So this has been bugging me lately...

enough to come out of tumblr hibernation anyway

can people please stop saying ‘desi’ when what they really mean is Indian/South Asian?

Identify yourself whichever way you want, but please, don’t use it as a blanket term for every South Asian or every Indian. We don’t all speak Hindi, and given how common it is for people who do live in Hindi-speaking regions to make fun of/stereotype our languages and culture, excuse me when I feel a little disgusted to find seemingly enlightened, well-meaning people using a word from that very language as the ‘correct’ way to identify us all.

Language is hugely linked to ethnicity and heritage in India, so while I speak fluent Hindi because it’s a language a lot of people around me spoke, it’s not ‘my’ language no matter how many Bollywood movies I watch, and the idea of my very much non-Hindi-speaker/non-North Indian self being called a ‘desi’ and being expected to be ok with it... is not going to work.

so yeah, I’m not ‘desi’. But I am most definitely Indian, and proud of it. I’m done here.

The two years Chan-young is in the army are the two worst years of Bo-na’s life. She sends him a package every week, filled with his favorite sweets and snacks, and she always makes sure there is enough for him to share with his entire squadron.

(She’s heard plenty of horror stories from her older brother about the army, and if bribery means that everyone will treat Chan-young well, she will bribe the entire base with sugar and saturated fat and salt until they are all soft and flabby again.

Not that Chan-young was ever flabby. But part of him has always been soft—the way he watches her, his hands sliding over her hips, his lips against her neck—and she hopes the army won’t take that from him.)

He writes back every week to thank her, to assure her that he’s doing well, to remind her that he loves her, and to share only the good stories so she doesn’t worry about him.

Bo-na still worries, though, so she visits his father once a month to hear what the bad stories are. Every time she appears at his home for more of the truth, Yoon Jae-ho lets her in. He only reminds her once per visit that he is not her father-in-law.

(Not yet.)

Furlough days are wonderful and terrible. Wonderful because Chan-young always splits those equally between his father and her (and Jae-ho never says a word about the fact that his son doesn’t sleep at home), and terrible because each used day is a day she can’t see him later in the year (and his hair is too short for her to grip when they kiss).

She writes I love you more during those two years than she has ever said it aloud in her life, but at least she always hears Chan-young’s voice in her head when he writes back I love you, too.

Best canon couple ever, no contest (and she WOULD totally be like this, too). I hope it's not too intrusive to say I wish you could post this on a fanfic site like archoveofourown or fanfiction. net? Because tumblr isn't always the best when it comes to fic, or fic accessibility.

Basically my response to strong feelings is to write. I got my feelings hurt by the internet today simply because I expressed how much I like the chemistry between Young-Do and Rachel in Heirs. (Two Anons called me stupid! I lost three followers.) So I ficced them hard. I might fic them more. :P

Rachel looked up at the mirror to see Young-Do standing behind her. She rolled her eyes and went back to cleaning her dress. She’d already washed her face clean of the drink thrown at her but hadn’t gotten to fixing her makeup. Both cheeks were still bright pink.

"This is the girls’ room. Out."
