'Sheep in Wolf's clothing' by Judith Duffey 1986

I don't know if anyone on here is going to be interested I'm this piece or anything but I wanted to share as it struck me an an amazing piece of textile art

i think its so funny that alumni from schools like harvard and columbia that were there during the protests in the 60s-80s are expressing support for students currently protesting against the genocide in palestine, and random zionists that were NOT at these protests in the 60s-80s have the never ending audacity to tell these alumni "well thats different, what you protested was good and what they're protesting is bad." as if protesters against the vietnam war and apartheid south africa were not also demonized, arrested, brutalized, and even killed for their activism. history only remembers them fondly after the damage has already been done.

If you're having trouble keeping up with what's going on in Palestine because of US news coverage of university protests, here are some articles you can read and a video you can watch:

While CNN & all the other mainstream media try to paint the university protests as "pro terrorism" (which they're not, they're literally anti-war protests.) Palestinians are being slaughtered by the minute.

Please don't stop speaking about Palestine.

y'all love you some cultural relativism but when someone brings up that zionism is a direct reaction to existential, centuries-old, post-genocide fear suddenly you couldn’t possibly bring yourself to empathize with a bunch of jews..israel exploits the diaspora for capital and human resources every day bc it’s ruled by fear but there they go victimizing themselves again, those jews

maybe ur local synagogue wouldn’t be selling israel bonds like the state’s cash cow if a psychological dependence on the state hadn’t been fostered in the first place based on real threats and dehumanization outside the community

So is this saying Zionism is bad or good?

its actually assessing this exact mentality non jewish leftists have that leads them to demonize diasporic jews bc of the (bad!) actions of a state formed in our name.

israel bad. jews not complicit by default. eradicating antisemitism will eradicate zionism. thats the post

given that this is apparently findable i want to clarify that i wrote this in like 2016. i think on a long-term basis, what i said remains true, though if i were to write it today i would be much angrier and less gracious toward the parts of the diaspora that prioritize their own victimhood over standing up against an active genocide. i even understand why non-jewish leftists might be getting aggressive toward us (though i think it's misplaced) in response to the abhorrent, selfish way jewish leaders and community members have behaved.

i ALSO think that because people are literally dying and suffering at this very moment, shock and aggression are necessary tools and awareness/action are more important than catering to jewish fear.

mostly what i would change about what i said then is that the onus IS on US (JEWS) to address these things about our community. i care less about being "attacked" by non-jews because frankly these issues are no longer part of an intracommunity discussion. we have to acknowledge how we got here and lead those conversations before we start to get pissy about others doing it for us.

It's that time of year when Tumblr celebrates Easter by posting pictures of crucified anime characters, and inevitably somebody in the notes will pop up to helpfully explain that crucifixion imagery has no cultural significance in Japanese media because Japan is only about 1% Christian, which bugs me because it's completely wrong.

It's true that in the majority of cases, crucifixion in Japanese cartoons isn't meant to be conveying any specific theological message, but something Western audiences are likely to miss is that a large portion of those random crucifixion scenes are referencing Ultraman.

Ultraman's creator was a devout Roman Catholic who explicitly intended the titular hero to read as a Christ figure, and consequently, various Ultramen have been crucified on multiple unconnected occasions throughout the franchise's history. Crucifixion scenes in Japanese cartoons are often directly name-checking particular crucifixion incidents from Ultraman, right down to emulating the compositions and camera angles of specific shots. It's like an especially morbid version of the Akira slide.

The upshot is that while it's true that the inclusion of gratuitous crucifixion scenes in Japanese cartoons typically has no (intentional) theological message, stating that they have no cultural significance is incorrect. A large chunk of the Japanese viewing audience are going to see them and immediately go "hey, that's an Ultraman reference".

Anyway, as an image tax, have a shot of four crucified Ultramen miraculously resurrecting a fifth Ultraman by shooting laser beams out of their hearts:

Some guy on Twitter had his wife go to the Columbia protests with a shirt that had “JEW” written on it in big letters and the video was the biggest flop bc he kept having to turn the camera around so that signs like “JEWS FOR A FREE PALESTINE” wouldn’t be in the shot.
