i just found out tumblr was storing over three GIGABYTES of cookies on my device without me knowing and that's why it's been running so fucking slow recently... incredible. anyways everyone go clear your fucking cookies. don't let this website run a goddamn video game's worth of disc space in the background for no good reason.
on firefox: settings → search "cookies" → scroll down → "manage cookies" → tumblr should be at the very top because of how much space it's taking → select it → clear cookies → save changes. done
i've had a problem for a week or two where tumblr would just hang for like 20 seconds on load and profiles looked like it was reading a database. went and checked. 2.4GB of cookies. you are correct. good job. holy shit what is wrong with this website.

I've seen Death depicted as a card dealer or other sort of gambler, a guy in a suit, a farmer, a robed apparition, and any other number of things, but this? This has to be the best Death I've seen yet. An old seductress saying "hey kid, don't you wanna die in a trench for a government that doesn't give a fuck about you, just like your dear old dad?" This goes hard as fuck.

one time in undergrad we went to this big farm & greenhouse where they were cultivating rare & endangered plants and during the tour the botanist let us all taste a leaf off of a particular plant & I was like oh some of these are edible!
so we got to the next plant and when he took questions I asked if it was also edible and he said “I mean. It’s not poisonous, but I’m sure it won’t taste good.” I asked if I could try it anyway and it seemed like he was just perplexed enough to indulge me so he gave me one leaf. It was terrible.
At the next plant he offered me a leaf before I asked and he wanted to know what it tasted like
For the rest of the tour he gave me a leaf from each non-poisonous plant and I told him how they all tasted (mostly like nothing at all but some unspeakably terrible) and that’s how I ate several dozen rare & endangered leaves.
So anyway. I’m a fan of this blonde guy already. I think we’d be friends

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:
These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:
But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.
Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.
If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.
Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.

Gentle but sincere urging to get an account, for those of you who haven't! AO3 is not a social media site that's free to use because it's harvesting your data for resale and spamming you with ads: it's a nonprofit that's free to use because people give generously at its completely voluntary and infrequent donation drives (which consist solely of a single text banner that can be dismissed if you're logged in).
Members also get emailed when their fav fics update, which is worth an account in and of itself.
Also the majority of my works are now locked to non-users, so if you like my fics, you'll like them even more when you can actually, you know, read them.
I think Columbo is the only good contemporary detective serial for a lot of reasons but mostly because you never really see a weird little gremlin man who causes problems on purpose and annoys rich people into accidentally confessing to murder anymore
Shows like Dragnet and Law & Order et al are unconscionable pro-police propaganda. Columbo is pro-"weird guy who's just sort of here" propaganda
I don't think he ever actually joined the police force I think he just showed up one day and wouldn't leave
I think it works out because Columbo is only a cop because that’s the quickest and easiest way to explain why he’s always showing up at crime scenes. He doesn’t carry a gun, his dog is absolutely not a police dog, he has no partner, and he seemingly never tackles a case unless it’s a rich person who has committed a murder. We learn nearly nothing about the police force or other cops on the show. Even in the episode where he’s solving a murder committed by a police commissioner, it barely comes up. He has more in common with with the ‘faerie disguised as humble beggar’ trope than with ‘good guy cop’ trope. I would absolutely believe it if it turned out that he was literally some kind of supernatural being, and he uses his limited magical abilities to convince everyone that he’s a detective for the sake of convenience and that’s about it.

It works because Columbo goes after the only category of person more aggravating than cops, which is rich people

This is the same logic as “be gay do crimes” because if something out of your control, like your sexuality, makes you a criminal, then you’re already a criminal, why are you obeying the law? What do you have to gain from it?
We have human rights so we don’t have to fight, steal or kill for the basics. It seems like the people in charge have forgotten how the world used to work.
