I just want to tell you it your fault that I am now desperately searching for Danzo redemption /root shenanigans fics. You've ruined me for generic hur hur Danzo is deluded and evil lets kill him and have everything be fixed fics. Thank you, keep up the good work

I hope you don’t mind me answering this publicly because I’m just, so delighted. I wanna put this on my testimonials page, if I had one. all i ever hope for in life is to give other people the same difficulty with reading large swathes of Naruto fic. I am joyous in having passed on my curse, but also sympathize. welcome 2 the pit

and re: your other question about danzo fic recs (so you know I actually got it) it might take a couple days cause there’s... so very little but i’m seeing what I can scrape together!

funniest thing is when it turns out someone actually has exactly the same takes on a fictional character as me but they finish like 'so yeah that's why i detest this guy' and it's like. ah. i see. i am a fundamentally different person however

tbh my favorite thing about whatever naruto timeline you manage to glue together out of the scrap that exists is like. there are these little five minute periods of Oh, Maybe Everything Will Be All Right Actually. and then immediately something catastrophically bad happens. and you always know it, but the characters don't--at least the younger ones, but the older ones are wary, and older people from diff generations are wary in different ways, and it's such a fun bit of generational divide to play with and it lends every moment set in an Maybe It'll Be Okay period this backing track of tragedy that's always coming down the road and just 👌 it's so choice

thinking about minato and kushina forming baby friendship in my canon version bc it's just so funny to think about. like minato is a dirt poor orphan kid recently orphaned kid who's shy and awkward and extremely impressed by this loud-ass girl who beat up multiple people at school on her first day, and he's pretty sure she's a refugee or something? and he knows he heard she's an orphan, so he assumes they're on basically the same 'state awarded room and two bucks and some lint a week for food' level.

then he sees her lunch and it's actually pretty nice, and learns she lives with her sensei. that explains it! she's like, lower middle class? kushina does not elaborate on who her sensei is before asking minato to come over and hang that afternoon. minato's like sure! and after school they head off. minato's like oh this is the nicer part of town. oh this is the NICE part of town. um kushina why are we still going. kushina i have never even BEEN to this part of town the houses have been here since founding i think COUNCIL MEMBERS and AMBASSADORS live here what--and kushina's like oh yeah my sensei's on the council i think? so's his partner and i think kagami-san is an ambassador too. whatever that is

minato is hyperventilating. kushina has no level of normalcy established between being a kid hiding from genetic cleansing in Kiri and living with the closest thing Konoha has to old money and has no idea why he's freaking out. hang on we have to wait a sec for the security system--stop screaming, that's just one of my bodyguards. yes they've been here the whole time they're really good at hiding. anyway sakumo-san might be stopping by later for dinner, who's the white fang? idk he just stops by sometimes a lot of people do that. kagami-san's got a lot of friends. sensei, not so much. he's kind of lame. shinobi no yami? right i heard someone call him that once. he's still kind of lame

hey it’s ‘validate me on this character fic that’s possibly the longest damn thing i’ve written and has an actual outline and is taking forever jesus’ o’ clock

He fades into Kiri’s streets, shaving his distinctive hair close to his skull, aping the measured speech of the dockside workers. He learns secrets the old-fashioned way, at firesides and between choruses in the teams moving cargo that he slips into, and the new way; catching someone’s eye and threading their thoughts around his fingers, guiding them with a suggestion to the point he needs to reach. Unlike the common Sharingan, the answers are detailed; unlike Yamanaka method, he leaves no mark behind. It is a hard power to use sparingly. Occasionally, he omits an hour or two from the record he keeps for Danzo. But in the record he keeps for himself, he thinks of his father and marks down the full amount. He will know his own mind by whatever small means he can; it feels wrenching but satisfying, like visiting a long-neglected grave.
He sends back details of their training, which has turned overwhelmingly bloody. The obsession with persecuting and controlling bloodline clans. The executions, almost daily and always dramatic. He knows that little by little, the rumors of what Kiri has become will erase the Kiri that was, as the old Kirigakure ways seem to have already faded from most memories of its people. It is always convenient to have an enemy that provokes the fighters to righteous anger, but he can’t help his mild horror at the difference between the stories he heard, and the bloody reality he walks. Part of his mission is to find out, if he can, how the coup took place; but at lower levels of the village, nobody knows. He catches an old woman reminiscing, once, about the day the sky went twilight-dark in the middle of a sunny day, and the blood of every loyal retainer of the Third Mizukage stained the long steps down to the sea. He hears a girl whisper to her sister about how some said the Jinchuriki was always mad, but others say he was cursed. He seeks higher.

you should tell us all about your root ocs 🤠 i have so many as well, yet i still think i need to make more bc of how big and international the org’s supposed to be :O

resurrecting another ask so old I don't remember a ton of concepts, BUT luckily i have the old scraps of danzo-trains-naruto fic (which still lives in my head despite me never being able to write it yet) to go off and find at least a few Root OCs. it was really fun to remember all these guys, so thanks for that!

harumi - an older Root member, was a young woman when Danzo was middle-aged (she pops up in here, beneath my lungs to talk with Kagami). she's weird and socially anxious but in a way that makes her really good at translating people yelling at each other into polite-speak, so she her career for a while was mainly just carrying messages. She began working with Kagami on his diplomatic/ambassador missions shortly before Kagami's death; she was the only survivor of the Iwa attack that killed Kagami and everyone else on that mission, and it cost her a leg and some severe scarring. After a few months of bluescreening, she became essentially an etiquette teacher, training the members of Root that would have to interface with the public; and, notably, teaching Kushina proper behavior and diplomacy when Kushina was first brought to Konoha.

