I would hate being Kaidan and Ashley in me2 especially after the whole Horizon thing because you know everyone is coming to them like “ hey uh … when me and my team got deployed … um …. We saw Shepard … yeah it was crazy … “ like how many newer soilders tried to report to them that they saw their old and supposed dead Commander Shepard doing a booze run important mission on Omega And they have to grit their teeth and go “ Don’ t concern yourself with that . “

So a post yesterday got me thinking abt the citadel coup and I really like the subtle differences in Kaidan and Ashley's dialogue if shepard manages to convince them to stand down.

Kaidan will say "I better not regret this" effectively putting the blame on Shepard if they betray him, almost like a warning to then (as he should btw)

And Ashley says "I'm gonna regret this" which tells me she'll blame herself if anything happens, also shows her more cynical view of the world (the thought of her kicking herself for being vulnerable if smth did happen ugh)

Either way Shepard's "you won't" and face of relief always kills me

It was pointed out by Allegra Clark (ironically a Kaidan Hater) that the VS is essentially written for the opposite gender playerbase. Ashley's apology letter is just that an apology. She's apologizing for yelling at the male player on Horizon and blowing up at them before they can explain. On the other hand Kaidan's letter talks about his struggle to move on and how Shepard actually being alive has brought the past back up again. Allegra frames it as Kaidan blaming Shepard for returning and "guilt tripping" her by mentioning a date he went on but I can see the difference since for the first two games their romance is M/F only.

I see it and these differences in their lines as the culmination of their characters. Ashley has always had confidence issues. She's used to things blowing up in her fsce when she trusts herself so "I'm gonna regret this" is one last burst of "I trust myself but the universe will screw me over anyway" while Kaidan is trusting Shepard and being vulnerable which leaves him open to be hurt because he isn't protrcting himself, someone else is.

It's so refreshing that even thought they both must play one role after Virmire, they both have their psrsonalities intact and aren't just on rails to say the exact same thing their counterpart would.

A Squad Inside Joke is born.

EDI was of course in on the joke the whole time and helping Ash/Shep coordinate what armors to wear. Kaidan caught on when he realized EDI was always matching him too. So the next time Shep and Ash chose to go out in catsuits, Kaidan was prepared... and tbh he kinda ate them up.

It’s the 14th around here, so…
