Come, talk to me, please!

Well my week has been exciting so far.

I had some other work to do this morning (Figuring out some algae stuff involving 1000 L mesocosm up a mountain) so mystery species has been sitting alone in the lab all morning…..

Made it up to the lab today to find this. It’s probably from the fridge defrosting and not the creepy “algae”.

June 13th Update.

According to a few colleagues it’s either a plant, an algae, or a fungi. So that’s been helpful.

After a day with some sunlight I think I might be seeing some chloroplasts.

It seems to like the nutrient solution I added yesterday though!

I for one welcome our new plant, algae, or fungi overlords.

I was about to say “in a sensible lab people wouldn’t waste time with this, they’d autoclave the bottles and move on” but on reflection I can’t think of a single bio lab I’ve been in that wouldn’t immediately go “ooh, mystery algae, that sounds like a fun challenge; let’s devote multiple hours to identifying it for no reason”.

I need updates tell me about the algae

The mystery algae/plant/fungi/alien is stuck in the university growth chamber. With everything going on I probably won’t get to check in on it until September, possibly not until 2021.

So by that time it will have developed what, writing?

God I hope so, then I can train it to write my thesis!

This entire post is the most on-brand biologist thing I have seen in my entire godforsaken life. The moment this pandemic is over these guys have another crisis ready for us.

Can we get an update cause this is crazy

Update: Due to the global pandemic, the algae has been left alone in a weird hidden growth chamber for a year and will likely stay there for another year. Enjoy that information!

Friday, August 13th, 2021: Yesterday I visited the algae. Today I am going to bring a preserved sample home.

I’m going to be in the field for the next 2 or 3 weeks but soon after that I hope to once again try to ID it.

Any botanists/mycologists who want to help out? I’m afraid if it’s not algae my ID skills are very rusty.

Here it is, in all it’s glory, after 2 years in isolation.

This is about Sci-Hub. yeah we get it.. gatekeep knowledge and protect the interests of capital…

Listen, this is serious.

Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!

It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.

Like, it’s literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.

So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?

Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.

Oh, and while we’re talking about books, if you’ve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely don’t go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately they’re completely free.

nooo don’t use sites that make academic papers accessible to everyone, why would you do such a terrible thing

oh and in case none of those HORRIBLE sites dont have the article you need, DON’T email the author of the paper. They aren’t paid by the publishing company, and will give you the paper for FREE. HOW HORRIBLE

okay TELL ME SOME OF YOU HAVE SEEN THIS VIDEO PLEASE NOT THE “HATECRIMED HIS ENTIRE FAMILY TO DEATH AND THEN WE SEXUALIZE HIS SADNESS“

Holy crap.

This is the most accurate breakdown of Teen Wolf I’ve ever seen. Also Hilarious.

“YOU FUCKED UP A PERFECTLY GOOD HIMBO. LOOK AT HIM, HE’S GOT PTSD.”

This is so perfect it made me cringe to oblivion.

Man, when I was like 16 I got so sick of being made fun of for being the fat kid that I took an axe down inna woods, chopped down a tree, and started doing log-lifts all the time. I got strong as fuck, but I didn’t lose no weight. I actually got bigger.

Same thing happened when I got into fighting. I got even stronger, and I got *fast*, man, and nimble, like a cat. Still chubby.

Body-building culture is a bunch of crap, my dude. Functional muscle is not necessarily toned or lean. You can be swole as hell and still be heavy. And that’s cool.

Embrace your inner barbarian. And when fatphobic little gym twinks try to body shame you, you should DESTROY THEM with your MIGHTY AXE

Can comfirm, i am Quite Fat ™ but i still hit my punching bag hard enough last week make it touch the ceiling and broke a finger in the process

You know, I train with (martial arts) a bunch of dudes, and a few bodybuilders have showed up over the years.

And every damn one of those huge shredded motherfuckers has the endurance of a fucking newborn puppy. Fifteen minutes into warmups and they’re panting for air like like they’re about to die. I’ve sparred them and every one of them telegraphs their moves about two weeks in advance, and are slower than my dead grandpa because their huge useless muscles get in the damn way.

Now. I also work with a couple of guys who are not weightlifters. They do, however, do very physical jobs and are Big Dudes. Picture this sort of build.

No abs to speak of, a bit of a tummy, and those motherfuckers can pick up one of the weightlifters and throw them.

And they’re fast. Like, unfair fast.

Bodybuilding culture is bullshit. Embrace your status as a giant barbarian and if anyone gives you crap throw them off a mountain.

Bodybuilding is doing training that enlarges muscles, not strengthens them. Bodybuilding is eating food that supports muscle growth and limits water intake, to line out all those muscles. It’s a visual beauty goal.

Actually going for muscle improvement means you train to make the muscles strong, no matter how they look. It means you eat food that have a good energy intake so you don’t collapse, you have enough water since you might sweat like a pig. Plus, fat not only offers emergency energy, it is also PADDING to avoid getting HURT if you do any sort of fighting.

The ACTUAL strongest men (in weightlifting in this case) in the world? All look like this

Like, if anyone ever calls a fat person unhealthy, gently point them towards the amazing photo series “The Body Shapes of the World’s Best Athletes” cause that gives a great reality check about size, muscle visibility, weight and such

Inktober 2020 - Day 1 - Fish

So it’s October again. I try to draw every prompt again this year and even finish last year ones… maybe. m a y b e . I wanted to make it thematic - using my OCs -  but I just cound’t fit all into one of my work/world/story. So there will be recurring characters sometimes, but as always I just try to wing it. Wish me luck ;)

But for the first day I choose something totally different. Actually I’d like to dedicate this one to  @ritarmandi and @nosetothewind94 since reading this prompt just automatically reminded me to our dear Cousin Mordecai from the ingenious card game Gloom.
