projecting my fake moon
I saw you on a beach, you looked so beautiful to me; bright against the dark seaweed. You reminded me of the moon; a grounded moon.
My own personal moon glowing from a calculated darkness.
Today I went to the art store and I saw this Black stripped cardboard that reminded me of many aspects of the drawings I had did previously for this project. I began to try and re-create some of the shapes that I had captured through out my initial research on Skye by folding and bending the cardboard, this also created various interesting aspects of light and shadows that I decided to emphasize by lightening and darkening the pictures I took.
Drawing with lines - trying to capture the movement of the eyes as they travel through the complex shapes and points of the hills - Trip to Skye.
"And turn that over-light off! Turn that off! I won’t be looked at in this merciless glare!"

“I don't want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic! I try to give that to people. I misrepresent things to them. I don't tell the truth, I tell what ought to be the truth. And if that's sinful, then let me be damned for it!”

The manipulation of existing film: taking sections of film/scenes from the 1951 A Streetcar Named Desire and obscuring them further to reflect aspects of Blanche's character and her declining relationship with her sister Stella.
Photo manipulation: Identity and Characterisation: Stills taken from the 1951 film A Streetcar Named Desire. The idea I had here was to work with some collage and photo manipulation techniques, these are the ones that I felt worked best in relation to the idea of identity.
Identity and Characterisation.
For my 2nd year graded unit I wish to explore the theme of identity and characterisation through the use of film and installation. Identity is a popular topic that has been explored throughout the history of art, writing, film, and philosophy, because of this I feel that there is so much research ground to explore, different strands and aspects that I can respond to and develop from.
I wish to explore this theme as I am interested in the idea of how we in society like to express ourselves and how that expression is received and viewed by others (the relationship between the character and the audience). I am particularly interested in how identity is explored in film and writing; the way the writer/director portrays certain aspects of the characters ‘identity’ through the way they dress, speak, live, even by the environment they live in and who they socialise with – for example in Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, the pride of the character Miss Jean Brodie is reflected in her clothing, way of speech and even in her ethics which she then promotes to the children she teaches. I also find it interesting how special effects play a role in characterisation; used to express a characters thoughts and feeling - a good example of this is Tennessee Williams’ ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ where music and lighting is crucially used to project the character Blanche Dubois’s feelings and mental state to the audience (dramatic irony). This aspect will be used as a starting point for my research.
Recreation and deconstruction: plaster casts of a previous sculpture piece.
Working with line and movement: A drawing inspired by the shapes from my previous sculpture work during this project.
Further experimentation: Image of my previous Jellyfish sculpture projected onto my hand.
