When Sherry Johnson was eleven, she found one day that she’s gonna marry a 20-year-old member of her church who had raped her. She became pregnant and in order to avoid investigation and criminal case, her family and church officials decided to make the girl a legal wife of this monster.

“My mom asked me if I wanted to get married, and I said, ‘I don’t know, what is marriage, how do I act like a wife?’” Johnson remembers today, many years later. “She said, ‘Well, I guess you’re just going to get married.’” 

However, her case is one of thousand cases of child marriage. According to statistics, children 16 and under are still being married in Florida at a rate of one every few days.

Johnson and her family also attended a conservative Pentecostal church and that other girls of a similar age periodically also married. One girl said when she was 10 she was raped by both a minister and a parishioner and later gave birth to a daughter. There were all documents confirming her and her child’s age, but still, the judge approved the marriage to end the rape investigation, telling her, “What we want is for you to get married.”

And nevertheless, America prefers to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, like in Syria, calling it “defending freedom” rather than to change states’ laws and to protect American children from rape, coercion and molestation. 

Today, Johnson is campaigning for a state law to stop underage marriage that has already become a norm in some states.

Please, help me to raise awareness to this issue. No one can remain indifferent to the problem of child molestation.

Thought: I do NOT think that 50% of the world’s billionaires should be women. I think there shouldn’t be any billionaires at all.

So you are saying 0% of the world should be billionaires?

Yes.

Why shouldn’t their be billionaires? That makes no sense.

Because the existence of billionaires is predicated on the exploitation of human labor and unsustainable environmental harm.  That level of wealth hoarding is harmful to economies, as it reduces the amount of money in circulation. No one person, no family, could ever conceivably even SPEND a billion dollars anyway, and  it is inherently immoral to accumulate wealth so narrowly while so much of the world lives in abject poverty.  

Better then to create a wealth ceiling, a point at which all wealth over a certain point  is taxed at or very near 100% to incentivize people to actually spend their money rather than hoard it, stimulating the economy and bettering the lives of far more people. Better even still to create and regulate economic systems that protect workers and the environment in a way that such extreme levels of wealth accumulation aren’t even feasible. 

The problem with this is that it reduces the incentive to actually do fiscally well. What’s the point of starting a business if you can’t become wealthy?

There is a very real difference between “reasonably wealthy” and A BILLIONAIRE

No one is saying you shouldn’t have a nice house, we are saying that having multiple really, really ridiculously nice houses while your employees are either homeless or at serious risk of becoming homeless is immoral.

I’ll never understand why this concept is hard for people. I think it’s because they can’t actually fathom how much $1 Billion is.

Seriously.

Let’s say you have a badass job. A great job. You make $100 AN HOUR. You work 10 hours a day ($1000 A DAY), 5 days a week ($5000 a week!!!), every week ($20,000 A MONTH), thats $240,000 Every Year.

It would take you 4,167 years to make a billion dollars.

Keep in mind then, that if you got paid $1000 an hour, 10 hours a day, five days a week, every week, all year, it would still take over 400 years to make a billion.

You want to make one billion in a human lifetime? If you made $10,000 an HOUR, 10 hours a day, 5 days a week, every week, all year, it would take you 41 years to hit a billion.

(And that’s not counting, ya know, money you spend to stay alive on food or rent or anything. )

Jeff Bezos currently has 140 billion dollars.

There is a reason if most billionaires are from the USA: the workers there have shit deals. In the USA unions seem utterly discouraged, the work conditions would be unacceptable for Western Europe, and you the shift hours:pay ratio is ridiculous for minimum wage.

Some of the things that circulated on the Amazon work conditions during the strike were enough to make me decide to NEVER buy from amazon ever again. They were not comprehensible or acceptable in any form.

I am not against billionaires who earn like that doing something that doesn’t end up exploiting workers (if an artist or architect is a billionaire, you writing magic books, making glass houses or producing glittery skulls doesn’t needs workers to suffer for it); but if a factory/brand head is a billionaire odds are they are also cutting around in stuff and not being extremely ethical when it comes to their workers.

OP is not saying “it doesn’t matter if you put a bunch of hard work and effort and intelligence in this, if you heard more than this you should be punished and taken away the fruit of your work”, they are saying “in a flawed and capitalistic society we live in, the legit possibility that someone earns that much without disrespecting and exploiting his workers is slim and close to zero, and I don’t think such a behavior from a boss should be acceptable”.

And it IS a sign of the fact that our society is fucked when homelessness, neo-poverty and racism based on the prejudice that immigrants will “take your work” are all on the rise and yet some people have 112 billions.

If Bezos paid his workers decently with a fulfilling wage, hired enough people to make the hour shifts human, cooperated with unions decently do you think he would have 112 billions? 

No, he wouldn’t. He would have to pay MORE people and pay each of them MORE and for how american system is probably grant them other benefits which is not free for a company…. that takes money, money he doesn’t want to put there. He doesn’t value his workers enough to give them decent living and working conditions and that’s WHY he is that rich.

Not why he is rich, that is the idea behind amazon. But that rich… you’re not that rich and ethically responsible.

Plus OP didn’t say “let’s go to their houses with torches and let’s make a october revolution remix”, they said “create and regulate economic systems that protect workers and the environment” .

If all billionaires were like that with their workers being perfectly healthy and rich too or anyway without problems and we didn’t have homelessness, sure, that would be great. But in our society? In this reality? Billionaires are like that because they apply the shittiest possible work conditions they can to save up money.
