Books That Will Ruin Your Life

(trigger warnings under the cut)

  • A Little Life, by Hanya Yanagihara

This book, which is about 800 pages long, is one of the best pieces of literature I have ever read. It follows four friends after they move to New York City and pursue their goals, but most of the story focuses on one of the men: Jude St. Francis, who has a mysterious past that has wrecked him emotionally and physically. But despite the darkness of the subject matter (and it gets DARK) the acts of love and kindness and friendship from the people in Jude’s life will bring you to tears. It’s a gorgeous study of trauma, human relationships, and the marriage of joy and pain that inevitably comes with living. I read it two months ago and have thought about it every day since. It’s one of those books you want everyone to read and no one to read. (DEFINITELY check out the trigger warnings for this one.)

  • The Traitor Baru Cormorant, by Seth Dickinson

This book is a sprawling political fantasy, packed with detail and diversity and some of the best, most complex worldbuilding I’ve ever seen. Baru grows up under the shadow of imperialism and eventually joins a rebellion to break free of the empire that has begun to take over the world. She’s also a lesbian, which is forbidden in the new empire, but against herself is drawn to the enigmatic Duchess Tain Hu. There are devastating twists, loves, and heartbreaks that will break your heart along with Baru’s. To say anything else would be a spoiler, but if you like complex, morally ambiguous fantasy, check this one out.

  • As Meat Loves Salt, by Maria McCan

This book follows a man named Jacob as he slowly falls in love with a fellow soldier during the seventeenth century English Revolution. After the war, they attempt to establish a utopian farming commune and keep their relationship together. This book is a really interesting foray into 17th century England, but it is ultimately a dark, passionate tale of obsession and vindication that will leave you as sick with the actions of the protagonist as he is with himself.

  • The People in the Trees, by Hanya Yanagihara

This book is written as a memoir of a disgraced scientist, who discovers a hidden tribe in a small Pacific island that he believes holds the key to a longer (and even immortal) life. You almost forget that the events of the book are fiction and not a real memoir–everything described seems meticulously researched and vividly real. As always, Yanagihara’s writing is gorgeous, absorbing, and well-paced. It’s a haunting tale of how science, hubris, and greed can lead to someone’s personal downfall, as well as colonialism and cultural genocide.

  • The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt

You might have already heard of this one, but I had to put it on the list anyway! After a traumatic accident kills Theo Decker’s mother, his life is thrown into turbulence and eventual crime, all stemming from a stolen painting. The story is tense, beautifully written, and will make you root for yet another morally gray narrator. For fans of dark thrillers, art history, homoerotic friendship, and/or coming-of-age stories, this one is for you.

  • Daytripper, by Fàbio Moon and Gabriel Bà

Although Daytripper is a graphic novel, it deserves a spot on this list. It follows Bràs, a Brazilian writer, and his journey through specific turning points in his life, each represented as a “death.” The art is gorgeous and the story flows impeccably, capturing the beautiful mundanities and joys of life. This book will leave you touched, inspired, and deeply affected.

  • The Vintner’s Luck, by Elizabeth Knox

After a vintner saves his life, an angel named Xas visits him every year for a single night. As the vintner grows, so does their relationship, just like a fine vintage. It’s difficult to say too much about the plot without spoiling the story, but I can say that this book explores the nuances of human relationships and the love we feel for each other, as well as the hate and fear that can pervade those relationships.

  • Beloved, by Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison is one of the greatest American novelists and Beloved is my favorite of her works. The book follows Sethe, an ex-slave, and her daughter Denver as they reckon with a ghost from Sethe’s past that begins to haunt them more literally than metaphorically. The story is both captivating and difficult to read, but Morrison’s writing is gorgeous and the characters come to life on the page. It superbly explores the depth of trauma and motherhood, as well as depicting the horrors of slavery in a way that doesn’t feel cartoonish or exploitative.

