My name is Terhys Persad and I run a web series about travel and art called Where Art Thou. This is the first of a 6 episode season with Buhlebezwe Siwani. I focus on artists who don't get much attention in traditional art spaces, so a lot of the artists are women or gender non-conforming people, people of color, and/or queer. I also hire crew along the same lines. All of my crew in South Africa were POC and most of them were women. I avoid travel narratives that are done to death in western travel shows; you won't find any talk of safaris, Mandela, or wine in the South Africa season; the goal is to introduce outsiders to a part of a country's culture that doesn't feed into stereotypes.

A very violent act of misogyny took place in Guatemala, and unfortunately, the girls are still not safe. The surviving girls were sent to another facilities, and their families still want absolutely no contact with them. Hate against women and girls can lead death, which is why it’s important to tackle the issues of misogyny.

Orphan outreach is a donation organization dedicated to helping the victims. You can donate here.

no one cares what men think

For a group whose opinions are irrelevant, men sure like to talk a lot

13.6 of men say they would rape a woman

Who the fuck keeps asking these men what they think?

13.6 OF MEN SAY THEY WOULD RAPE A WOMAN

These statistics never really make much sense to me because how would they know that 13.6% of men would rape a woman? Did they ask all the men?

Princess of R&B” was born in Brooklyn NY and was an American singer, dancer, actress and model. She was raised in Detroit, Michigan and first appeared on TV when she was only 10 years old. When she was 12, she’d already signed with Jive Records.

Aaliyah’s debut album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number sold three million copies in the US and became double platinum by RIAA. For her second album One in a Million, she worked with Timbaland and Missy Elliott that also sold 3 million copies in the US and 8 million worldwide.

She earned Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocalist after writing the single “Try Again” for Romeo Must Die in which she also appeared as an actress.

She died in a plane crash with 8 other people who were coming back from the Bahamas after filming the music video for the single “Rock the Boat”. The tests revealed that the pilot had traces of cocaine in his blood.

Aaliyah was called “Queen of Urban Pop” as she is listed by Billboard as the tenth most successful female R&B artist of the past 25 years and 27th most successful R&B artist in history.

Rest In Peace Legend.

Bayard Rustin was an openly gay Black man who was Martin Luther King’s right hand man. He planned the Million Man March and was subject to scrutiny for his sexuality and deemed a “deviant” and “pervert”.

Bayard Rustin can be found in nearly every picture of MLK yet he has undoubtedly been erased from history. We have to fix that.

Well then, let’s bring that name back.

Bayard Rustin, openly gay, human rights activist, proud black man.

(the guy on the left in case you wondered)

Yeah he was literally the guy who was the head of planning the March on Washington.

If you want to learn more about him, there’s a great documentary on him called Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin

I aspire to be like these girls’ mothers. Can you imagine having a child so bright, realizing it, and then giving them the resources and platform to use their gifts? So many children are this talented and we will never know about them because of lack of support or funding.

The American Negro Ballet Company formed in 1934 under the direction of Eugene Von Grona.  Von Grona, an immigrant from Germany wanted to blend traditional ballet with the cultural and musical traditions of Harlem.

Sadly, the American Negro Ballet Company was short-lived, barely lasting a year after a poorly reviewed debut performance in 1937.  The company did, however, inspire other choreographers.  Years later, the First Negro Classic Ballet premiered in Los Angeles, and the New York Negro Ballet opened in 1954 and toured internationally.
