I've updated my Spiritualism galleries online, 2001 - 2013. This image is from a recent visit with the great medium Sharon Harvey.
One Picture / One Paragraph Feature on Mark Alice Durant's Saint Lucy site
I was excited to discover this Smoke Painting by Wolfgang Palen in the Drawing Surrealism show currently up at the Morgan Library. Smoke painting is an old Spiritualist technique for visualizing messages. I've done many smoke experiments with friends in Lily Dale but mine never came out this beautiful.
Research for my Kirlian Photography Event @ Observatory on January 11 led me to David Bowie
In the 1890's the playwright August Strindberg made camera-less images he titled Celestographs. He exposed the coated photographic plates at night by leaving them out under the starry sky. Their similarity to the NASA Hubble images is uncanny.
I photographed Susannah Cahalan for The November issue of Reader's Digest. Tonight at Observatory I will host an event for her totally amazing book Brain on Fire with Carl Schoonover. See his TED talk here.
On a recent trip to Scotland I learned about the amazingly strange story of St. Kilda and was haunted by the documentary images made there by Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson. Here's a link to his beautiful magic lantern photographs. Still hoping to find a good link to his black and white work. Coincidentally, I was happy to spot a piece of his in the current show at the Met.
One of my favorite things in the world are photographs of Sun Ra. I was very excited to discover this collection today
