstrual products in the locker rooms.” “…” “…” “…” “OK, I didn’t want to mention this – we usually try to not discuss it in recruitment, because we like to save it as a surprise for orientation – but see these pants?” “Yes, I see your pants. I know what your uniform looks like, you’re all wearing the same pants.” “Yeah. Well. Watch this” (sticks hands in pockets)
