i cant believe there are people out there who will only watch an anime if its on a streaming service like have you forgotten your roots? the anime episodes split up into 3 parts on youtube in low quality? the fansubs that just did whatever the fuck they wanted half the time? the websites that are almost certainly mining your data for bitcoin while showing you terrible ads? they were there for you long before you even knew what crunchyroll was

netflix subs just wont give you gifts like this

Back from Shin Ultraman  and maaaaan it was so good. I'd say it's been a while since I've enjoyed a movie so unabashedly being what its loves and wants to be, but I did watch Glass Onion like two months ago

A bit hard to jump in blind, but if you're in it just for a humanoid alien shooting stuff, you'll get some of that at least. The soundtrack here is on point though for every single second it plays. Just so incredible on both listening to individual pieces but also just setting the backdrop and tone for their scenes. Desperately hoping a vinyl release happens, which I don't doubt it eventually.

In any case, hopefully don't have to wait another 8-10 months to maybe see Shin Kamen Rider in a theater here

Each year, I usually do a small 3x3 of the music I've listened to and really loved that year. Since I was bedridden and miserable for a good quarter this time and ended up listening to less than usual, I figured this would be a good time to just think about just stuff I enjoyed this year and reflect on what I want more out of the stuff I take in in 2023.

Top Left to Bottom Right:

  • Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers by Kendrick Lamar
  • Kirby & the Forgotten Land
  • NOT TiGHT by DOMi & JD BECK
  • Turning Red
  • Raw Data Feel by Everything Everything
  • Pop Team Epic Season 2
  • Melt My Eyez See Your Future by Denzel Curry
  • Unpacking
  • Everything Everywhere All At Once

In general, I feel like I really found a lot more enjoyment in more “sincere” media this year? Be it various expressions of acceptance or reflection of growth through sentimental objects or just being really fucking stupid with its humor, I feel like I found a lot more time seeing what I enjoy about myself and trying to find that in more stuff vs. trying to keep up with everyone and watching “more”. I do wish I listened to more albums this year though - only within the last couple of months did I start exploring some other great 2022 stuff, like Steve Lacy’s new album and “oh huh, that new Harry Styles is alright.” Looking forward, I don't know if I have much I want to change or fix in my consumption habits. As always, I'd love to push forward into enjoying movies for myself and watching more, but that's just a global "media for me" problem to solve.  That and just less Youtube binging anyway. Here’s to 2023!
