I always get a little sad when people write off that line as narmy, or cheesy. Sure, out of context, you could say that wondering who you’ll eat ice cream with is kind of corny. But there’s something so important to remember, and that’s the fact that Roxas associates the two together in such a way that they’re practically inseparable.

In his first two weeks with the Organization, Axel took him to the top of the clock tower, introduced him to ice cream; when Roxas questioned what Hayner/Pence/Olette were doing in Day 14, he barely even understood the concept of laughter (a line cut from the movie that is always one of my favorites, personally). He learned about what friendship was hand-in-hand with ice cream. Even befriending Xion came with him more or less mimicking what Axel did with him.

This is all he ever had, and all he knew. Before he had ice cream and friendship, he had the name given to him by Xemnas and his number. Ice cream is something you have with friends. By the time he asks that question to Xion, he’s already betrayed the Organization. He’s already told Axel off and cast away that friendship because of his own lack of trust. She was the last of what he had to hold on to, the last of any stability in his changing life and an existence that he didn’t have even the slightest understanding of. He was in the dark, and Xion was part of the little light that was left. By asking “who else will I have ice cream with?” he was really asking “who else will be my friend?” He had nowhere to turn.

I find it hard to write the line off when I think about the context in which it’s placed. He knows so little, he understands so little, but to Roxas, those are two things that go hand-in-hand, so of course he’s going to simplify things in a way that works with his fairly limited world view.
