- kira nerys is quite possibly the best example of character development in the trek universe. her justifiable but blind hatred for the cardassians, the race who enslaved her world and people for fifty years, initially made her a combative first officer for deep space 9. kira proved to be smart, capable and loyal, but more than that, her gradual realization that not all cardassians supported the cruelty her people had suffered was what made her the exact right second-in-command (and eventual commander) of deep space 9. beyond these developments, kira is a fully rounded individual with a rich social life and a deep spiritual side. although she’s a self-professed stick in the mud at first, her friendship with jadzia dax eventually reveals her more playful side. kira is a woman who endured a brutal and merciless childhood and a dangerous adolescence as a rebel on bajor, but grew up into a compassionate, dedicated, loving person who is willing to listen to both sides of a story instead of trusting prejudices.
