The United States is not a monarchy, you are not expected to show reverent respect to the POTUS, they are not some inhuman-godlike being. How to call your reps when you have social anxiety

When you struggle with your mental health on a daily basis, it can be hard to take action on the things that matter most to you. The mental barriers anxiety creates often appear insurmountable. But sometimes, when you really need to, you can break those barriers down. This week, with encouragement from some great people on the internet, I pushed against my anxiety and made some calls to members of our government. At O’Hare there was a lawyer who was about five minutes away from giving birth sitting there in her sweatpants with a sign that said “I’m a lawyer and I speak Hindi/Urdu”. Just her and her sign and supersized tea from McDonalds.

While we’re still trying to make sense of it all, we can’t help but appreciate the passion that’s gone into so many of these messages. When little kids are getting in on it, you know people are mobilizing. (One dog’s protest sign was especially good.)

Hey New Yorkers

Reps Nadler (NY 10th) and Velasquez (NY 7th) have been at JFK most of today trying to help people stranded by the Muslim ban.  I’m sure they’d love to hear from supportive constitutes today.  All House and Senate offices keep track of the responses they get from their constitutes (aka the people who have the ability to vote for this politician).  

Nadler represents the West Side of Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn.  Velasquez represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens.  Follow the links see what neighborhoods each represents and how to contact by phone/email.

ETA: You know who wasn’t at JFK today?  Rep. Meeks whose district includes JFK airport.  His Twitter says he is anti-Muslim ban, but if you live in Jamaica, St. Albans, Elmont, the Rockaways, or the western part of Valley Stream, you might want to encourage Rep.
