people always say 21st century breakdown was just a poor repeat of american idiot but it still contains raw as fuck lines like "the freedom to obey is the song that strangles me" and "revolt against the honour to obey" and "your slogan is a gun for hire" and "don't lose your faith to your lost naivety" and "the brutality of reality is the freedom that keeps me from dreaming" and the entirety of east jesus nowhere and the concept of peacemaker as a satire on the american military, "what will divide us? the righteous and the meek" and "there is no place like home when you've got no place to go" and "slogans on the brink of corruption" and various advertising quips used throughout the static age saying "this is how the west was won" and the deceptive lyrical simplicity of 21 guns "when your mind breaks the spirit of your soul" and "your faith walks on broken glass", literally all of mass hysteria/modern world but "mass confusion is all the new rage and it's creating a feeding ground for the bottom leaders of hysteria" and "the punchline is a natural disaster and it's sung by the unemployed" and the whole album ending with a song about wanting, through all the noise and hysteria, to see the good in the world without losing sight of what is worth fighting for without losing yourself entirely. anyway 21st century breakdown was an absolute masterpiece thanks for listening.
