Look at me. Do I look worried?

[ stare ] your muse staring mine down ~ Lori (hellprevention101) ~ at the quarry, before Rick returns

That look. All too familiar now, and Shane meets it evenly, brows raised without a word.  Isn’t much of a standoff though - four, maybe five seconds pass before his chin drops towards his chest, eyes once again on the length of rope passing between his fingers. It will have weaved itself in and out of several knots before this conversation is over.

Still, he isn’t wavering, and only offers quietly, “Say I send a group out to put those signs up. Say we lose one, maybe two. Bad enough. Then what if all these signs we’re puttin’ up start attracting people who aren’t just lookin’ for a safe place to sleep? It’s twice a risk.”

There, closer, she finally had his full attention, the distraction stilling in his hands when she reached for it. Dark eyes met hers first, flicked over once to the group, then back again. With the exception of the last two in their pack - a pair of brothers who looked like they’d been filthy and rough long before shit ever went downhill - this group patched together from the highway a few at a time. They all listened to him, seemingly without question. Easier that way. Better for all of them.
Not the reason for staying though. Not entirely. “We could make it on our own. You know I’d take care of you and Carl, no matter what. Once everybody started comin’ together, I just thought maybe it would be better for you two to have other people around like this. Might make you feel safer.”
Shane’s hand shift slightly, just enough to brush his fingers against hers. “You wanna go, you say the word. We’re gone.”

Shane usually knew the best course of action, and his decisions were grounded in reason, even if the truth was hard to take. Being able to talk to the others in camp and create a semblance of their lives before this had made some small difference. Having the other women to talk to helped to keep her from losing her mind. Shane kept them safe, but the others did help her maintain her sanity.

She was torn between wanting to save everyone and wanting to cut their losses now. Rick would have put out the signs on the road and taken in everyone without a second thought, risking everything for his sense of duty.

Lori turned her hand over and rubbed her palm against Shane’s, her fingers tracing the veins in his wrist. “Can we make it a given? First sign something isn’t right here and we can leave, just like that?” She met his eyes, soft and genuine, with no lingering stare. “You’re a good leader, but promise me Shane, you won’t risk everything for a lost cause. We need to come first, the three of us.”

“More mouths to feed too. Which means more trips into the city and further out to scavenge.” Right over left, left over right, and tug, then apart it went, a reef knot unwinding as easily as it had come together. Easy, and the first one he’d show Carl, once they sat down for a lesson.
Shane looked up at her again finally, idly flicking one end of rope between his fingers Still fidgeting, still restless.. She made excellent points, perfectly reasonable ones. But he just couldn’t see past the risk yet. “I know. But I don’t wanna make it any easier for them. I think we’re good here, with what we got, for right now. No use stickin’ our necks out.”

It was hard to fight with someone who could back his position with reason. Lori glanced to where others in their group were gathered around Dale’s camper, getting ready for lunch. It was easy to imagine how much more crowded and difficult it could be if even two families joined their number.

She turned back to Shane and took a couple of steps closer, crouching down so only he could hear her, her fingers playing with the loose end of rope in his hand. “So why then are we staying? Wouldn’t we be better off, just the three of us? More guns, less mouths to feed? How do you see this playing out?”

Let It Be [Daryl & Lori]

Daryl caught the slight change in her voice as she suggested resting for a bit. He met her eyes and nodded. “Sure. That sounds good.” He didn’t let himself forget that she was pregnant and that he couldn’t run her as hard as he could some of the other group. Not that she’d ever admit that she may need it more than the others. He didn’t want to put her in that position in the first place.
He glanced around the room once again and nudged the desk chair in her direction. “Looks comfortable enough. Go on and rest your feet.” He grabbed a couple bottles of water and handed her one. He sat in the floor and leaned up against a bare space against the wall, resting his crossbow against the side of the desk within his reach.
“Everything okay?”

Lori took the offered water and eased back into the chair, carefully testing it before placing her feet up on the desk and leaning back into it. It felt good, a little normal even, despite their situation.

“Perfect,” she smiled, taking a couple of packs of crackers from the box and tossing him one. “Be careful or I’m going to get used to this princess treatment, and then you’ll be in real trouble.” She smiled brighter at him as she opened her pack of crackers and took the first bite. Just liked she’d remembered. At least some things didn’t change.

Never Be Alone [Shane & Lori]

Shane nodded. The voice in the back of his head was screaming at him that everything had gone to hell and that maybe the city would have been a better way to go about it. “Fort Benning.” He glanced in the rearview mirror, knowing that had been his first thought when they’d decided to leave King County. “That’s where we should’ve gone.”
“Shit!” He slammed on his brakes and pulled up the parking brake just as someone slammed into the side of his jeep. He slid out of the jeep to help the man, almost realizing too late that he was one of the dead ones that had been gunned down in the street by the military in the hospital.
He pulled his glock from his holster and put a bullet under its chin and out the top of his head. “Shit,” he muttered as he pulled the body from his jeep and onto the side of the road out of the line of traffic. “Talk to me, Lori. Tell me what you’re thinkin’.” He knew that he could force his hand if he absolutely had to, but it’d be better if he had her blessing from the beginning.