  • Everything I Never Told You, by Celeste Ng

Celeste Ng’s work has gotten a lot of hype recently, and for good reason. This book follows a family after the middle child, Lydia, drowns. We see the buildup to Lydia’s death and its brutal aftermath, as relationships are challenged within the family. It’s a brilliant look at familial dysfunction, generational curses, and interracial marriage in 1970s America, and a deeply haunting portrayal of how these issues can tear apart a family.

dark academia literary works: a masterlist

Hello! I replied to this post on Reddit today, trying to compile all the dark academia books I could think of, and then thought that maybe all of you here might find it useful too, so here you go. It is a very, very broad list, a mix of classic and contemporary literature, and there is no set criteria besides having a dark vibe (this includes murder and crime but could just be the way it’s written as well) and portraying an academic setting, most of the time from the student’s point of view. I haven’t read all of these myself and so I can’t judge on quality, but hopefully this will inspire people to add on to it in the comments.

Here you go!

The Lessons by Naomi Alderman Truly, Devious by Maureen Johnson The Secret History, Donna Tartt If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio Maurice by E. M. Forster The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde Possession by A.S. Byatt The Truants by Kate Weinberg The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark Vicious by V. E. Schwab The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater (tangentially related) A Little Life, Hanya Yanagihara Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro The Likeness by Tana French The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo (coming out tomorrow!) Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë The Lake of Dead Languages by Carol Goodman Oleanna by David Mamet Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides

Other classics that are not Dark Academia in content, but which I would include in a list of the DA canon: The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer Shakespeare’s plays (Macbeth, Hamlet are good ones to start with) A Separate Peace, John Knowles The Bacchae, Euripides Greek tragedies (a good one to start with is Antigone, very popular and staged many a time) Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman Beat generation literature Jane Austen’s books (light academia, anyone?)

Xiao: String of Fate [Soulmate AU] HCs

Hey anon! Okay, I’m just gonna level with you. This request? This request right here? Probably one of my favourites. I went feral over this at 3am and my monkey brain fabricated an entire life story for Xiao when he’s not even out yet.

I sorta combined this request with my feral plot idea (which is honestly a 20k word fic at this point), but ahem, I hope you like and np^^ gotta make so many offerings so Xiao hopefully blesses me. Have a lovely day anon!!

Xiao Semi Series

[Masterlist]

[taglist]  <- if you want to be added, please read this first.

Xiao: String of Fate [Soulmate AU] HCs

The red string of fate is a concept that those who are connected by a red string are destined to meet and fall in love. Regardless of place, time, or circumstances. The red string can never be broken unless one connected passes away.

