LEGO 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone

Let’s speed, keed! This is a LEGO Ideas set that I’ve watched with some interest for a while now — and seeing as it was conceptualised by friend of the blog @rorzatherocketcycleracer, it’s only natural that I would give it some prrrromotion!

This is a set that has gone above and beyond in replicating the Sonic the Hedgehog experience, not only in its 16-bit accurate aesthetics but also in terms of its construction. Whereas Viv’s original concept used standard height bricks for the Green Hill chequerboard pattern, the finished model uses innumerable 1x1 plates stacked in twos to get the squares just right. The instructions are divided into six sections, and each numbered bag generally proceeds from left to right, starting the adventure off with Sonic and blast( process)ing through the stage to the showdown with the despicable Dr Robotnik and his Egg-O-Matic hovercraft. There’s a Chaos Emerald in every bag to add to the display stand, really making each stage of the instructions finish with a sense of accomplishment. I’ve photographed the set bit by bit as each bag was assembled to try and share the experience with you, but I recommend you get your hands on it yourself.

As any Transformers fan will tell you, when a digibash becomes real, there is great joy. I could not be more happy for nor proud of our Viv for everything she has accomplished here.

Felt the need to share this news since I helped promote Viv's Lego Ideas submission: the Green Hill Zone Lego set has been unveiled, and it's out on January 1st!

Like most Ideas sets, it's seen some big changes in becoming a real product. Sadly, it's no longer a Sonic Mania set with a Death Egg Robot and two Hard Boiled Heavies, but in exchange the terrain has gotten a lot more detailed, as have the Badniks, and we've gained an Eggmobile. Overall it's less of a traditional Lego playset and more of an adult collector's display piece (complete with 18+ age rating and black box), but you can definitely still see key elements of the original pitch in there

Overall I'm just really happy that this exists at all, especially in a world where Mario is only getting $200 collector's sets and a series of weird electronic board game parts. I'd been wanting something like this since I was a kid. Congrats again to Viv for making this happen! Can't wait to build this myself

I don’t use Tumblr very much anymore so I hope you don’t mind I’m piggybacking off your post Bobby, you easily have the most comprehensive writeup and promo shot selection I’ve seen on this site Thank you for your kind words and I hope you and everyone else enjoys it! The Ideas team and I worked really hard on this and had quite a bit of fun, and while the focus had to shift in order to get it made I’m quite pleased with the final result.

It’ll be exclusive to LEGO stores (online and offline) at first, but it’ll arrive at other retailers in due course.

I will also be sharing alternate builds on my Twitter some time next month, to keep as many promises made during the original campaign as I can, but also just because it’s fun!

Wooloo rolling in and rolling out.

I wanted to make a cute animation with Wooloo but as usual it took forever to get around to actually doing. Sorry for anyone following me expecting consistency.

Mr. Vector Prime, has anyone Rickrolled you?

Dear Astley Accoster,

While that specific practice has not been done upon me, it does bring to mind a predicament I once faced. For a time, I was interested in locating lost fragments of the Covenant, as the tome that persists to your present vantagepoint is incomplete. Midway into my research I was contacted by what I believed to be an upstanding young Maximal, who told me he had acquired a section from the Book of Logos. In actuality, when I met this character it was the Predacon transmetal Waterfoul, who confronted me with the perplexing visage of his beast-vehicle form! It was barely an inconvenience, but then I will never understand what drives such a prankster.

youve told us often that bumblebee is a heroic autobot. but are there any realities where he instead follows the path of the villainous decepticons?

Bees follow their queen. If that queen is misled or manipulated or unworthy of leadership, the swarm goes with them.

(spoilers for IDW Sonic #33)

Welp, I gave IDW readers a solid day to see it for themselves before I went and spoiled the surprise. But as a dozen messages I’ve received across social media and a blurb on the Sonic wiki indicate, people have caught a certain little cameo in IDW Sonic #33

That cameo is, of course…

…a Sonic-ified version of my fursona, and her little army of Feroxes

Yes, Evan very generously snuck this in as a nod to my Sonic Chronicles playthrough. Folks were wondering in the Twitch chat if it would be possible for the Sonic Chronicles Chao designs to show up again, and sure enough Evan happened to be drawing a Chao-centric arc at the time, so I guess it all just lined up perfectly. (I’ve actually been sitting on this for two whole months because she had to get my blessing to use my fursona before this made it to print.)

Maybe the best part, which I’m not sure anyone has pointed out yet, is that you can also spot me a second time with even more Feroxes in tow

It’s truly incredible that this is my little mark on the Sonic franchise. This will be my legacy. Thanks again to Evan, and also to Reggie Graham for the stellar coloring!

Dear Vector Prime, what exactly is a seeker? Can any flying Cybertronian be a seeker?

Dear Seeker Searcher,

I would love to give you a definitive answer, but I'm afraid this is a matter currently being decided in the Grand Forum of Kolkular as we speak. A literalist reading of the ninety-second article of the Decepticon Catalogues might not support your view, but I understand Sabrejaw has put together a solid case that Termagax's early tracts refer multiple times to an atypical Seeker candidate—the armada-class interceptor—as a "hunter-seeker skyship". While these predated the onset of modern-day Decepticonism by half a billion years, it would be political suicide for any established figure to rule against her—a fact that is sure to make Skyraider commandant Fearswoop truly furious.

Dear Vector Prime, has any Malgus Wreck-Gar done anything of note that we haven't seen already? I really liked Wreck-Gar and I want to know more about his exploits.

Dear Vicegripped Vidiot,

I am sure that Wreck-Gar thought he was doing the Autobots a favour when he decided that he'd keep up appearances while they were busy with Megatron's trial on Cybertron. Like any Wreck-Gar, he seems to have taken to this task with aplomb; unhappy with his ability to keep what passed for order by himself, his immediate next step was broadcasting ultra-high frequency radiowaves from an unoccupied Sumdac Tower to give every robot in the state marching orders. Last I heard, he was declaring mandatory fun in what is now known as the Principality of Junk. I suppose that when Optimus Prime's team is off-planet, anything that can go wrong will go wrong!

Can you explain what a "bruh moment" is? Thank you mighty Vector Prime

Dear Momentarily Mindful,

A bruh is a cybertronian unit of time equal to one hundredth of a breem, or approximately five of your Earth seconds. I suppose that would be similar to a moment.