please do tell us how torifu was behind tobirama’s death...... the intrigue is haunting me

ok this is literally so old I forget most of the details but from what i recall. tobirama was getting weirder and more mad-scientist-y. torifu had REALLY taken his lessons about 'sometimes you need to do underhanded things to keep things running smoothly' to heart and was worried about how another war might push him over the edge to being unstoppably fucked up. he was also the member of the team who, atypically, was REALLY fucking good at genjutsu/mind manipulation (Kagami was good at fighting good and looking pretty. his sharingan skills were, while still cool as hell to the non-uchiha, pretty basic.) He managed to arrange for Tobirama to get reeeally into the idea of self-sacrifice and nudged him to tap Hiruzen, who Torifu thought was the safest choice, as next Hokage.

then hiruzen and danzo proceeded to make the village Worse together and both go 'i miss sensei's mad science bullshit :(' and fund orochimaru the moment he started committing interesting atrocities, so you know. they can't all be winning plots, torifu

Just wanted to say I love all the headcanons you churn out like a demented watermill, the shit is refined 👌😚 *chefs kiss*

I rarely return to this blog because it felt for a while like every time I made a new post some clown would try and pick a fight, but I appreciate that some people are still finding and appreciating my premier content. 😔 anyway torifu was behind tobirama's death, mikoto got the mangekyo sharingan after kushina's death and it contributed to the projected uchiha coup, and deidara is still a top no matter how many people have a problem with it

people: i wonder how kushina knew so much about sealing!

me, pointing at danzo, who was the right age to be taught by Mito and uses seals A Lot in canon and was around when kushina was training: consider

people: i mean she was just a tiny girl when she came to the village she must have been a super-genius or something!

me, pointing harder at danzo, who uses seals a lot in canon, and was the right age to be taught by Mito: C O N S I D E R

Me, staring pointedly at the fact Kushina was from Mito’s village, Uzushiogakure, where sealing was the primary jutsu style and that Kushina actually met Mito in person: Ah yes, she must have learned from Danzou

me, cheerfully indicating both the helpful button to make your own post, and the block button to avoid seeing posts you disagree with: it’s a free internet and some people enjoy thinking about different possibilities in stories, mate!

Iruka coughed. “No,” he said. The food had gone the wrong way.

“Oh.” Naruto always held his ramen like someone was going to take it from him. “Okay.”

“Naruto,” Iruka said. “I got this old thing way before then. I promise.”

“Okay.” Naruto stirred the broth, chasing a stray noodle. “I always wondered, is all. If it was me, I mean. The Nine Tails.”

“It wasn’t.” Iruka put down his chopsticks. He licked his lips, and then dabbed himself with a napkin. “It was, um. Mizuki.”

Naruto’s eyebrows furled. “Who?”

“Mizuki,” Iruka repeated. “Mizuki-sensei.“

“Oh. Oh! That guy.” Naruto frowned. “That’s right. You were friends.”

Iruka sighed. “Best friends.”

So I saw this post by @narutoheretic, and it inspired me to write this little thing.

~~~~~
Danzou was taught by Mito, and Tobirama, as much as he tried, was never able to quite let go of the Senju-Uchiha rivalry. Danzou doesn't hate the Uchiha clan, but Tobirama rubbed off on him, and he knows some of the things they're capable of. Kushina is amazing with seals, and he is so, so proud of her, just like Mito, he thinks, a natural, and a prodigy to boot, perhaps he's even her jonin sensei.
Kushina, as amazing as her chakra stores are, as amazing as her control is, and as amazing as she is with seals, is still young, is still growing, is still learning, every single day, and he knows it takes energy. He didn't have as much control as she did when he was her age, nor as much raw talent, he had to fight tooth and nail to be as good as he is now, and he remembers being exhausted to the point of passing out from just how hard he trained, he doesn't begrudge her for barely being able to walk, or to keep her eyes open, she's certainly fairing better than he did. So it isn't a hard decision to crouch down and let her climb onto his back, he doesn't quite care if he's seen as too soft, he knows he would have appreciated if Mito had done this for him, but she had never offered, and he had never asked.
He keeps walking, as Kushina rambles on about her theory for what she could have done better, and what she wants the seal to do, he listens attentively, she is so incredibly smart for someone with so little field experience, so it comes as a pleasant, if confusing, shock when as she's slowly trailing off into sleep, barely able to string a sentence together, that she says 'thank you Papa...' his heart skips a beat, and his eyes are so wide they're starting to water, and before he has time to think about it, he says 'you're welcome.'
When the day comes that Kushina goes into labor, he is happy for her, so, so happy, she's been looking forward to this day since the moment she found out she was pregnant, and he can't wait to meet the baby. So as the night stretches on, as the Kyuubi appears, as fires spread, and Kushina, nor Minato or baby appear, he remembers one of the things Tobirama told him, so long ago 'only a Mukuton user, or an Uchiha with a powerful Sharingan can control the Kyuubi.'
He knows, that while there is a single Mukuton user, the boy does not have enough control or knowledge to be able to do this, but there are plenty of Uchiha who have their Sharingan, and there are surely some who are powerful enough. He knows exactly which clan is behind this, and that distrust lent to him by Tobirama flourishes into a sickly hatred, it festers and twists his heart, because his daughter is now dead, and her son cursed to carry a beast that will try to control him, and in turn have others try to control him.
He will never forgive them, and he will ensure their punishment, no matter the cost.
