Then it must be her own blindness that keeps Lilith from noticing the      amount of smiles scampering across the vampire’s features. If she wanted to      be mawkish, the brunette would say that it were Ell’s eyes, that their colour      would distract and their brilliance take away her breath — what defined a si-      ren’s song vastly, however, was the clear intention of enjoying a non-recurring      pleasure. Ell was too fascinating to be wasted like that.

” — You must be kidding, really ? So you just ignored his babbling and      sucked him dry ? God, I’d have lost it. Probably cut out his tongue of vocal      chords. I really can’t stand it when they’re constantly talking. Sort of ruins      the mood.

Painfully disgusting would be her classification for mawkish gestures.        She'd rather not have that. Blame it on her decades of existing, or the lack of        significance that she perceives it to be, but what of the benefits in being overly-        sentimental? Nothing. Trivial as other subjects that society would often speak        of nowadays. It's abhorrent. The conversation they're having, even in its atrocious        lack of amusement is somewhat better.

" I like the way you think. But no, I didn't suck him dry either. I just drank him.        He offered, weirdly, so I took a sip. More than a sip but he didn't seem to mind. "        She shrugs. " Plus, he's something else. So, you'll never know when I might need        his help or something. Definitely not a vampire though. I'd know. "

With the lighter gone, it seemed like a weight had been lifted from her. The piece was delicate, a throwback from the thirties. No doubt Maman had kept the damned thing as a reminder of the years Carmilla missed, only to gift it along with her sickening smile upon her arrival at Silas. Letting go of it was easy. Ell never needed to know that.

The brunette shrugged, allowing herself the luxury of leaning back to perch against the edge of a low set wall behind her. “This age doesn’t understand many things. Being gross is one of them.” A quiet sigh passed her lips, her cool stare fixed on the other girl. “You could’ve told me you were undead and kicking decades ago.”

'This age'. Huh, who could have thought she would live to see this day? As dramatic as that sounded, she had always thought that she would die before knowing that fake boobs were a thing. Hunters weren't non-existent, that she knew of. One could say it wasn't exactly hard to escape from them. She was just disappointed that no one had tried harder. Ell didn't have a death wish, she was merely unimpressed with the world.

Carmilla made a point, and a very good one, but she didn't know. The taste of heartbreak still so bitter upon the tip of her tongue at that time. Of course, why would she meet her in such a state of emotion? So full of despair, anger, disappointment. It wasn't right; hence, she didn't. "Yeah but it's not like I could've found you without today's technology and that little investigative girlfriend of yours documenting every minute of her life. Also, I was busy visiting places."

It feels as though it has been a while since she’s seen      Ell smile like that — if she ever has. It’s nice in a way ; find-      ing someone who has a similar passion for blood even if it      comes from a different motive. Not that Lilith likes the vam-      pire more than necessary. She’s been there, done that.      Whatever they have needs to stay this way ; tiptoeing a-      round each other, playing games — without commitment. It      feels so much better, not being caged in.

“ Perhaps he was blinded by your hotness. Didn’t realise he      might be on the verge of dying.

The sincerity in most of what she does is        lost, and has been for a long, long time. Ell may        be a heartless machine, but she still smiles, even        if it's not in the same way that she used to do.        Nostalgia aside, the smile quickly turns into a smirk        upon hearing what the other has to say.

" No, he talked about young adult novels because        he knows what I am. Then went on to ramble about        inaccurate portrayals of supernatural creatures and        its effects for, like, 30 minutes. He wasn't even        affected by my previous threats and offenses. And,        he's not sexually interested. Pretty fucking weird.        At least his blood tastes nice. "

“ It’s still very rude. Not that she wholeheartedly minds —      a little folksiness here and there would have been nice of course,      but humans are ( thankfully ) made to survive even if there is a lack      of sociality. " Tell me ‘bout the idiots, then. You hopefully haven’t had      too much fun without me.

" Sorry to disappoint, " she says, a playful smile on        her face. Truth be told, she kind of misses her too. It's not        every day that she can meet someone who doesn't make        her want to stab them in the face. It's as if people like her        just pop up once every century. Then again, it's probably        because she just can't stand most people. " Wouldn't say        it's fun, but believe it or not an almost-victim ended up        conversing with me about how stupid young adult novels        are. You don't see that every day. Then again, the guy is        weird so I'm not surprised. "

The tendrils of smoke in the air were comforting, even coming from one of Ell’s cigarettes, in particular. A fleeting thought passed — a brief wondering of when she’d even taken up smoking in the first place, after they’d parted ways. It was useless information, false, stupid sentimentality. Carmilla shrugged, coolly. As if that would clear the place of this subtle awkwardness. Whatever. She’d had centuries to practice avoiding it. Ell, too.

“You’d think that threat would work, but evidently it doesn’t,” Carm mumbled. “Don’t think I haven’t tried. A girl can only take so much. But you’re not just here for a broken camera and a smoke, are you. You weren’t planning a sappy reunion —?”

It started ever since cigarettes were invented. They were simple enough to make her like them, despite the fact that she didn't have the chance to really experience them (in a human way). There were various things about them that was appealing to her. Self-absorption tends to make people look strange, often looking at nothing in particular, their attention obviously drifting away along with their complete awareness. She can smoke and not look like an idiot, amongst other things. It's nice.

"Gross. As if I haven't witnessed a lot of sappy moments throughout this lifetime. People nowadays can be really sappy, and that's saying something. I should carry a barf bag wherever I go. No, I just wanted to see you. Sorry to disappoint."

Her body glides over the couch’s back rest to land on      the vampire’s lap — and that with admirable concinnity.      “ It’s awfully rude to not call after a one-night bite. Th-      ought we had something special going on.

Image

She directs her attention to the other woman,      shoulders raising in a brief & nonchalant shrug. " What?      I've been busy. There are too many idiots here and I can't      just pass up that kind of opportunity. It's sad how some      people aren't even scared, though. Ruins the fun."

It would have been all too easy to deny it, to keep playing the lost undead soul forever without a sliver of positivity, but Laura had made it too difficult. Carmilla supposed a little bit of happiness was inevitable. Not deserved, by a long shot. Falling for the human embodiment of a ray of sunshine tended to have that effect.

“She is.” Carmilla squirmed, frown etched into arched brows, finally stuffing her empty hands into the back pockets of her ripped jeans. “Speaking of which, if she sees you she’ll flip. Maybe try recording some foolish sequel to the last documentary of doom. Or she’ll just freak. I’m not quite sure which is worse.”

The videos were okay. Not very entertaining. It was how she found out about Carmilla's location, which was good; and what she was doing; which was even better (or who, in this case). A long drag was taken, and she found herself struggling not to interrupt the other and say something discourteous.

She was squirming. Hah. What a nice thing to witness. Ell was pretty sure she had never seen her do that. If it weren't for the fact that it was Carmilla talking to her, she would have barfed a little in her mouth. The ravenette was happy at last, she didn't want to ruin it. "I'll break her camera if she does, so I'm giving you a forewarning."
