Why this is the worst thing that could have happened to Doctor Who

So, this being Tumblr and all, I guess you’ve probably already got the fireworks ready. The Doctor is a woman. Awesome, right? Maybe. I shall start this post by saying that I refuse to make any comment what so ever on this new Doctor before I actually get to see her on the job. I will certainly give her a chance, but like those before her, she (and especially the new writers) will have to win me over and I won’t immediately adore her based merely on the fact that she is a woman, as to me that would be the very definition of sexism.

Having said that, I should get to the point and especially why I think this is the worst decision that could  have been made at the moment. See, I never really got into Capaldi’s Doctor. Not because he was bad, mind you, I thought he was a brilliant actor from the get go. (and clearly very passionate about the show). But I feel like he was let down by the show and the writing, which led to a very underwhelming portrayal of the Doctor. A very incohesive and at times straight up unlikable version of himself. The show often relied on gimmicks and silly plot twist to make itself look better than it actually was. Some stories didn’t quite live up to their full potential, others were just bad. The plot was overly complex most of the time, resulting in numerous plot holes and a clear lack of continuity. The companions didn’t help either. Clara’s character went downhill after Eleven left and Bill could have been so much better than she ended up being. She always came off as a plot device rather than an actual character. And often her sexuality ended up being the thing that made her stand out the most, which is in my opinion very unfortunate. Then there’s Missy. She was good, I must admit that. However, she was neglected for most of the series and sold off as a cardboard mean girl instead of the awesome character she would become towards the second half of series 10.

All of these things led to a drop in the ratings and popularity over the recent years. Doctor Who is currently in a rather delicate position. See, it is nowhere near as popular as it once was, and that means it’s bringing in a lot less money as well. If there isn’t a turning point sometime soon and things keep going this way soon enough the revenue won’t be enough to justify the cost of production and we all know what happens then. So this brings us to why I think the timing of this decision is just awful. I honestly do believe the choice to cast a woman as The Doctor wasn’t as much about progress and equality as it was a marketing move, aimed at the left-wing, social progressive crowd. And in the end, the truth is that’s just not your average Doctor Who Saturday evening fan. And whether we like it or not, a whole lot of people will stop watching, and there’s a good chance the already failing ratings will drop even further, thus putting Doctor Who at risk of being cancelled once again. We’ll just have to wait and see if this is the so needed turning point or the end of the road for the series.

So, I’m officially out of the teenage years...

And decided to stop by just because I’ve spent every single one of my birthdays on Tumblr since I turned 16 and it’s basically a tradition by now. So yeah. Party time i guess