Before she could object to the idea of Fort Benning, the Jeep lurched to a sudden stop, and the belt bit painfully into her shoulder. Immediately she turned back to make sure Carl was okay and hadn’t unbuckled as he was fond of doing in the back seat. His eyes were wide, and she placed a comforting hand on his knee as she turned her attention to follow Carl’s line of sight to see Shane pull his gun.

“Baby...look at me, only at me.” She struggled to unfasten her seat belt and shift to avert Carl’s gaze. “Shane’s going to make sure we’re safe, and nothing is going happen here, okay?” She nodded, at her son, trying to believe right along with him that the words she spoke were true.

When Shane returned to the Jeep, she turned her attention to him. Her voice even and devoid of the emotions she was feeling inside. “We need to get off this road. There are too many people. Too many....” she struggled to find the right word. “Too many...obstacles. I think if we can get of this road and make camp for a night or two, the road will clear up and we can decide which way we go.”

Lori frowned when he broke eye contact with her. It was much easier to feel like she was winning the argument when she could gauge his reaction. “But wouldn’t our strength be in numbers? There’d be more people to take shifts, more eyes keeping watch, more hands helping out. I feel like we’re surviving day to day just waiting for everything to get worse.”

She crossed her arms at her chest. “People like that are going to find us, signs or not. It isn’t like we’re taking measures to hide ourselves.”

Never Be Alone [Shane & Lori]

Shane understood all that Lori was saying. Their fears were one and the same. He glanced over at her as he kept the jeep on the road. He tapped his breaks and down shifted once again. The traffic was becoming more congested and started to slow down. He didn’t like it. Not one bit.
“Right. I get that, but if this traffic stops altogether, Lori, we’re screwed.” And in more ways than one. He sighed as he maneuvered the jeep through a jumble of cars. They’d passed a car or two that had obvious problems. The officer in him wanted to pull over and offer assistance, but he had to get Lori and Carl to safety.
That was his job now. His only job.

Safety in numbers. She believed in that to a point, and she trust Shane because he’d been a part of their lives for so long, but maybe someone out there knew what was going on, more information than they had.

As they passed a car with its hood up, she locked eyes with a mother standing outside of it, her two children plastered to her sides, she could see that fear in her eyes. “Someone has to know something, everyone headed in the same direction. What if it isn’t safe? This doesn’t feel right.”

Let It Be [Daryl & Lori]

Daryl chuckled softly. “Beggars can’t really be choosers, ya know?” he teased softly. Her body pressed into his caused feelings that he wanted to keep buried to stir. She was warm and soft, and he ached to just hold her in his arms for a bit now that they had some semblance of a safe place to rest. This was a feeling that he was completely confused by. He swallowed hard and took a step around the desk to investigate further. “But I bet there’s something in here somewhere.”
He narrowed his eyes a bit and smirked. “Well, ain’t that somethin’.” He picked up a half-empty box of crackers packets. “I hope you like stale cheese crackers and peanut butter because looks like that’s what’s for dinner.” He passed the box back to her, wanting her to go ahead and eat if she was hungry enough.
He rummaged around in the drawers on the desk and found a bottle of whiskey, a pack of gum, and almost empty can of honey roasted peanuts. He rattled the can and pushed it toward her. “Whoever the hell worked in here sure did like his peanuts and peanut butter.”

“Oh, wow,” she took the box from Daryl with small smile of wonder on her face. “This reminds me of being a kid, summer vacations. These were a staple on car trips. My dad would stop at these gas stations in the middle of nowhere, and the crackers they had were probably staler than these.”

Lori clutched the box to her and looked around for a comfortable spot. “Maybe we can sit for a bit before we check out those units.” The events of the last 24 hours were starting to come crashing down on her now that they were somewhere quiet and safe.

Let It Be [Daryl & Lori]

Daryl felt the warmth of her hand on his arm as she spoke softly beside him. He knew he didn’t have to coddle her. She was one of the most capable women that he’d ever met. He admired that in her. She went to toe to toe with Rick and Shane and didn’t back down. She had gumption and guts. That’s exactly what they’d need if they were going to survive. He glanced at her and nodded. “You’re probably right, but we can’t go in there thinkin’ that’s how it is. We’ll get our asses kicked for sure then.”
He pointed up ahead and motioned that he’d go first and that she was to stay right on his ass. “You get in any kind of trouble, you holler, ‘kay?” He motioned his head for her to come on as he crouched down, crossbow loaded and ready to go in case they should need it. His knife was easily accessible.
He paused for a moment to listen for any kind of sudden sound, hearing none they hurried toward the door to the office. They’d never been a group that had a lot of luck so when he reached for the handle and it turned easily in his hand, he let out a sigh of relief. They wouldn’t need to break-in, and that meant it would be one less thing that would draw attention to them.
Once he opened the door, he hissed, “Come on in and shut the door.” They’d gotten doubly lucky when the room was one medium-sized room with no other way in or out. He pointed toward the corner of the room. There were several cases of bottled water stacked up near a mini-fridge. “Well, will you look at that.”

Lori stayed close behind Daryl although she was more than capable of taking care of herself. But she knew to stay far enough away so that he could maneuver, especially with his cross bow. She relaxed a bit once they were in the office, it didn’t smell like rotting flesh which was always a good sign, just stale with time.

She glanced over his shoulder after closing the door. “Lucky us, looks like we’ve hit the jackpot. Don’t suppose there is a case of food hiding under there.” She asked as she steadied herself against his shoulder.
