“i can’t do simple hygiene bc im depressed” that’s easy babe! just do simple hygiene

Y’all always have to wallow in your misery instead of considering maybe, just maybe, the encouragement people like this give is just telling people to do one, easy thing instead of worrying about a whole routine. Can’t make yourself shower? That’s fine, just brush your teeth. Don’t have the energy to do your hair? Okay, just brush your teeth.

Making 1 small change that can start improving your mood leads to other small changes. When I couldn’t make myself shower I would make sure I changed underwear every day. And then I started using baby wipes to keep myself fresh. And then I worked my way back to trying to take showers every day. My record might not be perfect but I’m getting better.

It’s really unhealthy to keep the mindset that anyone who isn’t miserable and suffering under their mental illness or emotional problems doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Maybe they’ve just grown to learn how to love and care for themselves in spite of what they’re going through.

I don’t know what any of you people think professional help looks like, but when you walk in and say “i’m too depressed to do anything” they don’t just nod and say “well you’re broken forever i guess”. they don’t say “here take this pill and it’ll fix everything”. they work with you one step at a time and explain to you that you CAN in fact do simple things even though you’re depressed. it isn’t easy, but it’s not impossible, it just happens in small steps, but it isn’t getting any easier when you react to every instance of someone trying to help by refusing to listen.

The advice he gives is seriously so solid. A lot of times it’s hard to motivate yourself to do something because it seems too daunting to commit to a full routine, so doing one simple thing can help you get motivated for the next simple thing and so on and so forth. Other posters are right, therapists, at least the ones worth anything, don’t just throw pills at you and tell you you’re never going to improve oh well, they give you simple manageable tips to improve your situation.

Recovery is about baby steps at a gentle pace, not using it as a crutch to never ever try to make your situation better. No one said recovery is easy, but it does take at least a smidgeon of willpower/effort on your part. You have to want it enough to be willing to try. I’m not saying you have to Just Do It and fix your life overnight but if you aren’t willing to try then no one can help you.

PRAISE THE LORD

The brush your teeth thing is also really good advice because it’s really important to maintain dental hygiene to avoid ruining your teeth/mouth and needing a lot of dental help to heal from that.

If you can’t do anything else, just brush your teeth. This is the best thing you can do to help yourself long term.

People who give simple advice like this tend to have been there. No, the small bits of advice or action don’t cure the depression/anxiety magically. But it helps. And it helps. And a lot of the time it’s the first thing folks think of when giving advice to people who are where they’ve been. The advice I tend to give is drink water and go easy on yourself, because nothing feels worse than being hard on yourself while dehydrated.

the actual disease is called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, aka Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. Here is a link to the article: https://www.cosmopolitan.com/lifestyle/a12779054/what-is-chronic-fatigue-syndrome/

CFS is a poorly understood disease that doctors don’t take very seriously; often they tell you that it’s all in your head or that you have depression. It is more prominent in DFAB people but we don’t know why.

The diagnosis process is one of ruling everything else out so it’s really hard, time intensive and costly to get a formal diagnosis.

Other co-morbid things that often pop up with CFS: fibromyalgia, IBS, and migraines.

I totally understand that this tweet is just a joke and that it’s Not That Deep but it does downplay the fight hundreds of thousands of people wage every day to get their doctors to listen to them, take them seriously, and actively do research. The woman featured in the screencap, Jen Brea, made a documentary called Unrest about her experience with CFS, and is one of the leaders of the movement to make medical professionals take us seriously & to raise awareness. Unrest is currently on Netflix, if you’re interested in watching it.

Disability & chronic illness activism doesn’t get a lot of recognition or support from able bodied people so it would be cool if everyone could pitch in and at least signal boost articles like this or educate themselves and their friends and families instead of making jokes like this. Thanks 👋🏻

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can be a bitch and we just brush it off because “it’s normal to be tired” but it’s not! It’s really not!

if you’re distressed about what’s going on in alabama, and you are not a resident of alabama or a neighboring state, might i suggest NOT publishing a single hot take on the issue and instead give some money to yellowhammer fund

if pornhub buys tumblr while the deals pending ill take all my art off this godforsaken site and yall should too bc their company has a policy that legally owns whatever work you upload to it

WOW i didn’t expect my personal post as a heads up if i start removing my art in the future to blow up  but YEAH thank u! mindgeek is super fucking shady and notorious for stealing and exploiting content and dmcas are a nightmare that end up doxxing everyone that tries to take down their content and it’s overall definitely not a company i’d like my (entirely sfw!) art to be associated with, let alone possibly have the rights to. i’ve had a lot of art theft already, and i don’t need it to be more difficult.

obviously a deal hasn’t been made yet, but the company is very openly wanting to buy tumblr and if that happens i’m removing all my art from this website, and depending on any changes they make i’ll likely just leave the site completely. i for one was enjoying the nsfw ban and less bots…….

after the nsfw ban awhile back pornhub was encouraging artists to post their digital art to their site because it was ~welcomed~ and everyone then found out their tos/agreement is a nightmare and they basically own everything on their sites owned by mindgeek and could do what they wanted with your art/potentially profit off of it. also, again, i do not want my art associated with a porn company. at all.
