First Event of #GowanusGames: The Battle of Brooklyn!

The concept was inspired by the first battle of the Revolutionary War which was fought on the shores of the Gowanus Canal, known as the Battle of Long Island (represent!). General Washington had brought his troops into Brooklyn to face the oncoming warships of the British Empire but had to retreat back across the East River and into Manhattan.

So we take the contestants and put them into the Gowanus Ballroom, a warehouse/art space by the Smith & 9th Street stop, where they’ll have to run to the far side to collect a flag, while our early-arriving crowd can shoot them down with tennis balls, before they have to face the on-coming cannonballs (or in our case, bowling balls with revved up ball returns from newly closed Maple Lanes in Bensonhurst). Once they have one of the ten flags from the ship, they have to hold onto said flags until they make it back across the court and over the starting line.

BEWARE: Not all contestants will be playing fair, but other than keeping the fights and powers on the field, there are no rules!

POWER PLAY is the comic project I worked on with fellow TenTonStudios Founder & Marvel Artist, Reilly Brown, which led to the foundation of KINGS COUNTY COMICS! Click below for a preview of the NYC Comic Series!!

From the heart of NYC comes the original digital comic book series POWER PLAY, co-created by Marvel artist Reilly Brown & writer Kurt Christenson.

Presenting the first ComiXology comic to refine what has now become known as Guided View Native Digital Comics, a series that utilizes the technology developed to read comic books on your smartphone, tablet, or web browser, while maximizing the story-telling potential of this new medium.

Power Play is about New Yorkers with superpowers, but rather than fight crime, they don makeshift costumes and form an underground streetgames league. From all across the Five Boroughs, competitors come for a chance to claim the League Cup, for fortune, glory, or for the free year of beer at their neighborhood dive bar.

Power Play is a love letter to the diversity of New York City with each character satirizing the stereotypes of the locals, with a wink & a nod to their various neighborhoods. The scenes in the comic are MADEinNY, drawn from photo reference of actual New York locations, monuments, bars, etc. so that you can experience the city first hand, building on those of us who know it well, and introducing it to those who’ve yet to visit.

Drawing inspiration from early Spider-Man, Archie Comics, & Sports Manga, Reilly and Kurt have created a new, accessible, fun comic book story that’s a fresh take on superpowers, mixed with the obstacle courses that only the Greatest City in the World can provide!

There is a FREE preview on our Facebook Fanpage as well as on the number one digital comics provider, comixology at:

ComiXology Protip: Add our webstore to your iPad and iPhone desktop!

If you navigate to comixology.com in Safari on your iPhone or iPad, you can save a shortcut to your desktop for greater ease-of-use. Just hit the button that looks like a square with an arrow pointing up, then choose “Add To Home Screen.” Save this new shortcut next to your new comiXology app. We’ve made the store logo orange so you can tell the two apart easier.

Shopping via the webstore gives you the added benefit of being able to add multiple items to the cart before checkout as well as including content previously unavailable in the iPhone and iPad app.

After you make a new purchase your comics can be found under the “Recently Purchased” section in the new comiXology app.

One last thing, we’ve recently optimized the webstore for mobile shopping. So check it out! It’s pretty slick.

GeeksUnleashed.Me Indie Spotlight:

Reilly Brown on Power Play
Geeks Unleashed: What made you chose Digital Comics exclusively over publishing the comic?
Reilly: Honestly, when I first read some digital comics on my computer screen, I wasn’t really into them because most comics distributed digitally are still obviously made with print in mind.  I’d read comics on my computer screen, but the image files weren’t made to fit the screen dimensions, I’d have to scroll back and forth to see the whole thing, and it just seemed like the medium was fighting against it’s own presentation too much to be enjoyable.
It seemed short sighted to me.
Then when I saw how ComiXology was authoring it’s comics to create an excellent reading experience on a handheld device, even though they were working with material that was made for print, it read really well, and I saw that and thought “hmmm, I bet if I made something that was designed to be read digitally this way I could do something REALLY cool…”
Also it’s great to dive into a new evolution of the comics art form that very few other people have jumped on yet.  It gives me a chance to play around and discover things before anyone else has written the rules for me.  It’s a chance to be a pioneer, and chances like that don’t come around very often.

Seriously, he blew off a meeting with me about Sunday’s event, and now nobody knows where he’s at, and I need to start promoting these live events and he’s just going to bail on me? Everyone knows he’s the star, maybe it got to him…

Yo, if you see Pete tell him he better make it February 11th, it’s a Tuesday Night, and he’s due to perform! If he wants to make this album a reality he’s gotta get it together and quit slacking!

Hopefully you can hang with the star of the GOWANUS GAMES himself, Gowanus Pete

To check out the comic book POWER PLAY they made about him head over to comixology!

A show about comics and other mediums from literature to props for theater, film, set design, sculpture, poetry, performance art, puppets, bands, video, nail polishing, street art, animation, graphic design, burlesque, origami and more. This exhibition intends to show the blurred division between comics and other artforms with cartoonists who use their skills beyond traditional comic book pages or artists from other mediums producing work related to comics.

MADEinNY: UNION SQUARE & the QUEENSBORO BRIDGE!

An early decision by Reilly and myself was that if we were going to develop a comic together it would have to take place in NYC. There are just so many cool spots, rooftops, dive bars, random sculptures, street art, etc. all over the five boroughs, so why not showcase them? Why not create some fun superpowered twenty-somethings to run amok through these streets?

All the locations in Power Play will be actual places you can visit yourself. (Though no guarantee that it’ll look exactly the same, NYC is always changing!!) Here are two locations you can see in our FREE PREVIEW!

Up above we have Union Square, a hub of activity and probably the most useful subway station in the city. It also features one of my favorite and unusual pieces of public art in the city, the Metronome, by Kristin Jones & Andrew Ginzel, installed in 1999.

Then we’ve got the opening action scene in the series which takes place on the Queensboro Bridge, or the 59th Street Bridge as it’s sometimes called. Linking Queens and Manhattan, it’s a bridge that doesn’t get as much attention as the other bridges but it has a great view and sports the Roosevelt Island Tramway. You may’ve seen it featured in such films as Woody Allen’s Manhattan, John Carpenter’s Escape From NY, and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

The first issue has even more spots from NYC, and the future of the series will see the characters fighting one another everywhere from Brooklyn to the Bronx.

What’s your favorite location in NYC?