genshin boys as romance drama tropes
diluc: hot ceo of a company and you're his secretary who's getting bossed around all the time and you hate his guts but oh nooooo you get drunk and sleep with him!
kaeya: the rebellious shady sibling of the hot ceo and he's actually just very misunderstood. he pulls you out of work to have make out sessions in the storage room.
razor: misunderstood feral delinquent who pets puppies whenever he comes across one and he actually has a really cute smile but y'all just haven't seen it. he comes to save you when some disgusting pervert tried hitting on you.
bennett: that one trope where the clumsy girl trips and falls on some guy and accidentally kisses him on the lips—except in this case, bennett is the clumsy one and you're the unfortunate(?) victim whose first kiss got stolen.
venti: that friend in college who always crashes at your apartment and treats it like his own home. then he actually moves in to live with you. a very typical roommates to lovers drama. with a lot of beer. and drunken confessions.
chongyun: you swear he hates you. he glares at you every time you see him, and he always turns away like nothing happened. sike! he actually likes you a damn lot, and he gets embarrassed when you catch him staring. he just has a resting bitch face, unfortunately.
xingqiu: the popular guy notices wallflower trope! he gets tired of acting like a perfect guy in front of everyone else, and his safe haven is the library. you're a sweet, shy bookworm and you bond by talking about books! he loves seeing you chatting excitedly about things you like. (he would def kiss you in public with a book covering your faces.)
zhongli: another hot ceo but this time you're poor and homeless so he offers you a job as a house caretaker in exchange for a room in his big ass mansion. but then you start to fall for him and- what? he has a fiancee abroad?? how come you didn't know that??? (rags to riches at its finest.)
childe: ENEMIES TO LOVERS FOR SURE. this mofo seems like he doesn't study at all but he tops the exams every single time. meanwhile, you're a very hardworking college student who studies 24/7 and you get second EVERY DAMN TIME. it's unfair. very unfair. he was out there partying on friday while you freaked over finals, how is he getting higher marks than you. it ends up as a one-sided rivalry and he wonders why you glare at him every time he waves hi at you. then one day at the library, he sees you struggling on a particular topic, and he offers to tutor you at his house. you think he's planning something bad but then you get to his house and- oh? he has younger siblings? and they're both cute??? and they're so fun to play with and they want to see you more????? and you get to see the nice brotherly side of him??? you start visiting his house regularly, BUT YOU SWEAR YOU VISIT FOR THE KIDS, NOT HIM, NO MA'AM- THAT LUNCH HE COOKED FOR YOU MIGHT BE THE TASTIEST THING YOU'VE EVER EATEN BUT YOU WON'T BE SWAYED- yeah ok you're making out on his couch now
xiao: the quiet kid in class everyone is scared of but all the girls are attracted to the 'mysterious' aspect to him. you don't really get the appeal until he offers to walk you home on a rainy day when you forget your umbrella, and buys you coffee when he notices you seem too sleepy in class, and then he brings you some medicine when you're sick and shares you his notes from the lectures you missed- ok FINE he's a lot nicer than he looks, but he's just a good friend, that doesn't mean you'll fall for him- ok shit he literally has the prettiest smile on earth AND YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT YOUR PERSONAL MISSION TO BRING A SMILE TO HIS FACE EVERYDAY-
albedo: that one smart guy in class you'd expect to have detailed notes but he refuses to lend them to anyone so no one really knows for sure. the reason? he actually has a crush on you and doodles your portrait in class on the same page with his notes whenever he feels bored and he doesn't want anyone to see them. one day, he conveniently drops his notebook in the hallway and you pick it up for him, but oh? what's this? is that a drawing of your... sleeping face?! you are beyond mortified and he freezes in place when he sees you with the notebook. no, you're not mortified ‘cause you're creeped out by the thought of him drawing you——you're only mortified because he stared at you while you unknowingly drooled on your desk. (you'd tell him you make a pretty damn horrible model and he should look for prettier people to draw, but he'd argue you're the prettiest person he knows.)
scaramouche: the cliche where everyone thinks he's a completely nice guy and you accidentally see him in his real nasty personality so he blackmails you into keeping his secret. but oh? what's this? you start liking him for who he really is?

edit (28/12/20): bennett's, chongyun's, xingqiu's and scaramouche's parts are added!

Anonymous asked:

Hello☆ i really like your way of writing so uh could you please do mute immortal reader x Xiao?♡

This was a bit harder than I thought it would be, which is why it took me longer to come up with a story. But Xiao is such a baby and I love writing scenarios with him. Thank you for requesting this, anon! And thank you so much for the compliment! 💕 Happy New year!

  Pairing: Xiao x gn!Reader

Style: One-shot; Angst

Word Count: 1139

Warnings: Mutism, Mentions of death

In a world where words meant too much, where people craved to speak up, where they wanted to hear others calling for them, Name felt like a complete stranger. For centuries. Being born into endless life without their own voice because of the curse thrown onto their family way before the Archon war was an immense struggle on its own. Everything they did, every action they made had to be thought through; otherwise, the rest of the deities judged and humiliated Name for their cursed state. An immortal deity who cannot speak should burn in eternal flames; those of a lesser being never belonged in our orders. Echoes of them saying those words carved into Name’s head ever since the day they were able to understand; since the day they realized others wanted them dead.

Maybe it would happen that way if they were not sent to Liyue to seek the protection of Morax, whose dominance was already established across the said land. Name’s family gambled with Name’s life sending them at that side of Teyvat as it was, but they did not want to lose their descendant to greed and spoiled morals. The only thing they could do at last was to wish for God of War to have mercy towards fragile being Name was. And their hopes were granted. Sensing the broken soul inside Name’s body, he took them under his wing, promising their family they will be safe. But there was one condition; they could never come back to Liyue and seek for Name again. In the end, as much as it hurt them, the contract was set, leaving Name to walk alone in the unknown.

