Y’ALL my sister just dropped a theory about Moana on me and I’m

Grandma Tala. She seemed like a fairly healthy old woman on the whole, right? Dancing with the sea and the rays, doing Old Crazy Lady things etc etc. Okay. Sure.

The thing is, my sister suddenly pointed out that, ever since Moana dropped it as a baby, Tala had possession of the Heart of Te Fiti. The source of Life.

And then she gave it to Moana, who ran off with it to try and get the islanders to voyage out for Maui, and… suddenly deteriorated. Died.

What if the Heart had been keeping her alive. Te Fiti gave Life to the islands, but in the hands of another, what if that isn’t what it does? What if the Heart grants immortality? What if Tala knew, and still gave up the Heart so that Moana could find Maui, restore Te Fiti, and save Motunui?

And if that’s what the power of the Heart really was, no wonder the monsters wanted it.

And that’s why Moana survived in places she should have died, INCLUDING venturing the realm of spirits aka the underworld

okay this is awesome, i love it. i was just thinking the other day about how like, why was it that maui stole the heart to give its power to humans, but then moana carries it all over the place and never displays any supernatural powers at all? it would be really cool if its power was just to keep people alive. like, that’s all the power you need, as a human: just being alive. and from there you can accomplish everything yourself.

also, moana didn’t even need maui’s powers, when push came to shove. this guy who pulled up the islands and pulled down the sun and could turn into a shark and everything, and the most important thing she took from him was just how to sail the open ocean. she only really needed a demigod to recover information that had passed from her people’s living memory: once she had it again, once she and the knowledge were alive together, she was unstoppable.

humans didn’t need te fiti’s powers. humans didn’t need maui’s powers. humans love and appreciate the gifts given to them by benevolent gods and heroes, but when it comes to taking care of business— and taking care of each other— just being alive is enough power for anyone.

just being alive is enough power for anyone.

whoa.

Seeing as tumblr seems to be pushing fandom off the platform, has there ever been any consideration of OTW or AO3 creating some kind of fandom community platform? I can't imagine how much time and money that would take, but I also can't think of an organization better suited to create a fandom community space.

Hi, folks!  We’ve been getting a lot of messages like this lately, so here’s the word.

Like you, we’re concerned about changes to Tumblr’s Terms of Service and how they will impact fandom. However, we also need to consider our ability to build and support new services, given that the OTW is an entirely volunteer-run, donation-supported organization.

There are no plans for the OTW to offer a social media site or forum. It would take a lot of resources that we don’t have, in terms of both the work and the hardware that would be required. And even if we had all the money and personnel we could want, it’s impossible to build a home for all online fannish activity on a single site, so some of fandom would be left out no matter what.

If you’re worried about the future of Tumblr, there are things you can do. It’s possible to export your blog so that you can save everything you’ve posted and reblogged.

It’s also possible to host text-based fanworks on AO3. If there’s a work you posted to Tumblr that you’d like to share on AO3, you can post it as a new work. (Tumblr posts don’t always work well with the importing feature, unfortunately.) AO3 can’t host images, video, or audio (yet), but if you host the files somewhere else, you can still share them on AO3.

If you’d prefer to save things exactly as they are, you can also save web pages on The Wayback Machine.

And don’t forget about Fanlore, the OTW’s fannish wiki! If there’s something you want to make sure is remembered–whether it’s a fanwork, a fest, a community, or something else–go ahead and add it. Fanlore is for all kinds of fannish history. If you’re new to editing, don’t worry. Check out the new visitor portal and tutorials for information about how to get started.

As always, thanks for your support. The OTW was founded to promote and preserve fanworks and fannish culture, and it will continue to do so regardless of what websites fandom may migrate to over time.

Tumblr is apparently doing some crazy nonsense again, so it seems like a good time to remind everyone that Pillowfort.io is a new social media platform that aims to give users control of their content and how it’s seen and shared, as well as provide better communication tools to promote conversation and creativity. If this sounds good to you, you can donate $5 to our PayPal and you will receive a registration link the Friday after your donation. And if you decide the site isn’t for you, you can request a refund for up to three weeks after you sign up. (All money we receive through this process is going towards paying our hosting expenses and compensating our programmers.)

Reblogging this in light of the recent news, since we’ve been getting a lot of questions from people looking to join. If you’ve sent us a payment since the 16th of November you will receive your invitation email shortly after the site returns, which will likely be tomorrow! If you want to purchase more than one registration link ($5 per link, so $15 for example would get you 3 registration links) you can give them to anyone you want– the ones you purchase are not tied to your account in any way.

Now, Pillowfort will not always require a payment to sign up; we are doing this because we are still in the process of implementing our subscription plan, which will be our source of long-term revenue, and these payments through PayPal give us funding to make sure we can pay all our server expenses, employee compensation, etc. while we are still working on implementing our business plan. Once we exit beta you will be able to join the site and use all of its essential features for free, with the option to pay for some extra goodies similar to what LiveJournal and DreamWidth offer in their subscription plans.

Welp, guess I’ll be spending a lot of time going through all the blogs I follow to find out where else I can follow people. Thanks tumblr. :/