treating you when you're sick

zhongli
  • The most doting man ever.
  • The moment he hears you're sick with the flu, he immediately pleads for you to go to bed. He's not panicking, actually he's quite calm in the whole ordeal, but there's a sense of urgency in his actions.
  • The hand placed on your burning forehead is cool, and you lean into his touch. He sighs while he checks your temperature, and he excuses your presence from work to take you home.
  • Zhongli doesn't pull his punches—when you tell him you're completely fine and you can manage to do at least a few commissions for the day, he instantly preaches it'd only make your flu worse. Facts fly out of his mouth and you couldn't find the opportunity to refute him, so you wound up taking a rest anyway.
  • He brews you some tea before tucking you into bed, telling you to be patient as he goes to purchase some medicine from a nearby pharmacy. He expects to see you not an inch away from the mattress—if he finds you back in your workplace, he wouldn't let you off with just a kind warning, so you wisely decided to obey him, but only for today.
  • When he comes back, he arrives with a few dishes he ordered from Xiangling. He carefully blows on the steaming soup before feeding you a spoonful. You're embarrassed to be treated like a child, but he laughs it off as he gives you another bite.
  • Speaking of being treated like a child... if your nose is runny, he doesn't hesitate from grabbing a tissue to assist you in blowing your nose. It's rather humiliating, but Zhongli isn't bothered in the slightest.
  • He's very attentive. If you show the faintest signs of discomfort, he'll quickly ask if you feel worse, or if you need anything else. His voice is as sweet as honey, though his eyes turn stern whenever you attempt to stand up, however.
  • If you have trouble falling asleep, he'll ask if you own a storybook. You're quite perplexed by his sudden question until he starts reading through it, no doubt using his ASMR voice to lull you into sleep.
  • “...I can't believe this is actually working,” you grumble as you grow drowsy. He hums in victory, placing down the novel on the table.
  • “Go ahead and rest,” he encourages, nothing but kind as he cups your cheek. You're all but unconscious at that point, and it truly is unfortunate you don't get to feel him kiss your forehead before you succumb to slumber.
xiao
  • Xiao is fully aware of how weak humans can truly be, but he can't help but scoff anyway when he finds you sneezing and shivering in the cold.
  • It had only taken you a shower of rain to fall ill—he ignores the concern bubbling up in his chest and exhales slowly.
  • “I told you to stay home yesterday, didn't I?” he prods, crossing his arms in nagging fashion. You fumble with your hands, avoiding his steely eyes. “I knew you'd get sick from the storm.”
  • “It was for work...” you weakly argue, and you can tell that wasn't the answer he wants to hear so you quickly add, “It couldn't be helped!”
  • His eyebrows crinkle together and he shoos you off to go to bed, ordering Verr to keep an eye on you. You pout at him, thinking he'd gone and ditched you for good, but you were too exhausted to deny the offer of a good sleep, so you gladly doze off on his bed.
  • Xiao doesn't really know how to take care of someone, so he tries his best, in his own ways.
  • He picks out fresh Qingxin flowers from stone peaks to brew some tea for your aching throat, remembering its medicinal properties from the book you gave him about herbs.
  • He buys a few candies you like when he passes by a confectionery shop, idly recalling how you disliked the bitter aftertaste of medicine.
  • He doesn't bother you when he finds you peacefully sleeping back at Wangshu Inn. Instead, he quietly nurses you back to health, deciding to wait until you woke up from your own volition to feed you your medication. He takes care of menial tasks like changing the wet rag placed on your forehead, and fetching you an extra blanket when he notices you shivering. He indulges in the comfortable silence as he clasps your hand.
  • Xiao's quite certain his presence wasn't necessary for your recovery, and you were already in stable condition, so he begins to stand up from his seat next to the bed, thinking it was just about time he made his rounds around Liyue to search for any potential trouble.
  • The faint squeeze of his hand stops him, and he turns back to see you looking at him blearily, eyelids still heavy from sleep. “You're leaving...?” you groggily ask.
  • He blinks at first, then his gaze softens. “I'm only off to get you a cup of water.”
  • He could spare ten more minutes. Probably.

If you feel like you’ve seen this alread, that’s normal. This list of recommendation has been previously posted on my first account @praestantias which has been deleted for some reasons. So here I am, reposting it.

Hating how elitist and eurocentric the dark academia community became, I would truly appreciate that you leave some recommendation of book written by people of color, for I noticed that I am guilty of the eurocentric part, but I am really want to educate myself and read more non-white books.

Thank you for your suggestions!
